“Vi says she likes the purple ones.” Micah smiled as he approached Daichi. It had been a while since he’d seen his friend, and he was excited to see him. Vi was beside Micah with a potted sunflower, smiling brightly.

It took Daichi a moment to register that the voice was responding to his inquiry and yet another moment to realize whom that voice belonged to, but as soon as he did, he let out an excited sound and dove for a hug, arms wrapping around Micah and giving him a squeeze before turning his attention to Vi. “You have good taste, Vi!” He reached over and gave her an affectionate pat on the head and then asked thoughtfully, “Did you grow? Is it been that long?”

He gently tapped his fingers on the table. They didn’t want to seem to stop moving. Time was going way too quickly but way too slowly at the same time.
“Oh, hi-” he said shyly. “It’s nothing. It’s not a big deal. It’s stupid really. Just a contest I entered- I bet I didn’t even place and they’re letting me down nicely and sending all the sketches and junk back. They’re really considerate-” he babbled, though there was an edge of grumpiness to it.
“Well - I- umm-” Linus breathed out. “I mean yeah but like if it’s bad- just- you know- just let me down gently. Tell me they were nice to me. I don’t think I could take it if they called me stupid-” he said, gulping.
Of course, the letter was a very nice one from the company telling him he’d moved on to the finals and explaining more about what the next steps of the process were. But Linus didn’t know any of that. He was just prepared to have rotten luck. Which usually wouldn’t hurt but to fail at this would hurt pretty badly.
image
Daichi paused in his motions of fumbling with the packet and gazed over it at Linus. He raised a brow and turned the envelope over to where the opening was but didn’t proceed just yet -- not before saying something.

“Okay--I promise they can’t call you stupid,” he reasoned, since no reputable contest would ever do that. “What kind of contest was it?” he asked then as he proceeded to carefully open up the seal by finding a flap at the edge and then running his pinky along it with care not to rip the envelope as he opened it.

Once the flap was open, he waited a moment longer to actually take the contents out, just in case Linus decided he wanted to do it himself after all. Then, “Okay, I will take it out. Ready?” His fingers were already touching the contents inside the envelope, and after a moment he gingerly slipped them out, the letter being at the front of the pile, which he looked at first, but before he could start reading, he mentioned, “Okay, but I read slow in English, so sorry I make you wait.”

Not that it would take more than the first few lines to grasp the contents, but he wasn’t lying about his struggles with reading in English, not having gotten as much experience with reading as he had with speaking. It actually took a minute and a tilt of his head, lips trying to mouth the words he was reading as he did so, before he raised his eyes once more and locked them onto Linus’--then he held the contents out horizontally so that Linus could take them from him. His lips curved up in a smile, promising that it was probably good news and safe to look.

Pass-a-dena

“I can’t do it-” Linus said as he put the small package down on the table. He’d been picking it up and putting it down for the last five minutes. He had hot cocoa and a muffin ready to go, with good or ill news, and he just couldn’t bring himself to read the official looking envelope.
It was addressed from the company that owned the Steel, Stone, and Rose subsidiary. It was the contest that he’d been waiting to hear about. Getting into the finals would be a big deal.
He was sure it was just a nice rejection of some kind to let him down easily. He was more than sure there was no way he’d gotten close to winning.

Daichi gazed with dark eyes over his water bottle as he drank, watching curiously as Linus seemed to fumble with the envelope, appearing too nervous to actually open it. He removed the water bottle from his lips with a soft pop sound and wiped at his mouth with the back of his hand before recapping it dutifully.

“Can’t do what?” he asked and reached over to take the envelope off the table before Linus could pick it up again, reading the name on it, which told him absolutely nothing. “You want me to open it?” he offered, fully ready to do just that if given the go-ahead.

