pj’s gaze sunk to the floor as he resisted a frown. jeno was worrying him, but he didn’t want to make him feel guilty. what had happened to the guy? not too long ago, he seemed fine—but now, the older seemed like a shadow of his former self. pj wanted to ask a million questions, but, for the time being, he settled for none. jeno would open up to him when he was ready, and pj would be there for him like he always was. as much as he wanted to find some joke to crack, for the moment, he remained silent, intently listening to jeno’s every word.
“that sounds…” his voice trailed off as he tried to gather the words to say, his lips finally failing him as they sunk into a subtle frown. “rough.” wow, great job, pj—that must have been eye opening for him. “i’m sorry, i just—i don’t really understand what’s going on? like… what happened, man?” he hesitated, lifting his gaze to jeno as he tried to get a sense for what was going on. “i mean, do you want to talk about it? because you know i’m here for you, right? no matter what. like… even if you robbed a bank or something. i’d find a way to make it work.”

jeno notices immediately that something is up with pj. he isn’t as talkative or joking as usual, meaning he was more than likely feeling worried for jeno. he definitely didn’t blame him. he was sort of worried for himself, too, but he hated having these moments where his own struggles were too heavily focused on. still, he wasn’t going to get anywhere keeping everything all bottled up. he already confided in siyeon, but this was such a big deal that he needed more than one pillar of support if he was going to keep from crumbling.

“yeah, i know... i know, i’m sorry.” he pauses after his apology, deeply inhaling and letting it out in a sigh as he tries to gather his thoughts. he does manage to crack a very slight grin at the comment about robbing a bank, then he shrugs a bit, lifting his gaze to meet pj’s. “of course i know that. it’s... something really, really heavy. my entire life has changed... or it’s going to. i just... i want to tell you, but not here. come on.” he starts heading for his room, looking over his shoulder to ensure his friend is following. “just in case someone comes home, i’d rather be back in my room... especially when talking about this.”

the younger boy wasn’t sure what he was expecting, but the dejected guy that greeted him at the door wasn’t it. jeno looked like he hadn’t slept in days, and, wait… what was that smell? was that coming from jeno? okay, pj thought, so he hasn’t slept or showered, perfect. pj tried not to let his concern show on his features, but that didn’t stop him from furrowing his brow in disapproval. he had so much that he wanted to ask, just to make sure that his friend was okay. but, unfortunately, something else came out of his mouth. “you look like shit,” he teased, inviting himself into jeno’s house, still clutching the paper bag in his left hand.
pj was no stranger to jeno’s house by this point, and that was made obvious as he made himself at home, sitting down on the first comfortable chair he managed to see. “where have you been, man?” he asked, concern now making its way into his tone. pj wanted to tell jeno that he had been worried sick, or that he wanted to be there for him, but he didn’t want to slip up and make a mistake. jeno would probably only feel worse if he knew how worried pj felt about him. “i would’ve come over a bit earlier, but i kind of figured you would’ve been asleep.” he paused, hoping that he was being subtle in checking up on jeno’s sleep patterns. “were you?”

by this point, with the people that jeno surrounds himself with, he isn’t at all surprised by the teasing comment that comes out of pj’s mouth. still, he narrows his eyes at the younger boy, then lets out a sigh because he can’t even attempt to argue. “yeah, i know... you don’t really have to remind me.” curiously, he eyes the paper bag in his friend’s hand and feels the urge to question him about it, but before he can, he’s being asked his own questions. briefly, he bites down on his lower lip and tries to figure out whether or not he should tell the truth. siyeon knew, and he wanted pj to know eventually, too, but he wasn’t expecting to have to deal with this today.

“it’s a long story... i mean... kind of... not really, i guess. where i’ve been isn’t the long story, because i’ve just been in my room... it’s the why that’s more of a long story.” he deeply inhales and lets it out in another sigh, louder this time as he runs a hand through his hair. “i mean... on and off. i’ve been in bed, but not consistently asleep. i’ve also been playing games... or sometimes just kinda... lying there. i just feel sort of drained and like a break from all of this.” as he says the last word, he vaguely motions around as if pj would understand what he was referring to.

