This is Weston.... signing off

(Mood Music: Weston’s theme)

It didn’t take him long to clear out his desk at the Courier. He hardly kept anything there beyond his notes and some cigs. Seeing as how he promised Lat to have his things out by the end of the day, that worked in his favor. The decision hadn’t been a hard one to make; with the Legion activity Weston’s case load shot up and the money being paid for articles wasn’t as needed as it had been before.

Good thing too because it had been a week or two since he sent in his last article. In light of that, he felt bad staying on as part of the staff payroll. Lat had enough on her hands, Risri kept busy, and Sky…. Wes stop in his tracks and glanced over to the Sky’s desk, making one last mental note of how it looked.

An idea came to him and Weston snapped his fingers. Hunting thru his things, he took out his notebook. After flipping through a few pages, Weston found the one he was looking for and ripped it out. He smiled at the page a moment before setting it dead center on her desk where she would be sure to see it. The sketch of Sky sitting at her desk, hat on and reading a book, had been more detailed than most of the others he had drawn. He hoped she liked the memento.

Nothing else needed to be said. Weston dropped his communicator on his former desk and took out a cigarette, lighting it right there in the office; a first, seeing as Lat didn’t care for the smell of smoke. He chuckled and put on his hat as he walked out the door. If Courier ever needed him, they knew where to find him. And maybe, who knows, if his case load ever dropped off again he might be back writing again.

(I had a lot of fun writing the paper with you! If things get less busy maybe I’ll jump back in. See you online! :)  @the-royal-courier  @risrielthron @skystoneseat @latilda-rommel & all the rest!)

A mistake in magic has created Sky's evil doppelganger, Yks Taesenots! She is identical to Sky in all but one way: she wears no hat. Evil indeed. How can Sky prevent her double from destroying Stormwind and ushering in a thousand years of hatless travesty?

Avatar

Sky would start by letting Lat and the news team know. Then she would lock her self up with some books based around the best way to deal with this. I think that in the end though Sky and Hatless Sky may become friendly after meeting up at the same book club…

Two Skys? I like having just one, thank you very much.

But we could have a Coffee and a Tea Imp!

Then learn to summon two imps! I’m happy sharing my apartment with one Sky, a Sarah @avythis , a @selina-delacroix and the occasional @illusionist-korva.

Yks Taesenots would end up joining up with Easton Aftyr to bring about the Hatless Age.

Something normal

She was so done with this all. The fear, the yelling of those calling the end of the world and the death. Sky never saw her self as a coward she could if need be fight. Most of the news team had seen it more then once. The Demons she could call up where able to rip a person in two should she wish it. She just didn’t wish it. The fear of wanting to was what what kept what she could do in check.

Sitting she tried to write something for the paper. The piece she was working on was about not letting fear of the Hord take over. They had been there to help just outside of Ironforge. Sky had seen it, written about it and handed in that report.

That whole thing had been messy and the images of the battle played back in a loop. Have a drink that would help. No get out of the office she had to…..

Looking across the desk space she saw Wes sitting working at something.

“Hey Shiny you wanna take a break? I hear there is suppose to be some decent folks fighting down at the Brawlers tonight. I was thinking of going now get a seat. Wanna come with?”

Wes glanced up from pouring over the sketches in his notebook. The sketches drawn with quick harsh ink lines were missing a lot of details, but enough was there for Wes to picture in his mind what the demons looked like. Enough to write up yet another story of losing lives and clinging to hope. It was becoming routine.

Wes sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, “By the Goddess, I think I actually find myself missing the dreadfully dull cheating spousal cases I used to have brought to me.” He turned to look over to Sky, kicking his feet up on the end of his desk. “A break? Sure. I wouldn’t mind stepping out.” The brawls never held his attention but a change in scenery was more than welcome. A stop in at that pit might also turn up a lead or a case, anything besides more demon drudgery.

“Find myself in a rut for stories right now. Everything is a damn ‘Gilnean Tragedy’ as of late, ‘cept without the folktale moral at the end. How about you cover the admission and I’ll buy the first two rounds of drinks.” Wes smiled his wolfish grin at Sky as he flipped his hat off his desk on to his head in one smooth gesture.

