Tsundere Seme's BL fan blog. Gets angry when shizz ain't gay. Grumpy academic obsessed with tropes. Can't spell in multiple languages. Secret real identity. Answers to ABL. Gender = yes/and. Will spoil your salad. #notsorry #queeragenda #ThaiBL #KoreanBL #TaiwaneseBL (formerly you_had_me_at_BL)

I feel like we all just collectively glossed over this bit, but Cher and Oyei referring to Yak as their son even in private is so fucking funny. Like these screenshots out of context you’d think, ‘oh is the cute boxing gym owner/trainer couple buying powdered milk formula for their young child?’

The child in question who is going to waste away without his soy milk:

Yak be like, "I say my brother reminds me of my dad ONE TIME and now Cher won't shut up about it. I'M NOT YOUR SON!"

Hi ABL! I was wondering if you have recs for bl couples where a younger seme/top aggressively pursues an older, initially-unwilling uke/bottom?

I realized this trope was my absolute JAM when I fell hard and fast for Wei Zhiyuan x Wei Qian, Sun Boxiang x Lu Zhigang, and Yongjie x Xingsi. Bonus points for age gap, stepbrothers trope or the older uke being endlessly indulgent?

I mainly watch China and Taiwan bls, so I’ll love anything from there. I’ll take recs from other countries too, they might become my first foray into non-mandarin bls

I know this is a somewhat specific request so thank you sm if you manage to come up with anything! I really appreciate all the work you put into this blog ☺️💜

Oooo MY FAVORITE!!!

Hyung Romances! (wrap-up post)

I call these hyung romances because that's like noona romances but gay.

Specifically you said:

younger seme aggressively pursues an older initially-unwilling uke

I am utter TRASH for this! YES PLEASE!

Japan 2022 GaGa

AKA Minato Coin Laundry AKA Wash My Heart! AKA Minato Shouji Koin Randorii AKA Minato Shouji Coin Laundry

Younger seme older uke, very clearly yaoi derived dynamic, 10 year age gap. I love this show so much. This is by far the best long running example that really dwells on this trope, Shin is very much the aggressor also very much still a high school kid. Minato is very much NOT.

Japan 2022 Viki & GaGa

Also from Japan, another 10 year gap, and a flipping genius version. This time both parties are older, so there’s less of a stigma around the age gap, but there is stigma about the one being the other’s boss.

This show had me from the moment they broke the egg yolk with the chopsticks in the opening credits for episode one. It’s about a younger man with a long cherished crush on his boss (ten years older and going through a mid life crisis) who decides to save and seduce said man with pancakes. It’s wholesome, comforting, sexy, and a very necessary narrative about still having hope, interests, and openness to affection at any age. It’s coming of age/queerness packaged in a subtle critique of expectations around masculinity and love and loneliness... and it’s beautiful. Full review.

Thailand 2021 YouTube

Sib is quite a bit younger than Gene and defines aggressive pursuer. Gene is out of university and established in his career, Sib is still in college.

Thailand criticizes itself and the BL industry while simultaneously giving us classic seme/uke with great chemistry in a one-two punch of “we love it, but are we supposed to? and must we think this hard, yet enjoy it SO MUCH?” This show won’t appeal or make sense to those who don’t already have at least some Thai BL watching experience. What Lovely Writer does, at heart, is reexamine Thai BL has done to queerness, but in a very gentle way that has more to do with Thai BL growing up than any actual queer authenticity. It’s not parody or pastiche, but it is self reflective and trying to correct for some chronic mistakes. Whether it is ultimately successful in this matter is going to depend on the watcher’s relationship to BL and queer identity. But that’s what makes this show beautiful, interesting, and thought provoking. And I, for one, applaud the effort even if I didn’t personally connect to the characters.

Thailand 2020 YouTube

Thailand’s first real stab at this dynamic as a main couple and it so worked for me. There are many who find this BL too slow and wooden, but I loved it.

I think of this as a paragon of Thailand’s softer BL style, since Oxygen uses every BL trope in the playbook for one of the gentlest lowest angst BLs ever made. This one showcases how far Thailand is moving BL from its yaoi roots, and is a prime example of the sweet “new BL” model for which Thailand is the main advocate (Korea is liking it a lot these days too, tho). My first watch along

Thailand 2016 YouTube

Guess who started this trope in Thailand? Yeah, sometimes I forget too. But they are not just classic sunshine/tsunder but classic younger/older. Just not by much.