Andrew was careful to put his guitar inside the car first before he got in, securing the instrument on the remaining space on the backseat as he gave the driver his address. “Oh yeah that’s much better than any train seat!” He said in agreement as he stretched out his back, sighing as he finally felt the soft cushion cradle his back which seemed to have gone sore from all the crouching he did while working.
“It was good actually. I got to go in earlier than expected because the other act failed to show up on time so really it’s fine if you just saw the end of it,” he started. “Besides, this works out in our favour. I would rather we get the assignment done. How was your day though?”
image
It was true--it was probably a good thing if they were able to work on this earlier, considering how he tended to sleep early and wake up earlier. He wasn’t sure he’d be able to stay awake enough to do much of the assignment if they started too late. “Oh, you know, I’m like a hermit so I just had skating and then I spend all day home with my cat.” He pulled out his phone, unlocking it quickly and then went into his gallery to show Andrew a photo, holding it out for him to see once he got it open. The picture was of Coffee sleeping on his chest, taken earlier that afternoon. It was taken at whatever angle he could manage to get it at from that position. “He just sleeps on me like that, so I just lie there, can’t move,” he said with a soft giggle.
Image

He took his phone back and looked at the picture of his cat for a moment longer fondly before mindlessly scrolling to the side, on autopilot, without even realizing he was doing it. He fumbled, nearly dropping his phone, when he noticed that he still had some mirror selfies in there from earlier that he didn’t particularly want anyone to see. “Oh, um...” he tried to divert the conversation topic as he pressed his phone to his chest, hoping that Andrew hadn’t seen the picture where he was trying to flex his arm--while there was nothing particularly taboo about it (it wasn’t a nude or anything), it still was embarrassing to him. “How long do you take to learn guitar?”

Andrew gave a curt nod and a slight smile at the other as he made his way to the back office, not willing to wait his study buddy wait for longer than he should. It has been a courteous conversation between him and the manager, ending with Andy getting his pay for a job well done. Once he was back at the bar, he gave Daichi a gentle pat on the shoulder so as to alert him with his presence before motioning at the bartender to get him a shot of vodka. “Just for the road,” he explained before downing the liquor. “Should we get going then?”
Once they were out of the bar, he started to walk away from the building just to get somewhere quieter. “Should we just grab a taxi back to my place? I have everything set up anyway.”
image
Daichi watched as Andrew downed the shot of liquor--some people just made it look so cool and Daichi knew that he himself could never. Agreeing, he followed his friend outside under the assumption that they’d take the train until Andrew proposed otherwise, which-- “Yeah, that’s a good idea. Probably faster than take the train.”

One they’d waved down a taxi, Daichi slipped into the back seat and waited for Andy to follow suit, making himself comfortable in the meanwhile. Yep, definitely better than being out in the cold and waiting for the train, he decided as he wiggled a little bit in his seat that seemed to have a warmer. “It’s warm!” he mused, much like an excited and bouncy child. “How was your show? I only saw the very end but you sound good.”

Mark should be completely in over his head with an 9-year-old kid, a 14-month old baby, and two dogs while at the dog park down the street from the Valdez household, but he had it under control. Mostly.
“Ruby, baby, careful with Prescott’s ball!” Mark was saying a little too loudly as he chased his almost-toddler in a circular walker, trying to aim her away from the doggie doo as Prescott, the well-behaved but still only two-years old Chow Chow played with his son who used hand crutches to walk thanks to cerebral palsy. Their second dog, a tiny miniature pinscher named Solo was busy making sure everyone in the dog park got to pet him. When Ruby didn’t answer right away, Mark looked away from baby June for one second to glance at his son and then he was jerking back at the sound of crashing plastic plus the gleeful laughter of his daughter.
“Oh, I am so sorry,” Mark said as he stood up and winced. He then hurried over to where June had bounced her baby walker off someone’s shin. “Are you okay?” Mark asked the person as he reached down to unhook the safety harness from June and pick her up to hold her on his hip. Her soft brown cheeks were glowing and slightly red from her endless laughter as she played. “Just brought the kids and dogs for some fun in the park,” he said a little breathless. “I have so many bruises on my shin from this thing,” Mark said as he toed the walker out of the way. “But she loves it,” he said in his ‘ah, kids’ voice.