eric’s been trying not to think about it. that day at jeno’s when they figured it out had been one of the scariest days in eric’s life, and he’d been pretty on edge since. he’d been trying not to show it though, putting on a happy, bright, unbothered exterior so that know one knew he was constantly terrified of this situation going south. he’s scared that jeno blames him for ruining his perception of his family, and probably eventually the reality of his family, since eric assumes it’ll eventually come out and he’ll have been the catalyst to his family falling apart.
but, he’s got to pretend everything is okay for his own mental stability right now - he can’t let his worries take over, especially not this weekend when he’s got so many people to spend time with. two of those people being jeno and a long-time friend of his, siyeon. eric has heard a lot about her, and knows she means a great deal to jeno. so, he has to make a good impression.
only problem is he’d just fallen in the river with chaewon and had literally only minutes ago waded out and parted ways with her, sending her off with his soaked plaid shirt to cover her white dress. he’d left her with other friends, knowing he needed to get to this picnic with jeno and siyeon, even if he was soaked and shivering. luckily it’s sunny, so he’s rapidly drying off as he walks across the grass, heading for the couple he can see on a picnic blanket not far away. “jeno!” he calls out as he gets close enough, finally stopped beside the blanket and giving a slightly embarrassed smile. “uh… sorry about… this,” he gestures at his soaked self. “i fell in the river.”
honestly, there’s a million ways her mind conjured up that this could go, but this was never one of them. really, could anyone have expected this? at the very least, it’s an interesting story to tell in the future of their first meeting, but in the heat of the moment, she’s not thinking of that. she’s too busy tripping over her own feet so stand up and tug him closer to their picnic blanket.
“oh my god, you must be freezing, come here. it’s a good thing I was embarrassingly over-prepared.” ( there’s no shame in bringing an extra blanket to a picnic, right? or enough food to feed them four times over? or packing three different types of drink in case he didn’t like the first two options? right? ) she’s tugging the blanket from her spare bag in seconds, unfolding it and frowning at the fact that, unlike a towel which would have been so much better to pack had she (  by some miracle ) predicted this, it probably won’t be too absorbent. that being said, the summer sun is still beating down so hopefully it won’t be too long until he dries off naturally, anyway — enough to enjoy the rest of the day, at least. unless you’re having a romantic kiss under the rain, being soaked to the bone isn’t really a happy or comfortable experience. hurriedly, she wraps it around his shoulders to keep him warm.
what she should be asking is how this happened, or why, but it doesn’t really seem important. her curiosity can get the better of her later when she’s stopped worrying that he’s going to catch a cold or worse. “jen…” she starts quietly, turning back to her best friend with soft eyes — the kind of gaze only he and her grandma typically get, one that’s full of concern and fondness. it doesn’t last long, though, because rather than make things too serious, she cops out into her usual playful snark. “I hate to say it, but looking at you right now,” she turns to eric, “and what I know about you,” then jeno, “you’re definitely related.”

jeno is speechless as soon as eric arrives, staring at him with wide eyes and not sure what to do about it. that could have a lot to do with the fact that he isn’t sure what to do about most tricky situations these days. decision-making isn’t effortless for him because he feels like the wheels in his brain are trying to turn but something’s jamming them. fortunately, siyeon springs into action and pulls out a blanket to wrap around him. it all feels so weird and silly, but he isn’t entirely sure what he expected. nothing involving him seemed to be conventional, and even less so when eric is thrown into the mix, too.

he doesn’t become aware that he hasn’t actually said anything until siyeon quietly begins speaking to him, and he turns to look at her before clearing his throat. just as he accepts that he’s going to have to make some sort of attempt, siyeon is playfully commenting on the situation which leaves jeno with a small, albeit somewhat forced, smile. “yeah...” he wants to kick himself for not saying more. he wants to, he just can’t figure out what. “so... i guess i don’t need to do the whole introduction thing since you both know a lot about each other already, but i’ll humor the situation... siyeon, this is my... my brother, eric... and eric, this is my—” he immediately stops, wondering why he had to go and do this whole title thing. now what was he supposed to say?

“—friend... siyeon. anyway, i’m hungry, let’s not make this too weird. i wanna know what all’s in this basket.” he pauses, considering the fact that maybe he should ask, “oh, how did you fall in the river, anyway?”

jeno is one of pj’s oldest friends. this in itself says a lot about pj’s track record for long-term friendships, given that they only met four years ago. now that most of pj’s family has settled in one place, however, a sense of normalcy has returned to his life. he no longer feels like each of his friendships could be jeopardized at any moment, and, as such, he’s determined to keep as many friendships as possible, especially when the friend in question means as much to him as jeno.
given how much pj cares about their friendship, it’s only natural that he’d notice that jeno hasn’t been acting himself. pj hasn’t seen the older in days, and, although they’ve texted in the meantime, he still feels like he should reach out to ensure that his friend is okay. this is what friends are for, he thinks to himself, clutching a brown paper bag in one hand as he approaches jeno’s doorstep. he draws in a deep breath, silently hoping that his friend is home. where else would he be? he better be home if he isn’t hanging out with me, he thinks, pushing aside whatever worry he had. pj prepares himself to welcome his friend (or his friend’s mother) with a bright grin as he knocks loudly on the door several times. “hello?!”

