Fun and easy habits to develop as a pagan!
Or, a few ideas of routine pagan stuff I personally engage in, or wish to start engaging in.
  • Opening the curtains and taking a quick moment to appreciate the daylight (or the darkness) of the outside. Draw from it the energy you will need for the day!
  • After waking up, saying a short prayer to a deity of your choice (you could very well change it up based on your intent, or always pray to the same if you are devoted to one in particular). A simple “Good morning. I will try to honor you today” shows that you’re thinking of them!
  • Taking a little time every once in a while to learn about local plants, trees or fauna! Little by little, you’ll learn to recognize them when out in nature. Nothing more rewarding!
  • Playing a song, or simply instrumental music that reminds you of your spirituality when doing chores, preparing for the day or the night, etc.  Useful if the day-to-day makes you feel disconnected from your spirituality!
  • Every once in a while, cleansing a spiritual space by simply cleaning it out before lighting a fragant candle or incense. Always makes me feel refreshed!
  • Focusing on a picture of a deity/deities (or spirit/spirits, or ancestor/ancestors) of your choice in adoration. What can they teach you today? How can you honor them? If a new and inspiring idea comes to your mind, why not note it down!
  • Diffuse a smell (either by candle, incense, essential oil diffuser or else) while getting prepared for the day! If such a topic interests you, you could learn about how different smells affect us, and how you can use that in this specific ritual. With what intent do you wish to start your day?
  • If you have a book/books on mythology that pertains to your deity/deities or their related culture, why not read a few pages every once in a while, just for fun! Like the song/music I mentioned before, this an easy way to start your day thinking of your spirituality.
  • Looking up art: depictions of deities, or if you worship nature spirits, pictures of the animal or plant the form of which it takes.
  • Adopting a deity’s symbol for the day! You can do that by wearing a piece of devotional jewelry, or even drawing a rune/sigil/symbol on your skin so as to keep the deity in mind.
  • If you’re reading this, it means you use tumblr! Why not use such social networks to talk to other pagans who share your practices? There’s lots to learn from each other! Plus, you may make good friends this way.
  • Look outside, observe the weather. What color’s the sky? How strong is the wind blowing? In what direction are the clouds being blown? Stay in tune with nature! You may even become able to tell which signs foretell which weather events!
  • Make stuff you find in nature into amulets. For example, if a leaf, rock, acorn, fallen branch or else catches your attention, why not bring it home as a lucky charm? If you possess such a skill, you could even make it into jewelry!

— ways to cleanse that aren’t smoke

i’m moving into a dorm soon and i’m not allowed to burn incense, so here are some ways i’m planning to cleanse!

  • sound! i love cleansing with music, my singing bowl, or bells.
  • selenite/other cleansing crystals. i use my selenite plate to cleanse and charge my jewelry, crystals, and other tools. i also use my selenite wand to cleanse and charge tools!
  • light. sunlight or moonlight can cleanse or charge tools! i typically see it used more for charging but i’ve used it for cleansing as well.
  • wind! i enjoy going outside on windy days, standing still, and feeling the wind push the stale and stagnant energy out of me.
  • salt/magical powders! i make blends of salt and herbs for spellwork. one of my favorites is a salt, ground sage, and eggshells. when i clean my altar, ill spread the salt mix over the tabletop and and by wiping it off, it cleanses the altar. this can also be done on the floors of a room or a house, and swept or vacuumed up!
  • lemons. lemon is one of my favorite cleansers! i love drinking lemon water, i have lemon in my shampoo so im extra cleansed when i shower, and sometimes ill cut a lemon into quarters, put salt on both sides, and leave it in a room to cleanse the space!

BoS/Grimoire/BoM Prompts and Ideas for the Pop Culture Witch / Pop Culture Pagan!

If you’re like me, you might spend a lot of time searching for prompts to help fill pages in your Book of Shadows, Grimoire, Book of Mirrors, whatever you wish to call your magical record keeping log. If you’re also like me, you’re a bit overwhelmed and discouraged by all the prompts that are more so for Wiccan-based paths and the like when you’re not exactly going that route. So, here’s some ideas on what to put in your books if you’re a pop culture practitioner of sorts!

