the lab’s speakers blare the most obnoxious song that newt can play while hermann stands there at his chalkboard. rick astley. gets him every time. and after a few more beats, with newt staring pointedly at him and taking one of his scalpels and using it as a microphone, the mathematician storms out. which leaves newt to his own peace.
but then a visitor. the scalpel falls into the silver tray below him, and he’s piping up from his corner of the room, “yeah, yeah, YEAH. it’s me. but, hey, chillllax on the whole doctor, alright? i may have got a phd— well, a few, actually— but i just prefer newt.”
a beat. he takes his gloves, grabs them by the insides and flips each one out gingerly. kaiju blue, nasty stuff.
“well, it’s nice to meetcha! and you’re j-tech. cool. as for picking my brain, have any tools? ha, okay, kidding. so, what did you wanna know?”
“alright. newt.” she nods once and comes further into the room, feeling much of the tension leave her as she identifies the song playing through the speakers. it's oddly comforting. “call me ro, i guess. most people do.” ro takes a moment to look at the varying jars and containers full of kaiju bits and tries not to seem grossed out. metal is more her style - all of this biological stuff tends to freak her out.
“i want to know everything.” the words tumble out before she can stop herself, and she clears her throat as her face flushes. “i mean - i’ve just never seen anyone build their own system before, and everyone’s always said it can’t be done, but - you did it.” ro’s eyes are bright with excitement. “it’s like meeting a rockstar.”
“hey, are you dr. geiszler?” rowan asks, hesitation in her voice as she walks into the lab. by all technical accounts, she’s not supposed to be here. but she’s curious, and one of the pilots she’d been suiting up had told her about newt’s work. “my name’s rowan, i work with the jaegers - someone told me i could find you here.” she confesses, before blurting out the real reason she’s come in. “i just heard that you built your own pons system and i was kind of hoping i could pick your brain about it.”

“thank you.” whether he’s serious or not, joey doesn’t know. “yeah, better than me. she deserves more than i’ll ever be for her.” he can make jess happy, sure, but he can also make her incredibly sad or angry with only a couple of words. it’s stupid and destructive, he knows, but he can’t stop that spiral when it starts. “but she doesn’t have to love me. you have to love your kids — they’re yours. i’m… i’m not hers. not in the same way.”
“yeah, and isn’t that all the more reason you should believe it’s real?” he raises an eyebrow. “she doesn’t have to love you, but she does anyway. that’s as honest as it gets.” memphis sighs and shakes his head, a small smile tilting at his lips. “you know, she never wanted kids. and then one day, she shows up here and tells me about this gangly teenage boy that she’s adopting, and she talks about you like you’ve been her kid her entire life.” he looks up at joey and reaches out to nudge his shoulder. “you’re everything to jess. always will be.”

“connor! oh, no!” she crashes to her knees beside him and carefully lifts his head up. “ah, shit - okay, okay, i can fix this. i can fix you.”
Pretty flower is offered ; a wild one that's bright and fragrant. "Here. Everybody likes flowers." He grins, holding it out a bit further for her. "You look very nice today. Did ya' do somethin' different with your hair?"

“oh- thank you!” a smile spreads across her face as she takes the flower, a giddy wave of excitement bubbling up within her. “no one’s ever given me flowers before.” at his compliment, ro ducks her head with a sheepish giggle. “thanks. no, nothing different, it’s just kinda - tame, i guess.”
❛ i’m okay… ❜ it’s a shaky whisper, trembling hands hovering above his bruising neck, each mark too clear against his pale skin. he wishes he brought a scarf. wishes the collar of his jacket was bigger so he could hide the (injuries) damage so he wouldn’t have to deal with the stares of his friends and strangers. wishes he could push down the fear the plagued his system. wishes he could focus long enough to get his LED on his temple to stop blinking red. he is okay, he is. he’s alive and mostly unharmed. his attacker taken care off and unconscious on the ground next to his feet. the damage doesn’t even hurt. so why can’t he stop trembling? nothing happened. he’s okay. trembling hands drop to his sides, hands in tight fists. ❛ i’m okay. i promise. ❜
“whoa, whoa - hey. sit down, okay? let me take a look.” her voice is quiet and soothing, and she speaks slowly so as not to startle him. “it’s okay, connor.” rowan notes the red flashing at his temple. her heart goes out to him. she moves to pull out a chair for him to sit down. “just take a sec to get your head straight. i’m not gonna judge you.” the marks around his neck are dark, and for a fleeting moment rowan thinks they look painful, but she pushes that thought aside. androids weren’t built to feel pain like humans.
“hey! were you sent down by upstairs?” rowan asks as she wipes down the chair and table she uses as a makeshift ‘operating’ room. “you look a little banged up. nothin’ i can’t fix!” she’s remarkably cheery, considering her profession. “have a seat. i’m rowan.”
