all joking aside whenever i see people speak sarcastically about "posting is not activism" or "queer kids in kuffiyehs" i think either you don't understand hasbara or you don't understand zionists. i have palestinian friends who have been blacklisted from their industry for saying something as benign as "free palestine." and you think it's petty of people to demand a public demonstration of support for palestinians? there are many conversations to be had about social media activism and performative activism but you're not having them if you're pretending it all carries the same weight and has the same impact.

My mom used to write code for the US Navy, and one of the first things she drilled into me when school was teaching us LogoWriter was "A computer is only as smart as the person who programmed it." The creators of these systems have full control over how they operate and what kind of input they're "trained" on. They were just lazy about it, and now the consequences are too big and costly to be worth fixing.

Don't let them lie to you about how this works. They just don't want to take it offline (costs money) and spend the time and money actually doing a good job. They just don't want to admit that it wasn't ready to be released.

I don't think the Large Language Models behind "AI" will ever work as advertised. Stringing tokens (words or fragments of words) together based on the probability of them being being seen next to each other on the internet is never going to produce intelligent answers, because there is no understanding at all of what anything actually means.

For example it doesn't know that poisons are bad for people beyond that the words "poisons" "are" "bad" "for" "people" hopefully show up as a more common combination than "poisons" "are" "good" "for" "people" (which is something I may have just ruined)

It also can't tell the difference between facts, metaphors, satire, and just straight up trolling. They are simply hoping that there are more copies of true statements than false ones to weigh the probabilities enough in favor of the true statements being reconstructed out of the range of all possible outputs. As we have seen, this method clearly doesn't work.

Maybe with enough time and computer power things can get better, but given that they currently use resources of a small country to be as bad as they are, there's simply no way they can be scaled to the point of always being accurate. And more power still won't solve the basic underlying issue of all LLMs, there is still no understanding of anything being said.

Reblogging for the great summary of how predictive text AI works. It's basically a word guesser/autocorrect. There's no intelligence, not even artificial. It's not thinking, it literally cannot do that.

Why even bother asking a question of something that you know will confidently give you wrong advice, when there's no way of knowing if the string of words it spits out are accurate or not on a topic you aren't knowledgeable about?

The amount of time you then need to find out if the answer was right or not is going to be equal to (or more than) what you'd need just to look up that answer somewhere reliable to begin with.