General

  • What are your theories as to pop culture magic(k)/witchcraft/paganism and the like? (I recommend the book “Pop Culture Magic 2.0” by Taylor Ellwood if you need context or ideas for your own theories)
  • What about pop culture magic(k)/witchcraft/paganism appeals to you?
  • Do you also incorporate more “traditional” spirits and the like in your practice? How do things intertwine and work together?

Entities/Spirits/Deities/Etc.

  • Who or what do you work with/worship/devote yourself to?
  • What sort of media do they originate from?
  • When did you start working with/worshipping/devoting yourself to them?
  • What draws you to them?
  • What is their lore and canon?
  • Are there any “alternate universes”/differing canons within their main source? (I.e, do they have different backstories between movies, tv series, comics, games, etc?) If so, how does this affect your practice with them?
  • (If working with archetypes) What archetypes do they represent?
  • (If you interact with the fandom of your media of choice) How does the fandom in general view this character? How does this affect your practice with them?

Offering/Dedication Pages

Something I do in my own personal practice is making offering/dedication pages of sorts. It involves things like making mood boards based on whomever I’m working with, taking magazine clip outs or stickers of things that remind me of them, even writing personal poetry whenever I’m feeling up to the task.

If you’re looking for something more discreet, try doing digital pages of sorts in programs like Notion, OneNote, or other similar programs. Make a main book and store fan art, links to fan fictions, mood boards, personal notes, etc. within the subpages. Even making something akin to a Pinterest board and filling it with things that remind of you them works as well.

I’ll try to update this as I get more ideas or even ideas from any comments left on this post, but I hope this can give you some ideas and help get the ball rolling.

Stay safe, have fun, stay spooky 💜

All About Shadow Work

What is shadow work?

Shadow work is an introspective psychological concept coined by Carl Jung. His belief was that in order to acknowledge our full self, we must fully integrate our shadows as well. The shadow personifies everything that the individual refuses to acknowledge about themselves: the negative habits we have, the things we don't like about ourselves, the things that we don't like to expose to others. Things of that nature.

Shadow work is not a requirement to be spiritual or practice magic.

Shadow work is not inherently a spiritual or magical concept, so it isn't required to be spiritual or to practice magic. I want to give that disclaimer now, because shadow work isn't for everybody. If you are a person with severe trauma or struggle with mental health, please avoid doing shadow work by yourself. Shadow work should always be done in a safe environment, and for some it should only be done in the presence of a therapist. Don't put your mental health at risk because somebody on the internet says you need to do shadow work to be spiritual or practice magic. You can reflect on recent events and make a conscious decision to do better without doing shadow work.

What should you consider before starting shadow work?

Now, when it comes to shadow work there are two questions you should ask yourself before starting. Why do you want to do shadow work? What results do you aim to achieve from doing shadow work? I want you to think about these questions before trying to do shadow work. I see people jump into doing shadow work without thinking about it first, and many people end up struggling as a result.

Determining how your shadow expresses itself.

The shadow is a complex thing for everybody and can express itself in many ways. There will always be multiple aspects to an individual's shadow, so try to address each aspect one at a time.

For example, my own shadow expresses itself in a few ways. Rage and insecurity are two ways. They have different origins and are triggered by different things, so I address them differently.

Find a cheap journal or open a document on your device. Think about the things you hide from people, the negative habits you have, things you struggle with... Write them down. See which ones are related and which aren't. If you aren't totally sure about any of these things, ask your friends and loved ones what negative habits they notice about you. Doing these things will help you get a better idea on what needs to be addressed.

If you use divination, or know somebody who does, you can use divination to help you pinpoint which aspect of your shadow needs to be addressed the most. Asking the simple question "How does my shadow express itself?" can help you, if you are unsure.

Journal prompts, therapy and actively changing.