This is the BL that launched a hundred BLs. No literally, it was SOTUS’s international success that pretty much built the Thai BL industry into the juggernaut it is today. People have baggage around SOTUS, I have nostalgia. Trigger warning on bully hazing. Review here

Thailand 2020 YouTube

Younger boy wants to court older boy and does and… that’s it. No really that’s the WHOLE STORY. There is actually no angst, drama, or, indeed plot. But are they the softest bois ever to BL as a main couple? Yes they are.

*pulp warning*

Private Lessons

Korea 2020 GaGa

A BL short from Strongberry that I love, it's age gap and teacher/student (catnip por moi). The chemistry is slightly off though, but stil I do love this one for the dynamic. Certainly worth watching especially if this is your trope since it's like 8 minutes long and very stylish.

MingKit MarkKit

2 Moons (VERY side dish) YouTube 2 Moons 2 YouTube (major side dish) Gen Y (leads) Gen Y 2 (sides again in LTR)

Thailand’s premier version of this dynamic I just lumped them all into one category. Only in 2 Moons 2 are they played by different actors, otherwise it is all KimCop, and who can complain about that? If you want to watch specifically for this dynamic than go for Gen Y. Trash watch here

SIDE DISH CORNER

Not Me

DanYok is an age gap, but it isn’t really the point or the plot of their romantic arc

THE THAI PULPS

You’re My Sky (SanAei)

Side could (and only good part of this show) SanAei are a classic uni age gap pairing. San is a bit of a spoiled rich kid jock who identifies the older nerd character as HIS and is just like, MINE. That’s MY elder gay.

Brothers (KhunKaow)

This is not a good show, but side couple Khun & Kaow are great in it. Khun is in university and Kaow has a small baking business.

Don’t Say No (LeonPob)

Leon and Pob qualify. That’s all I have to say about that.

Top Secret Together and Love By Chance both have sub plots of high school boys pursuing college ones, but the one didn’t go anywhere and the other went very very bad, so yeah… no. Although I would personally LOVE to see this done well.

HIStory 3: the BL that shall not be named (BoXiang & ZhiGang)

Also appear in HIStory 4: Close to You

The side characters in H3:MODC (and cameos in H4) BoXiang & ZhiGang have a huge age gap, 12 years, and it is a big deal for their relationship. When they start out BoXiang is a desperate himbo high school kid and ZhiGang is a small business owner. BoXiang’s friends tease him more for his lust over such a much older man than for being gay.

Bonus on this one, there is some very high (and it's Taiwan so) very well done heat. That said, the main couple will, in fact, wreck your psyche for life. Proceed with caution.

BONUS POINTS ROUND

Stepbrothers trope

HIStory 4: Close to You (sides)

YongJie is quite a bit younger than XingSi, not sure on the specifics but he’s in middle school when XingSi is in high school and still in college when XingSi has his own business.

Addicted has the stepbrothers trope but not the age gap.

Older uke being endlessly indulgent

Thailand 2023 YouTube

Based on a y-novel by Faddest (En of Love) about an engineering student and a dentist (shocker). This is just a soft sweet cotton candy fluff piece about a younger boy who pursues an older boy and then manufactures silly gay drama. Nothing wrong with that. But I don’t think this style of BL really appeals to a very large market share. Will I rewatch it? Sure. Will anyone else? Nope.

If you want your endlessly indulgent older gay, this is the you crack, they made if for you.

*pulp warning*

Thailand 2021 WeTV

It’s not really relevant to the story, but Tan is younger. Not only that, he’s Bun’s friends younger brother. Bun is very indulgent, but in a grown up way.

I like MoD a lot but I’m conflicted over it being actual BL. It’s a great gay romantic suspense, although the mystery element is its weakness. MaxTul, the Kings of chemistry, are, of course, perfect and perfectly cast, but their romance thread is more a distraction than an addition. Still, I could watch them make-out the phonebook. Watch along here

Japan 2015 grey

AKA Seven Days: Monday-Thursday AND Seven Days: Friday-Sunday Japan

Seryou kinda counts as the pursuer, but the dynamic is very very weak in this one. Still the way he asks to use Yuzuru’s first name (so CHEEKY) and the way he says “senpai” in SUCH a cute way makes me so happy. And Yuzuru is NOTHING is not indulgent, it kinda defines his character. I mean he just LETS him call him by his FIRST name... right away.

