Nüshu (literally “women’s writing” in Chinese) is a syllabic script created and used exclusively by women in the Jiangyong County in Hunan province of southern China. Up until the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) women were forbidden access to formal education, and so Nüshu was developed in secrecy as a means to communicate. Since its discovery in 1982, Nüshu remains to be the only gender-specific writing system in the world. Read more here.

Finnish loan words part 1
Like any language, Finnish has a lot of loan words. A lot of them of them came from our neighbour countries Sweden and Russia, and more recently a lot of new words are coming from English. Here are some taken from Russian:
ikkuna comes from окно (okno), meaning a window lusikka comes from ложка (ložka), meaning spoon värttinä comes from веретено(vereteno), meaning spindle majakka comes from маяк(majak), meaning lighthouse pappi comes from поп(pop), meaning priest piirakka comes from пирог(pirog) meaning pie saapas comes from сапог(sapog) meaning boot rusakko comes from русак(rusak) meaning brown hare siisti comes from чистый(tšistyi) meaning clean, tidy tavara comes from товар(tovar) meaning an item toveri comes from товарищ(tovarištš) meaning comrade

In Finland we do not have a “Valentine’s Day” so to say, here the 14th of February is a day dedicated to friends, which I think is nicer than having to stress over not having a special someone. Let’s celebrate platonic love!
(According to wikipedia thujas and pear blossoms symbolize friendship, so there ya go)