Journal prompts are the most common ways to do shadow work. By doing journal prompts regularly, you are taking the time to sit with yourself and reflect based on the prompts. Some prompts may have you dig into your past and traumas more than others, so be aware of this before trying any journal prompts. Personally, I suggest doing one journal prompt a week. Dedicate one day of the week to doing shadow work, if possible. It's okay if it has to be every two weeks or longer to start. Just don't overdo it and pressure yourself into doing daily shadow work. That's just unnecessary.

Therapy is where shadow work can be done in a safe environment with a professional to help you. If you can afford it, please consider looking for a therapist you can trust. Coming from a person who has attended therapy, you may not vibe with the first therapist you go to and that's okay. Keep trying and find one you do vibe with. You'll find one out there. By going to therapy you can talk about difficult topics with a professional that can reassure you and talk to you about what's going on.

You shouldn't sit down to do a bunch of journal prompts or go to therapy only to make zero changes. Actively seek to change your habits and behavior. Try to be more self-aware. Avoid repeating the things that you know have been toxic to yourself and others. Allow yourself to feel and process emotions such as anger, sadness, hurt and guilt; but don't let them control your words and actions. Once you actively start making changes, others will notice it too. It will take time, yes, so don't expect results immediately. Baby steps.

Allow yourself to process your emotions.

Shadow work tends to bring heavy emotions to the surface. Don't try to bury them. Let yourself feel the anger, sadness, hurt and guilt. Process those emotions. Cry them out, write about them, talk about them to your therapist... Just don't bury them. Allowing yourself to feel and process these emotions is important.

Practice some self-care.

Sometimes shadow work is hard, so please don't neglect yourself. Take a nice bubble bath or a warm shower. Drink your favorite tea or coffee. Eat a tasty snack. Watch a movie that makes you feel soft and fuzzy. Do your skincare routine. Find something to do that makes you feel good.

Here are some journal prompts for you to start with.

How does your shadow express itself?

When did your childhood really end? When did you lose that childlike innocence?

What event from the past still have an effect on you today?

Have you ever done something bad to another person? Do you regret it? Why did you do it?

What emotions do you avoid? Why?

When was the last time you felt happy? Describe what happened.

Do you compare yourself to others? In what way? Why?

What do you wish you could change about yourself? Why?

Yule  & The Winter Solstice 101

Summer is over, Winter is in full swing, and Yule is upon us.

Yule, pronounced “yool”, falls on the 21st of December in the Northern Hemisphere, a date that is also known as the Winter Solstice. In the Southern Hemisphere (below the equator), Yule falls on the 21st of June.

The Winter Solstice is the day of the year when the night is longest and the day is shortest. After the solstice, the days begin to grow longer and the nights shorter.

Some Historical & Cultural Stuff:

Yule is the time of the year when the “dark half” of the year ends and the “light half begins”.

Until the 16th century, the winter months were infamous for being times of famine in Europe - most cattle were slaughtered during this time so that they did not need to be fed during the winter. The feed was needed for the mouths of the farmers and the people. This meant that the solstice was a time when meat was plentiful, and is the reason why a lot of the celebrations surrounding this time of year centre around feasting and merriment.

In pre-Christian Scandinavia, there was a feast (named the Feast of Juul) that lasted for twelve (12) days. It celebrated the rebirth of the sun, and from this feast came the custom of burning a Yule log.

In ancient Rome, the Festival of Saturnalia (famously referenced in an episode of The Big Bang Theory) was the pillar of solstice celebrations. It was used to honour the God of agricultural bounty, Saturn and lasted around a week. Saturnalia was characterised by feasting, debauchery and the exchanging of gifts. Does that sound familiar? Well, it should! Many of these customs were absorbed and assimilated into Christian Christmas celebrations upon Emperor Constantine’s conversion to Christianity. This was done to make the conversion less of a shock.

Divination: Pendulums

A Pendulum is an item that is suspended from stationary position so that energy and gravity may cause it to swing. This is used for a variety of reasons from divination, communication, and alignment of beings or spaces. One might use a pendulum board to commune with spirits or deities in a precise manner, but you can also use your hand.