Never doubt my ability to recommend this show. One of the best live action yaois ever made, with perfectly structured angst, fantastic characters and acting, and no problematic tropes (rare in Japanese BL). The leads have excellent chemistry although it’s low heat there’s still some really cute mutual kisses.

Just Taiwan

Taiwan 2018 Viki

Seme uke is VERY weak with this one but the younger character is certainly the pursuer. It’s SO GOOD.

Lin Pei Yu directs this is a sports romance (volleyball) with a good boy/bad boy pairing, and mu favorite of the HIStory franchise. There is no clear seme/uke. Ostensibly it's high school set but Taiwan doesn't care about age appropriate actors. It's a very soft sweet romance with some ridiculously easily overcome conflict. There's great kisses but it's medium heat. The side dishes are the stepbrother trope but they’re very tame, and there’s no other triggers. It's not just my favorite of the franchise, it’s one of my favorite BLs with a perfect happy ending.

As you see above I mostly had to take you to Japan and Thailand for this one. Considering your preferences try Japan first, it's closer in DNA to Taiwanese stuff, but it won't go as high heat. I fyou want the heat, you'll need to try the Thai stuff. I would start with Lovely Writer.

Okay I think I have given you enough and, unless I miss my guess, I may have tempted you to try some Japanese BL.

Comes to the weirder (and weird hair) side. We have pancakes.

Yeah I think you should watch Old Fashion Cupcake.

EVERYONE SHOULD WATCH OLD FASHION CUPCAKE!!!

I like your definition of seme as the active pursuer in the narrative and uke as the resister… Does this make Intouch the seme rather than Korn in UWMA? I also feel that King is the one chasing Ram in My Engineer - he basically stalks him and even their kiss starts off with King going ‘your driving me crazy, I can’t resist anymore’ - is King actually the seme?

Trying to think of other pairs where the uke is actually the seme in disguise - I initially thought that Rome and Pick fall under this dynamic too but Pick really comes across as a tsundere seme instead… and in Tonhon Chonlatee, although Chonlatee is chasing after Tonhon he does it very passively by getting another seme to flirt aggressively with him to make Tonhon jealous- so I think Chonlatee is still the uke in this narrative.

What do you think?

Oooo, hum. Interesting. Hummm.

Aggressive & Autonomous Ukes in BL

This really made me think about Seven Days.

Ya'll know it's one of my all time favorite BLs. One is tempted to say, for old school yaoi reasons, that Seryou is the seme. He does make most of the courting gestures (gifts of food, escort, texting, setting up dates), but Yuzuru makes a lot of the first physical contact moves (dragging Seryou around, hair touch, kissing him). They clearly have different love languages (Seryou = gifts & acts of service, Yusuru = quality time & physical touch), but they are basically equally pursuing a relationship, even if they are both scared it's not permanent.

So it actually could be argued that there is no seme/uke in this narrative.

There are also those BL pairs for whom while there might be a power differential (older/younger, shy/aggressive, unequal possessiveness, size/muscle difference, out/closeted) but there actually simply is no established seme/uke dynamic: Hsia YuHao & Qiu ZiXuan in HIStory 2: Crossing the Line (Taiwan), Win & Tops in Ingredients (Thailand), Ace & Sky in My Day (Pinoy), Ram & King in My Engineer (Thailand), Tee & Mork in My Tee (Thailand), In Soo & Min Sung in Wish You (Korea), Yu Zhen & Shi Lei in Be Loved In House (Taiwan), Paper & Fah in Close Friend (Thailand), Wild Dog & Flying Dagger in Long Time No See (Korea), Sea & Tin in Friend Forever (Thailand), Kaeng & Puth in Y-Destiny (Thailand).

Under such circumstances there really isn't a seme/uke of any easily definable kind (despite any physical, sexual, personality, or narrative cues that we are given to the contrary). The story simply isn't relying on a dysmorphic power play to move froward. The push pull of pursuit and aggression, desire for connection and fear of rejection, doesn't require yaoi archetypes to function - if that makes sense. These ones are basically just gay romances.