“Alright your on” she was fast to collect a notebook pencil and then check her pockets for coins. Standing she looked down and rubbed at a ink stain on the bottom of her sweater like it would make a difference.

“Ya it’s all we are going to die sorta storys out there for now. Personally I don’t need to be told over and over it’s the end. Tell me once and then get at it.” her smirk crept across her lips, her hat still firmly on her head as if it was part of her body, eye hidden.

Walking across to the door she paused and yelled over to the coffee station “Hey you stay in the office alright I will  be back in a few hour Boss or Big Bear come in you do what ever they need you to do.”  The Coffee Imp poked her head out and chitted something. “No you can’t come you want us both to get killed? Stay put”

Undoing a ward on the door she looked over at him “Alright ready to go?”

“Suits me!” Tugging his hat firmly into place, Weston dropped his feet from the desk and stood up. In one fluid motion, the repeater sitting next to his desk was grabbed, spun once in the air, and then secured to his back harness. The mechanism within the harness whirled as the repeater latched into place.

“Can’t be too careful out there. Though… I will be accompanied by the infamous warlock, Sky Stoneseat. What could possible go wrong?” Wes smiled at Sky as he moved to follow after her.

Sky laughed as she stepped out the door and into the street. Night was just about to start settling in and she walked with a brisk pace.

“Infamous is an excellent word to use, though you should be warned it’s because of my formidable reputation that something could go wrong. But I have the feeling you are hoping for the right sort of wrong. You know your just the sort that would have been hired to chase me down when I was at my peek”

His gait was relaxed as he followed after her, his long strides easily keeping pace with her hurried steps. “Hey now, I’m not Lat. I don’t go looking for trouble. What makes you say that? Do you usually have non-descript men chasing after you?”

Wes grinned again at Sky as they rounded the street corner, minding to side step out of the way of someone walking the other direction. “You would have to have stirred up some trouble to have caught my attention. Is there another reason you keep your eyes obscured by your hat, beyond keeping the men at bay?”

Turning the corner she  out a low chuckle “Yes because you know last week when I took it off for a moment the throngs of men came flocking to the office. Besides you have seen that old photo of me, nothing so stunning under here. Sorry just an old habit from my book thief days. And that is what I meant by someone like you, I had my fair share of investigators after me at one point.”

She looked at him “I wouldn’t say your non-descript, I have seen folks who have to work less at blending in then you”

“Hmph. Must be losing my touch then.” Wes brought a cigarette to his mouth with a smile. His metal lighter seemed to appear in his hand from seemingly nowhere, lighting the end of the cigarette before disappearing just as quickly. A long drag was punctuated with a sudden exhale of smoke, carefully aimed off to the side from the corner of his mouth.

“Why’d you quit? The thieving I mean. Strikes me as a lucrative venture, and I imagine you were quite good at it.” He brought his left hand up, pinning the cigarette between two fingers and dropping the hand back to his side, letting it swing as he kept pace with Sky. Steely eyes glanced down at Sky from beneath the rim of his hat. Even though they were shadowed, Wes’s eyes gave off an almost reflective light of their own that came and went as he walked, the light shifting with each slight change in angle.

“You get tired of the thrill of it Sky? Or did the public library run you out of business?” Wes flashed an amused grin as he brought the cigarette back to his mouth and turned his eyes away from Sky. Another drag was taken, followed by slow exhale to the side.

Tucked between the pages of a weathered tome in the office was a single page, torn from a notebook. Written were, perhaps, the last words Rose Ashton had written. Plans for a date with Weston. Nothing special, it seemed. Dinner along the lakeside, with the idea to give him a gift she'd saved in her trunk in the office. Inside the trunk was a hat. The kind of confident wide brimmed cap a book's detective might wear, with the inner band stitched in, "For Weston. Love, Rose."

Weston smiled as he placed the hat on his head, “Thanks Rose…”

Sky looked over at him from her desk. “Hey shiney…look not good at this but I am sorry you lost someone…Boss let us know. I feel like I should offer to make you food or something but I can’t cook. Can I pour you a drink?”