The January winter air was crisp but not overbearingly cold. In fact, it felt refreshing as it hit his face, though he did make sure to bundle his two-year-old baby niece up to make sure she wouldn’t catch a cold. Maaya was more energetic lately, though it probably had to do with the fact that he didn’t really let her interact with many strangers during her stay with him. He found it cute that she was still so shy around people she didn’t know but a part of him wished she could be braver--maybe that way he would have to worry about her less.

He let her walk beside him as they took a stroll through the park, her little hand clutched in his own as she skipped energetically in order to keep up with him--though he wasn’t exactly sure who was keeping up with whom right now as she pointed towards the dog park and said in Japanese, “Dogs!”

He replied in kind, “You want to play with the dogs? You’ll have to be careful, watch from a distance, okay? Or your mom will kill me.” Thankfully it seemed she hadn’t inherited his allergies, but he still wanted to be careful--if not for her sake then for his own. He let go of her hand just so he could reach down to ruffle her hair affectionately as they walked over to see all the dogs playing. Maaya practically clung onto his leg as they approached and he knew he would have to pick her up and carry her soon. Too busy keeping an eye on his niece instead of in front of him, he was surprised when something suddenly hit his shin. Maaya retreated behind his legs to hide from the people now in front of them, only one eye peaking out from behind his knees.

“It’s okay!” Daichi claimed after he’d seen the hit had come from a child who looked even younger than Maaya. He gave the baby his sunniest smile, one of his hands still resting on Maaya’s head to make sure he didn’t lose her despite how close she kept to him. “It looks fun!” he said enthusiastically, kneeling down in front of the walker and maneuvering his arm around his niece to being her to his side so he could still keep an eye on her as he took in the contraption. “I’ve never seen that before.” He turned to Maaya and said to her in Japanese, “That looks fun, doesn’t it?” before turning back and looking up at the man whose child had hit him in the shin--he couldn’t complain when he’d had countless of much more serious injuries there. “She can’t speak English, but I think she also likes it.”

Decided that the man probably had no idea what he wanted, Khai went ahead and pick one for him. He reached to grab the bottle of lychee that’s soaked in syrup, picked two out and dropped it into a glass, followed by two strawberries and a few mint leaves. “Tried, eh? What did you use, Tinder?” He asked as he muddled the ingredients before he filled the glass with soda water, let the fragrant of lychee spread into the air as he continued.
image
“The question is, are you looking for a good fuck or good romance? I assumed you already have your eyes on someone.” He continued, added a tablespoons of lychee syrup and served it to the man before him. “Strawberry and Lychee Virgin Mojito, enjoy.”

Daichi grazed his teeth on his bottom lip as he watched the man put lychees into a glass for him. He actually liked lychees a lot and he figured it couldn’t hurt to go a little out of his comfort zone right now. He did try to go on a date, after all. “Mm, no, someone I met at the park, actually. I don’t use the applications,” he said, an accent lacing his words. He was probably one of the only people he knew who had never used a dating app before, and odd as it was, he preferred to keep it that way.

Image

He diverted his eyes, not used to having a total stranger be so direct with him. Really, he normally wouldn’t even answer such personal questions, would prefer to change the topic--he was more interested in the tricks the bartender had been doing with the shaker. Still, he accepted the drink without really understanding the name due to a severe lack of drinking experience combined with some language barrier. He hadn’t seen the man pour any alcohol in it, so he figured he might go for it this one time.

“Thank you,” he said quietly, then thought about the question. “I prefer romance,” he admitted finally, tipping his head to the side just a little as he thought about what it was like to be in that kind of relationship. The downside being, “but I can’t really see it with someone I just met.” It was a lot easier to find the former, which didn’t really help him as it had been over a year since he’d actually hooked up with someone he wasn’t in love with. He took a tentative sip of the drink--it tasted good, sweet.

Kinks?

It was a testament to his ex he even understood what that meant. Still, though...  with an amused glint in his eyes despite not planning to give an actual answer, “You have to find out yourself.”
