last week would have been the 58th birthday of bernard baran, who was imprisoned in 1984 at the age of 19 after a pair of parents failed to get him expelled from his position as a teacher's aide via a complaint about his uncloseted homosexuality and resorted to fabricating claims of pedophilia and sexual abuse. refusing a plea bargain for 5 years that demanded admission of guilt by maintaining his innocence, he received multiple life sentences and ultimately spent 21 years in prison. a scrawny boy of less than 100 pounds whose photo was published in the newspapers, he was beaten and sexually tormented, received threatening letters and a bounty was placed on his head. his conviction came in record time despite a total lack of evidence, countless contradictory and objectively impossible stories, and preschooler child witnesses outright asking for the "prize" they were "promised" after giving their testimony. his immediate appeal was denied, and afterwards his family was too poor to continue paying a lawyer. not a single lgbt organisation chose the side of a gay teenager being subjected to a kangaroo court in the middle of the satanic panic. ultimately, his release took until 2006, a few days after his 41st birthday, when a local advocacy group successfully proved the absurdity of his trial and the deliberate manipulation of evidence. he only got to live another 8 years in freedom, bearing mental and physical damage from years of abuse and negligent medical care. he needed a full set of new teeth to replace the ones that were punched out or broken and extracted. nevertheless, he enjoyed gardening and found work as a landscaper. his record has not been cleared to this day.

This is what pride is for.

Yes the parades are fun. That's not why we fight

There needs to be way, way more of a conversation about how being unable to drive in America means you don’t get to participate in society. That shit is genuinely life ruining. My neuro shit has kept me from driving my whole life and it’s always meant I can’t go do stuff I want to, I can’t get the trade jobs I know I’d be good at, I can’t even see the people I want to. Unless you’re in one of a handful of major cities in the US with decent transit systems, you’re basically expected to drop dead if you can’t drive.

No one I know has had the same experience as me getting on hrt and honestly it’s a damn shame

me, mentally bracing myself for months, if not years of psychological evaluation: “So I think I might be trans?”

doc: “cool cool cool cool”

doc: “so… do you wanna start estrogen today or…?”

This is the blessed post of ungatekeeping. Reblog this to never again have to barter with a medical professional regarding treatment of your mental or physical health.

disabled people deserve more than the bare minimum to live tbh. and i don't mean in the "oh we have extra costs that makes being disabled more expensive" - which is true, but i'm counting those in the budget to live. disabled people also deserve enough money to buy treats, nice clothes, fund their hobbies, take a trip away, and so on. being disabled shouldn't force you into a life of frugality and poverty

I wish grown adults would realize that having beef with a child is embarrassing and makes them look like a complete weirdo. The multiple forums dedicated to stepmoms bashing their stepdaughters out of jealousy for their relationships with their husband, calling them shit like “mini wife” and it’s like, you are the complete freak here, not your stepdaughter, not your husband. The teachers talking candidly about how much they hate a certain third grader in their class because they learn a little slower, dude you fucking evil for taking your frustrations out on an 8 year old who is already struggling. Keep your festering grudge towards a kid off the fucking Internet you freaks.

reminder to:

  • straighten your back
  • go pee goddAMN IT STOP HOLDING IT
  • go take your meds if you need to
  • drink some water
  • go get a snack if you havent eaten in a while
  • maybe wander around the house/stretch a little if you’ve been sat at the computer a while (artists especially: sTRETCH THOSE WRISTS)
  • reply to that text/message from earlier you’d forgotten about
  • maybe send a nice lil message to someone having a bad day?

I just would like to thank everyone who ever reblogs this so that it somehow ends up back on my dash because I usually need the reminder (especially the drinking water one)

Of all posts to see with a million notes, I’m glad it’s this one.

the way that "Karen" originally meant primarily white women using ther privilege to abuse people of color and service workers and the internet turned it into a stand-in for "bitch"...... the way that "NLOG" originally meant girls and women who performatively separate themselves from femininity and put down other women out of internalized misogyny but the internet turned it into a stand-in for their lesbophobic or transphobic slur of choice for masculine women.....the way "manic pixie dream girl" was originally a critique of a sexist trope in fiction and the internet turned it into a way to insult real life girls and women for being weird or quirky....never fucking ending

No offense but the internet gives you the most wrong and fucked up idea of helping people because people get mad if you don't care about disasters happening in 72 countries, meanwhile the people in real life that are doing the most good picked one VERY SPECIFIC thing to care about and care about it REALLY HARD

Walks up to a guy working on restoring a native tree species to his downtown "why aren't you posting about grasses in Turkmenistan!"

The internet has taken a whole generation of bright, motivated, passionate young people who care and have big hearts and turned them into paralyzed, shattered wrecks too crushed by the weight of the world's pain to hand a pair of socks to a person in need

i need people to understand that when a person with a chronic illness talks about the fatigue that comes with it, we're not talking about the tiredness that comes from a 10 hour shift at work, we're talking about the inherent exhausting heavy malaise that hangs on your entire body like a weighted blanket from the time you wake up in the morning and doesn't get any lighter as the day goes on.

fatigue doesn't come from exertion. it's just innate- and when it does come from exertion, it's been worse than the innate fatigue that was already there in the first place, and it adds on top of it, not replaces it.

and another thing. the way Miles' mother - emblematic of his family, his people, his story - tells him she's afraid that other people won't love him, won't look out for him, outside of their world. she means their neighborhood in Brooklyn but Miles literally leaves his entire reality and ends hunted by his fellow spiders for refusing to conform to the narrative codified by seemingly countless Peter Parkers, refusing to live the story that has been unquestioningly accepted as The spider-man story. the way Miguel insinuates that Miles stole his role as spider-man, hatefully calls him an anomaly, believes that Miles is the thing that makes the canon not work. it's SUCH a juicy meta narrative about the struggle of legacy characters, ESPECIALLY characters of color succeeding white characters, struggling to be seen as characters in their own right with a story worth of being part of the world. Miles being Spider-Man is only problematic if you, like Miguel, are operating on the assumption that Spider-Man's story should always be Peter Parker's story with a few cosmetic changes.

A person I know decided to push really hard for “no hitting the kids, at all”, and his wife agreed, although she’d been raised with Some Hitting and thought it was normal. And then she discovered that her child wasn’t afraid of her at all, and she could pull a hand back and the child would just giggle because that wasn’t a threat, and she suddenly realized that actually it had fucked her up so deeply that she couldn’t even see it.

Anyway, good job parenting.