Easing his repeater next to the side of the desk, Weston turned to face Sky, grinning at her from beneath his hat. “Sure Sky. Could use one right about now. I know everyone has been losing people out there, with the Legion and all. Still…”

Wes rolled his shoulders and approached Sky’s desk, taking a look at what she had in front of her. “What’s got your focused right?”

Sky reached across the desk and grabber her bottle of cheep whisky as well as a second tumbler. Topping up her own drink she poured him a large one the slid it over.

“All this demon stuff, you know I never knew I liked covering that social fluff till this happened? At any rate I am trying to work out a story about Fel users under attack by these demon killers running around. It will get done at some point.”

She looked at him under the brim of her own hat and raised her glass “To your new hat, it’s a good look for you”

He gave a chuckle with a nod as he raised his glass taking a long drink. “Thanks. Rose left it to me.” Smacking his lips at the taste of whisky in his mouth, Weston returned the glass to Sky’s desk.

“Hey. Anything quick to eat around her? The Boss usually has some handouts stashed around this place, right? Seems she’s always getting gifts from admirers. Tough life.” Weston gave a wolfish smile at Sky, looking for her reaction.

A letter would arrive at the office with the seal of the local bishop.

“Dear ‘The Royal Courier’ Management. We regret to inform you that your employee, Priestess Rosaline Marie Ashton, has passed away. She was deceased in our service as a priestess on loan to the Alliance Royal Military during an as-of-now classified operation. Details can be inquired to at the Records Office of Stormwind. We are deeply sorry for your loss. May the Light be with you all.” - Bishop Anthony Balthasar, Church of the Holy Light

Lat scans the letter, her breath escaping her. She didn’t know Rose that well, but she was still on staff…and that meant something. And she was a friend/partner of Weston’s.

She shook her head, did her best to get control of herself, hand-copied the letter, and forwarded it to @weston-pryor‘s office in Ironforge with the note. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t know. -Latilda.”

Wes burned the letter with the end of his cigarette, letting it catch fire before letting it drift out of his hand. The bottle of bourbon Rose had gotten him celebrating their first 10 closed cases together would now be saved for special occasions. He would mourn for her but in his own way. "One more case together Rose, and this one is pro bono." He'd find out what happened to her, one way or another. @latilda-rommel

Cenarion Circle Concerned of Corruption

By Weston Pryor

Sunday August 14, Westfall; As demonic incursions spread across Azeroth, the death toll continues to mount. However, a new concern has been raised by the Cenarion Circle (CC) that the prolonged fighting at each of the sites is beginning to have an effect on the surrounding environment. More than just the destruction of the land and homes in the local area, surviving foliage has begun to take on a charred and sickly appearance that CC druids claim is evidence of Fel corruption.

With nearly all efforts in the regions under assault committed to fighting back the demonic invaders, the collection of soil and plant samples has yet to be given much attention; something the CC states must change immediately if there is to be any hope of keeping the Legion at bay. A Fel corrupted landscape could tip the scales in favor of the invaders, as Azerothian defenders would have to contend with fighting demons over a hostile landscape. The CC points to Felwood as a clear example of the dangers that could arise if the corruption is left unaddressed.

Toxified vegetation that oozes Fel-poisons, noxious gases, and ravenous Fel corrupted wildlife are only a few of the hazards facing travelers in Felwood and are all examples of exactly what the CC fears will begin to manifest around the incursion sites over time. The fact that even after decades after its initial corruption, Felwood still is deeply afflicted presents an even graver concern if such fears are proven justified. With Westfall being the ‘bread basket of the Alliance’, this threat is several fold. Already commoners are struggling to cope with food shortages brought on by the sudden attack of the Legion and its effects on trade. If the croplands in Westfall are indeed falling to corruption, it is expected food shortages will only get worse.