Always make sure to vet before proceeding to ask questions. Vetting is the process of testing the pendulum by asking yes or no questions; one true, and one false. If it answers correctly, it is safe to proceed, if not, I recommend stopping and cleansing your space.

Methodology:

Alignment:

Hold over one’s chakras or a space and allow it to drift, cleansing the negativity until it swings in an even circle. If it sways in a narrow oval form, you need to continue alignment.

Pendulum Boards:

Holding a pendulum over a pendulum board to get specific answers. Most boards have each latter, numbers, and yes, no, and maybe. Most are circular and resemble a spirit board.

Yes/No/Maybe:

Not everyone has a pendulum board, and many use their hand as a surface to sway the pendulum above. Yes is the pendulum swaying left, No is right, and maybe is a circle.

Vetting:

The process of testing and questioning the identity or authenticity of a being you are contacting or communing with by asking true or false questions. If they answer them correctly, its more safe and reliable to talk, if they are falsely answered, I recommend stopping immediately and cleansing your space.

Classifications:

Capsule Pendulum:

A vessel form of a pendulum that can be filled with flora, scrolls, crystals, or liquids to hold more power. The materials of the capsule itself may vary from wood, metal, glass, or plastic.

Chakra Pendulum:

These pendulums usually have a symbol or the corresponding colors and crystals of the Chakras because their purpose is to align them. Many Reiki Healers use Chakra Pendulums for healing by holding it over each chakra until balanced.

Crystal Pendulum:

Gemstone pendulums are my favorites because they feel magickal and crystals themselves are already insanely powerful. This also adds the possibility of choosing a stone that applies with your desired intention.

Egyptian Pendulum:

Egyptian pendulums are used for a variety of purposes and have a particular structure. This figure is established off a sacred amulet dubbed the Oaudj. They can be employed to stabilize rooms, organs, and chakras.

Metal Pendulum:

Metals themselves hold influences and forces from the planet and their foundations, just like crystals and flora. Most of these are swirling downwards with a pointed tip at the bottom center ground.

Wooden Pendulum:

Plants, Trees, and leaves themselves hold abilities and strengths from the world and their structures just like crystals. Trees themselves are sacred and blessed to Druidry, and each genus has its individual significance and importance.

I love this artwork, it belongs to @paperwitchco 🎃

Hi, witches.
Many people made comments similar to this: “cute, but pls remember that if you aren't native american, you shouldn't be calling smoke cleanses smudging! also, you shouldn't be using white sage because it's going extinct and native peoples need white sage in order to use it for their ceremonies !! witchcraft is a beautiful thing but we need to be respectful of other cultures whilst practicing it ”which makes me very sad, because as my first language is not English, for me it does not have a different meaning, so I did not realize that with this post I was disrespecting the native communities, I’m really sorry. Also, because of my allergies, I don't usually burn anything, but if you do, please do your research so as not to damage ecosystems. ♥️

Imbolc Spread

Here is a simple four card spread that you can do to welcome the changing of seasons!

Imbolc marks the halfway point between winter and summer, and is the perfect time to prepare for the coming spring. Read more about Imbolc here.

  1. Past: What can you learn from the past season? Winter can be rough for some people, maybe you were put through the wringer this past season too. What is something you can glean from this experience so that you can learn from this?
  2. Present: What energy do you need to bring into this next season? It’s important to learn from the past and plan for the future, but make sure you are able to stay present and grounded even as the weather is bleak. So, what energy should you bring with you into this changing of seasons that can help you to learn, prepare, and pursue what you need to?
  3. Prepare: Anything you would need to prepare for this coming season? This is the time of the year that farmers and gardeners start to prep their lands and plant their seeds for the spring; what is something you can prepare for that you will need to grow or nurture in the springtime?
  4. Pursue: What is something you need to pursue during this time? This could be a goal that you set earlier this year but you have yet to follow through on, is this something you could be pursuing now, during this halfway between winter and spring?

I haven't done this exact spread yet, I plan to do it the day of Imbolc. I'll share my experience with it if I feel like it's ok to share :)

Let me know if you try out this spread, I would love to know how you feel about it!!!