Uke Forced to Undertake the Seme Role

KornIn (Until We Meet Again) is an interesting case. I would put CopyNampu from Top Secret Together into this category too. (And they make for a nice contrast.) Because, as you note, the uke is doing ALL the pursuing.

Which makes us think he is actually the seme. And one could certainly argue that case. I don’t think so, though, and here’s why:

I would say Intouch & Nampu are still ukes because they also get really frustrated about the fact that they have been forced into pursuit. They don’t enjoy being the aggressor in the relationship and it doesn’t come naturally to them. They both practice the chase as if it were a tease - flirty, fierce kittens (rather than bold take-charge dudes). It's like both Intouch and Nampu know they are meant to be the uke, but their seme is so reserved and reluctant that they are forced to be the ones in charge of making a relationship happen and they do not like it. Hence they are also big old brats about it.

So not “a reluctant hero” but “a reluctant seme.” (Ha, I kill me. Looks like we have a new archetype.)

Nampu even has a breakdown where he articulates his frustration to this effect. It’s after that breakdown that Copy finally realizes he’d going to lose Nampu if he doesn’t take control, that he finally assumes the role of aggressor. Much to both their relief.

Both these story arcs could have gone the Fiat route (caregiver codependancy spiral - Nuea nearly heads down this path in Y-Destiny and Sky definitely could have gone there in Golden Blood) but instead these ukes grabbed their own destinies.

It might be argued that, narratively speaking, Intouch is punished for this choice... as many ukes have been before him.

And, frankly, under yaoi conceits that's the risk an aggressive uke takes - that his seme will lash out at him for his autonomy (rape, murder, death) or self destruct and spiral (suicide, abandonment) because he, the seme, has not been granted control of the narrative (AKA the relationship). See the early dark BL from Japan and China for what I'm talking about. (Or don't, because it's real rough going.)

In fact, one could make the case that Intouch is representing for early BL in this regard. He's behaving like a nonstandard uke and the yaoi gods will not put up with that shizz so he is fated to die for his hubris and that's why Pharm is so timid upon reincarnation....

ooo I kinda like that idea.

Other aggressive ukes to consider?

  • LuLin in My Esports Genius Brother,
  • Yi in Coffee Melody,
  • Folk in My Gear and Your Gown (acts the seme faen fatal role with the main uke character),
  • Mark in Love Mechanics (acts the seme faen fatal role with the main uke character in Tossera),
  • Team in UWMA (must act the protector role fro his friends),
  • Bank and Sky in Golden Blood (spoiled prince variants),
  • Pukong in 2gether
  • Sang Ha in Mr Heart
  • Sun in My Dear Loser
  • Rome in Puppy Honey
  • Nuea in Y-Destiny (spoiled prince variant),
  • Han Tae Joo in Where Your Eyes Linger?, (see Nuea in Y-Destiny and Sky in Golden Blood these ukes are all the spoiled prince archetype - which carries with it aggression in the guise of rich kid authority but also need due to pedestal isolation and loneliness, waves at @heretherebedork who loves this one)
  • even possibly Kang Seo Joon in To My Star (celebrity can also qualify for spoiled prince)
  • and of course, my personal favorite Kiyoi in Utsukushii Kare - absolutely brilliant but also it’s obvious all along that Hira is the seme, those who couldn’t understand this just never read dark yaoi, watch me lose my mind over this glorious BL here

A lot of these ukes are punished (by the narrative) with ego deflation, heartbreak, and rejection for the grave sin of actively wanting. Also note that most of them are paired with serious players or singularly reluctant tsundere semes?

Once they are in a pairing this uke really enjoys being teased, indulged, and spoiled - developing slightly tsundere characteristics of their own. I guess they’ve earned it.

CEO Boyfriends BL

CEO Boyfriends is a pretty specific trope to Asia, and Cdramas love it best (irony). In the west, we have a similar trope more commonly called “billionaire boyfriend.” The difference is that the CEO version implies a strong office setting. While the billionaire trope implies a wealth barrier and display. Don’t get me wrong, they intersect and pretty much crossover (both implying a power differential), but there is a subtle difference in audience expectations.

However, these aren’t common in BL.