Alliance officials were unavailable for comment at the time of this articles publication as to what was being done to address the possibility of Fel corruption. Speaking with CC’s Ralinea Stormfeather, the druidess stated the CC already had plans to contact fellow druids as well as summon a representative from the Argent Crusade to discuss methods of halting the corruptive influence of Fel energy before it becomes too late.

Better late than never...

The rent was due. The world was coming to an end and yet, the bills still had to be paid. It had been almost impossible for Weston to get his article notes sent in to the Courier to be published, but the damn months’ rent invoice managed to show up right on time. Weston grinned with amusement as he pictured his gnome landlord staying up through the night sending out invoices, “Prestigious bastard.”

Leaving the tram, Wes walked out on to the streets of Stormwind, pausing a moment to survey his surroundings and glance up at the sky. The damned things could show up anywhere and Wes had his fill of demon encounters for the month already. Getting to the Courier office and checking in with the others was foremost on his agenda. That, and picking up more smokes, fixing his comm, refueling is bike, purchasing more ammo....

“Damn it all. I wonder if Lat would throw a fit if I asked for a raise.” Weston chuckled and started walking at a relaxed pace, making his way toward the office.

It Begins

Lat was writing at her desk, skimming the reports when a courier arrives at the office, breathless. Lat waves dismissively at the person. “Come in. What’s the scoop today?”

The courier dropped the paper onto her desk.  “It’s beginning.”

She looked up quickly, all color flushing from her face. “wot.” She grabbed the envelope and ripped it open, skimming the contents with an intense look on her face. She looks up to the courier. “And this has been fully corroborated? ain’t just some dumb locks being obnoxious?”

The courier had a look of death on his face, something off about his composure. “It is fully confirmed. Military officials  already have reports of casualties and vessels spreading across both continents…people are already hearing things…it’s beginning.”

Lat closed her eyes, and let out a quick exhale. “Okay. I need to step outside.” The man nodded, though there was an odd twitch in his eye. Lat didn’t notice it at first.

Her brain was focused on next steps…she had to see it for herself…closest invasion was Westfall, so that was her location to check. She’d have to grab Risri as backup for this one…criminals? She can handle. An invasion? Best bring a friend.

As for the team….She chewed on her lip. It was not gonna be pretty. They would have to reprioritize coverage, focus on what needs people would have. Social events were now gonna be kicked down a notch. And she would have to be extra careful to keep them safe.

But then something peered into the back of her head, and suddenly something whispered in her mind…something unlike anything she had heard in her mind.

Offers of power..of darkness…of joining the Legion. It was soothing, yet overwhelming. For any normal person, it might’ve won them over.

Unfortunately, the other voices in her head didn’t like them being in there, and fought back.

Physically, Lat’s body had tensed uncontrollably. Something within was fighting…struggling for her will. If a person were to walk by the pair, they would see Latilda convulsing slightly, and a man staring into the back of her head..odd, but nothing too worrisome.

Then the whispers decided they didn’t like visitors and evicted them.

Lat’s irises turned black, and her form stopped convulsing, instead shifting into Worgen form…except this form was darker than usual, strands of shadow energy shimmering around her. She turned around, her black eyes staring into the man, who was surprised to find out the reporter had a darker side.

The worgen swept towards the man, grabbing him by his throat and ramming him into the wall. An echo-y growl emanated from its throat, not like Lat’s voice…but inhuman. “She serves the shadows, not your ilk.” The man snickers. “Not that it matters…we’ll get to the rest of her team…you will all bow.”

“Good luck.” With that, she rams a claw into the man’s chest, the shadowy visage piercing through him like he was made of little but paper.

The man coughs up blood, and attempts to say more, but his eyes simply fade and his head flops.

The worgen tosses the body into the canal, cleaning off its claws.

Inside, Lat claws inside, screaming. This had never happened before. Watching the things she had bargained with take over was….horrifying, to say the least. She hated seeing such behemoths use her body to do so much ill. It was almost enough for her to want to tear the creatures out of her.

As she continued to climb out of the pit that the creatures had placed her mind in, she saw it peer in.

You will get your body back. We only wish to -Protect- our investment.” It offered an inhuman claw, a giddy smile across its horrific features.

She scowled at the creature, but grabbed the claw, and as she did, things came back into vision.

As she opened her eyes, she found herself back in control….but her energy was consumed…her spirit…fading.

Her legs felt like lead as she plodded into her office, only to collapse against the wall. Her comm started beeping, the vital sensors noting the change in Latilda’s medical state.

She was fading fast, but the comm beeped out “Calling Risri for medical attention.”

A quiet. “Confirm…..call….”

And all went black.

The office door was open as Sky panicked came in and slammed it shut. Her body was shaking her bag full of books and note pads. Both hands where smeared with ink as well as part of her arm. She had on a heavy coat and the smell of fel hung on her. The only thing “normal” about her was that regardless of what she saw as the world ending she still had at some point gone and picked up two coffees and tea.

Slamming the door and re-warding it she looks around. It had taken a great deal of strength to and mental doors to slam things shut in her mind from the whispers. She was sure she would be alright after all she had fought them for years.

"Boss I really think….“ She looked over “Oh shit!”

Dropping the bags, and the coffees on the floor as she went to Lat’s side “Shit…come on come on…” as she gave her boss a bit of a shake then finding some water dipped a tea towel used for cleanup. Wringing it out Sky put the cloth to Lat’s head, as Coffee Imp scared and worried as chattered behind her.

"Ya…I hope Big Bear is…on the com also cause we could really use her right now”

“Calling Risri for medical attention.” ….. “Confirm…..call….”

Risri stopped what she was doing at the sound of Lat’s voice in the comm. She jumped up from where she was sitting and ran into the house. Lat’s voice had sounded weak. Picking up her bracelet from where she had left it, she fiddled with the buttons, “Latilda?” she answered tentative. Her gaze flew to where Dragaur stood having followed her into the house. “Latilda, answer me.” She tried again. Her face showing her worry.

She started moving frantically, in her heart she knew something was wrong. Something did not feel right. She changed from the dress she was wearing into her armor, moving swiftly. “I don’t know but I feel like I need it today” she answered Dragaur’s raised eyebrow. Placing a kiss on his lips, “I’m going to Stormwind, I’ll call you on the comm when I know what’s going on.” She moved outside, shifting quickly and flying back towards Stormwind.

She flew to the office, landing and shifting to her Kaldorei form. She felt the extra layer of wards as she pushed the door open. “Sky? What happened?” Her eyes flew to Latilda’s form, scanning and looking for signs of bleeding or broken bones. She moved to kneel next to the two, carefully checking for injury she felt the worgen girl’s head for any damage. “Latilda, please” she whispered. Her eyes closed she pulled from the direction from the park the energy she needed, speaking softly in Darnassian. The green energy flew from Risri’s hands to spread around Latilda.

Lat’s body was fine. No significant physical injuries. It was all inside. She was….drained, if you will. She wasn’t going to awaken any time soon, though. however, Risri would sense that something was off…and the nature magic would not be enough to offset it. Lat’s life energy was still there…but it was weak..drained.

Sky would have a slightly better sense for it. The closeness of fel and shadow magic would let her note an increased trace of both….but it was fading fast.

There would also be slight traces of blood outside, but the body of the man earlier was nowhere to be found….the toss made it unlikely that a trail would exist.

There would also be the note on the table….but it wouldn’t stand out.

Looking up and handing Big Bear the damp tea towel and whispering something that sent Coffee Imp backing up and out of the way.

"I found her like this something was…wrong you know? Thought I would come to the office and I found her laying on the floor. Look I don’t know if you can smell it but…how do I put this…the darkness she welcomed into her? You can smell it…sort of coming off her…not as much now but when I came in, it’s not quite Fel but you get a sense for this creepy shit when you have studied it long enough.“

She stood up offering as much space as she could “Things are moving now Big Bear and I think the Boss is wrapped up in it. She’s been in some sort of a fight, no cuts or such but that’s blood on her.”

Backing up she closed and stared to re-ward the door. “This will take me a moment then what do you need me to do?”