  1. Partly because BL tends to skew towards younger characters.
  2. Partly because the funding requirements to properly execute this kind of character (and meet audience expectations) is prohibitively expensive for BL.
  3. And finally because Thailand dominates BL, and they don’t really care about this trope. (Nor, for that matter, does Korea, our up-and-comer.)

I should add: CEO also often is ties to the “plucky/long suffering heroine” trope (AKA cinderella) and the “competency porn” trope (which is the idea that a person is attractive partly because they are very very good at something in a professional sphere).

BL With a CEO Theme/Aspect

Warning, a lot of these are not very good.

CHINA

Irresistible Love: Secret of the Valet & Irresistible Love 2: Uncontrolled Love (2016) - Exists in 2 parts/movies, 2nd movie has two alternate endings: a kinda happy and a definitely NOT happy, usually found grey on YT. I not-so-secretly love this BL: Kidnapping, whipping boy, obsession, mutilation, very hard fought happy ending. Absolutely classic Chinese BL pre-censorship. It’s a wild melodramatic ride.

Mr. CEO is Falling in Love with Him (2017 censored) - I actually kinda like this but it is very much censored. It has themes of revenge, salvation, infiltration, and domesticity. Hard to find and the rip is terrible. It’s clear it was filmed as a gay romance and then severely cut - like Advance Bravely

Capture Lover (2020 censored) - the ending is a touch confusing but basically this is the rich kid seme with nothing better to do, put to work in an office, falls hard for the strict boss, moves himself in and aggressively seduces him. Like a grown up Addicted. (Features Han Jing Chen, China’s Singto.)

TAIWAN

Dark Blue and Moonlight (2017)

HIStory 3: Trapped (2019) - it’s mafia, not CEO, but has a lot of the same tropes including flaunting his wealth, taking baby shopping, and NICE suits.

Because of You (2020) - it’s not QUITE there because it’s sort of more a messy soap of 3 rich brothers, but it has some of the tropes.

More?

Some that don’t specifically quality as a CEO romance but are office set boss/subordinate or rivals, and might satisfy the itch around this power dynamic.

  • Beloved Enemy (China 2017)
  • Ossan’s Love (Japan & Hong Kong)
  • Docchi Mo Docchi AKA Same Difference (Japan 2014)
  • My Day (Pinoy 2020)
  • My Lascivious Boss AKA ÔNG CHỦ, ĐỪNG ĐẾN ĐÂY (Vietnam 2021)
  • There was one other Pinoy BL that tried this trope but it was truly terrible and I DNF’d blocked it out of my mind.
  • What Zabb Man (Thailand 2022)
  • Cutie Pie (Thailand 2022) - this is more the billionaire BF trope

Hope this helps.

Hi! I have a lot of things to say... maybe not much but 1. sorry for my messy english 2. I absolutely love your blog, every night before I sleep I always read your posts because they make make me laugh and also teach me lots of things 3. Its been a while since the last time I saw Takumi-kun movies but I remember that i really loved them a lot. Im really interested in your full opinion about the movies, the good, the bad, the worst things because your explanations are just top notch. Thank you

1. Please never apologize for messy English. Mine is ghastly and I grew up speaking the darn stuff. It's the chaos monkey of languages.

2. Thank you very much! Glad to be your bedtime reading.

3. well, okay....

Quick Pitch(ish)

Takumi-Kun - Japan 2007-2011

Honestly, I am not sure how qualified I am to talk about this series since I didn’t watch it at the time. (Honestly where was I? 2007? South America maybe?) So when I watched them I did so grey on YouTube and I watched them in this order:

  1. Takumi-kun 1: And The Spring Breeze Whispers (original cast) 2007 - 5/10
  2. fan made Daimao flashback cut to become first version 2011 - 6/10
  3. Takumi-kun 2: Rainbow Colored Glass 2009 - 5/10
  4. Takumi-kun 3: The Beauty of Detail 2010 - 5/10
  5. Takumi-kun 5: That, Sunny Blue Sky 2011 - 5/10
  6. Takumi-kun 4: Pure (side characters) 2010 - 4/10

6/10 was the highest rating I gave any of them and that was for the fan made cut! Frankly that seems generous in retrospect. I also read the original manga, and they are terrible. Like really bad. Worse than the first live action and that’s saying something. With a general 5/10 feeling that would put this one in the RECOMMENDED ONLY IF YOU HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO camp. But it this case there are a few reasons to watch this series, read on...

For those who don’t know Takumi-kun (like 2 Moons/2 Moons 2) shot the first movie and then recast for the remaining adaptations. The new lead couple, dubbed Daimao (for Watanabe Daisuke and Hamao Kyousuke), were a sensation at the time, with great visuals and chemistry that really struck the right cord with yaoi fandom (and that WAS the fandom at the time, there was no BL fandom). They did a total of 3 movies together, one per year, and make an appearance as a side couple in installment 4. The actors, according to what little I’ve been able to find out, had a rough time of it back in the day - dealing with the first big skinship agenda, crazy fandom, homophobic reactions, and companion career impacts.

SO WHY WATCH IT?

Like TharnType (and for many of the same reasons) Takumi-kun is one of the most (in)famous adaptations (in the history of BL). It also has similar themes and issues. But honestly, if we like Mame’s stuff then we owe it to ourselves, and our fetishes, to figure out why and what’s going on (in our own psyches and in the history of BL/yaoi).

Also, this series is basically the start of everything, the first real BL (as we see them now), the first BL sensation, the first fab chemistry. So if you’re into the history of the genre then, go for it.

But honestly? These are the only reasons I suggest watching this series... now. These days there’s just a lot better BL out there.

A SORT OF REVIEW

Beautiful fragile traumatized Takumi escapes the horrors of his youth by attending and elite boarding school. However, things aren’t great because his coping mechanism is touch-aversion, timidity, and fear. Alone and bullied, Takumi is barely surviving until handsome, rich, popular Gii becomes obsessed with him. Oh and they’re roommates.

2007′s original Series 1 with the different cast is okay (I guess?) and a more honest adaptation of the original yaoi (which is SO NOT good, did I mention that already), but not worth watching first if you can get the fan cut Daimao. If you can’t you’ll probubly need to watch it or you won’t understand what’s happening. And, last I checked, that first movie was the only one NOT on GaGa so I think you gotta go grey for it still.

In general the story is non-linear and a bit nonsensical. There’s a lot of miscommunication and Gii doing illogical/stupid stuff to “protect” Takumi that really just hurts Takumi (and is the narrative’s excuse for driving a wedge between the couple but smacks of audience manipulation). I had to read the manga to really understand all the reasons and implications behind Takumi’s backstory and behavior (we never get Gii’s). And since the manga is worse, to this day I am occasionally confused, especially by Gii’s choices.

From a heritage BL film perspective this first movie (but also bits of the others) showcases how yaoi framing, filming angles, body positioning (staging), and cinematography for BL uses the origin manga as a storyboard. This filming style would go on to influence Korean BL in particular (see Color Rush, Cherry Blossoms) and is still used in Japanese BL today (see Utsukushii Kare).

Expect the dark side of BL in terms of trigger warnings (let’s see... rape, incest, bullying, death of a friend/side character, and more) - but Takumi-kun ends (mostly) happily (each movie) so don’t worry about that.

It is the origin of lots of tropes (in BL) like the kabedon and public claiming, but also more friendly couple ones like head in lap and symbolic back hug

Also excessive eye blinking. It’s kinda a joke in fandom.

The name negotiations have arrived! Linguistic discussions are always fascinating. @absolutebl And they're so cute about it.

They're just darling and awkward about it. Their friendship is so easy going until they have to think about it and then it all goes out the window. Love them for that.

I love them so much. They're just so utterly gone for each other that every moment of affection or closeness just makes them the most awkward men in the world because they don't quite know how to stand together yet.

And the negotiation ends with nothing changing because they really do need to talk about the love first before they change the nomenclature.

Me, realizing I only have a month before I'll be watching another MAME series.

I swear MAME is the main reason I don't tend to like enemies to lovers.

Sigh. The trope I love but done... here.

Fine, underwater is still for the gays. At least we can all agree on that.

Hi! I’m watching City of Stars and it’s so refreshing to see a couple who communicate so well in a BL… the minute a problem arises they talk to each other and sort it out!

Why do you think miscommunication and unnecessary drama due to stupid misunderstandings snd people refusing to just talk to each other is so prevalent in BL? Is it lazy writing or do some people actually enjoy it?

Avatar

Well I think it's lazy writing but it's still possible some might enjoy it... especially given the popularity of certain books and their tropes.