Risri glanced over at Sky as she moved back to the door. Turning back to Latilda, her voice low, “Sky, I think she’s not actually physically hurt. Whatever we are smelling, it attacked her mind. I can’t help with that. Maybe” she paused and looked back at Sky, “Let’s move her back to the apartment, call on her cousin. She’s dealt with this kind of thing.”

Risri pulled an item from her pouch and spoke quietly, “Dra, Latilda’s hurt. I’m going to stay with her at her apartment tonight. I love you.” she said quietly before putting the device back in her pouch.

Risri gathered Latilda in her arms. “I need you to finish up the wards here, then see if you can get a hold of the others. Make sure they are all safe, tell them not to come here today. I’ll touch base once I’ve had her cousin check her over.” She nodded to Sky to open the door back up. “I don’t want anyone in here until we find out what did this.”

Sky worked quickly at the door checking and double checking. It was in a way almost too easy how the Fel flowed making for stronger spells. She watched as Big Bear scooped up the boss like she was a child. It made her sick to see that. They should have all gone up to the bunker.

“Look I can do that then I want to make sure the apartment is safe I can take any calls over the com back there. If you think that cousin of hers can help then that is a great place to start. I’ll only be a few moments behind you. If whatever in her head comes back out to play you may need more than just the two of you to subdue it.”

Once done she pulled her com out of her pocket. “Hey news team this is Sky do you read? This is an emergency check in. Please respond back and do not come into the office.”

The sound of gun fire came over the comm with Wes's reply, "Sky. Afraid I'm a tad busy. Going to disengage here and check back in an hour. Don't lose the hat Sky." @skystoneseat

If you want a scoop, how about the five best lovers in Azeroth? You can do the research yourself, and I know who you can start with.

A glazed, annoyed look, though there was a mild blush on her cheeks. “Do ya now? That’s not a scoop, that’s a skeevish attempt at hack journalism. Sex is a private thing that should bet kept between two people, and I don’t sleep about. So skedaddle, ya git.”

Looks up “Boss where do you find these people? Even the Dal Daily doesn’t post smut”

“Flirt butts. They seem to find me appealing and wanna try to offer me a scoop that nobody else can. Aka their lover parts.” *shrugs* “I normally just sass them off or ignore them.”

Taps her hat “See creepy on the outside no one flirts with this, really you should give it a try your to pretty for them to resist”

“Well, some of us don’t have time to spend 30 plus years in a book practicing creepiness. And people do flirt with you. You just stick to only tall people.”

Wes happens to walk through the office at that moment lost in his own thoughts. He passes Lat and Sky, giving a smile with a nod as he continues on his way. @latilda-rommel @skystoneseat

Sarah has no idea what’s going on or what a lot of these words mean, but she’s happy that lots of people love Miss Latilda too. She’s a nice lady.

She sits in the corner with Mouse, wondering what flirting means. It probably means to hug somebody.

Sky offers him her non creepy smile as he comes in to the office then looks back at Lat “See you can’t.” She turns her attention back to him. “Hey you want a coffee? I was going to put a fresh pot on”

Lat gestures at Wes. “That doesn’t count? And what about that one elf that one time? Or that knight dork in front of the square? People flirt with you all the time.”

“Are we flirting every time I make a pot of coffee then?”

Bringing an unlit cigarette to his lips, Wes waves at Sky over his shoulder, “Hate to turn down the offer but I’m just on my way out. Rain check?” He gave a quick look back at Sky as he left through the door to get another look at her before he was gone.

Demons

There is only one demon she likes. One and even that one made her leery, at first.

If she hadn’t found Sky so interesting and sane, Coffee Imp would not have been allowed in the office.

Now, though she’s like a pet and she makes pretty good coffee and tea.

“No! He must be purged!”

“Coffee imp is on the payroll! Leave him alone! He’s harmless!”

"I'm sorry gent but I can't let you harm the imp. There'll be hell to pay if the imp is harmed and I don't mean by you. I mean all of Azeroth will suffer if these women don't get their morning coffee. Especially that one there. She's damn impossible without java in her. Trust me!" @areniaagn @latilda-rommel