things haven’t been good. as a matter of fact, they’ve been awful. for a while, he couldn’t even motivate himself to get out of bed. he would force himself to sleep when he wasn’t tired, or he would play video games until his eyes were burning from lack of sleep. there was nothing healthy about the way that jeno was going about things, barely leaving his room, even when he was hungry since he wasn’t eating regularly. then, of course, there was the problem with his lack of showering. honestly, he was a mess and there was no denying it. he’d gotten a little better since those first several days, siyeon visiting and helping him recover slightly, but he was still off.

guilt was eating him alive and he couldn’t figure out what to do or what to say... or when to say it. given that jeni was currently over at a friend’s house and jeno’s mom was at work, he decided it was a good time to stop being a hermit and sneak to the kitchen for a snack. as he’s making his way there, however, he’s caught off guard by a banging on the door accompanied by a familiar voice. it startles him, making him jump, though once he realizes what’s happening he makes his way over to let his friend in, probably looking like a sight for sore eyes. “hi.”

the power of three.

to say siyeon’s nervous would be an understatement. just from the weight of her picnic basket alone it’s plain to see she’d stress baked enough to feed the entire park, but if that doesn’t give it away, the way her fingers dance across her knees should. they’re pulled up against her chest, her back turned to jeno to look across the crowd. the gentle hum of life around her is muffled by her thoughts— would he like her? did she dress nicely enough? would he like what she’d prepared for them to eat? she hums to herself, tucking a loose strand of her behind her ear.
there shouldn’t be anything to worry about. jeno will have put in a good word, if not because he’s her best friend, then because jeno is too nice not to. but she knows the impression she gives off, knows what she thinks of herself. if eric is anything like jeno, maybe he won’t mind that her usual clothes are blindingly bright or that her words are often rather firm and brash, but she doesn’t know that yet. she just knows that until he arrives, she’s going to continue wiggling her feet and tapping her fingertips against her knees. hopefully, it won’t take long.

normally, jeno would be fixated on siyeon enough to notice how nervous she seemed. he was usually pretty good at reading her, but his mind was too preoccupied for him to entirely notice. truthfully, he’d been out of it ever since he found out about eric. carrying around such a huge and horrible secret weighed him down, making him a hundred times heavier than usual. he wasn’t constantly smiling or making jokes, he was far away, lost inside of his own mind. he agreed to do this because he wanted to start making an effort at strengthening his relationship with eric now that he knows he’s his brother, plus it was important to siyeon...

but he couldn’t help but feel there were more important things for him to be doing. with every day that passed by without him telling his mother the truth, or at least confronting his dad, he felt worse. he almost felt like an accessory to the crime, given he is withholding the information. it felt wrong... dirty... but he doesn’t want to focus on that. he wants to have a good day, he just wishes that it wasn’t so hard. finally, he turns to look at siyeon, trying his best to seem in good spirits. “he’ll be here. maybe he got lost in the crowd.”

life as we know it.

♫ starter for @rkxric!

it was nice having a friend other than the girl that he was hopelessly in love with. the more time he spend with eric, the closer they seemed to become. once upon a time, having someone over at his house instead of relaxing by himself was the most unappealing idea ever. of course, that changed when siyeon came back along, but he thought she was the sole exception. now, however, he always finds himself looking forward to eric’s visits. it’s not the first time that he’s been over at jeno’s, and he definitely didn’t want it to be the last, either.

they’d been casually hanging out in his room, talking about anything that popped into their brains and jeno showing eric a few things on various video games. but, eventually jeno was hungry, and even though he wasn’t known for his cooking skills, he still suggested that they go find something to put in their stomachs.

as they’re making their way from the room to the kitchen, jeno accidentally knocks into a table in the hallway that had various pictures placed on top. one of the picture frames plummets to the floor before he can even begin to react. “oh, shit. sorry. be careful... my mom is gonna kill me.” he tries to be cautious as he kneels down to assess the mess he’s made, eyeing all of the shattered glass shards. “i should probably get a broom, huh?”

“Excuse me!” The dancer comes running up to the person with a warm smile. “Hi there! Are you a fan of K-pop? Check out all the latest info from Royal Entertainment here! If you’re a fan of LUXE or DE:CODE, there’s lots of information here, including any shows they might have coming up.” She hands them the flyer as she explains. If you’re not, feel free to pass the flyer on to a friend who might be curious in learning about Royal! Have a good day!” She beams happily, bowing before excusing herself and letting them go on ahead.

it was happening again, but by this point he didn’t mind. well, not too much anyway. it wasn’t possible for him to have the ability to function like a normal person in public just because a handful of people hand him flyers on the street, but it’s not like they ever intend to stick around and chat so he’s normally fine. this time, just like every other time, jeno politely smiles and accepts the flyer, despite the fact that he isn’t overly enthused or interested about any of the events that they typically advertise. “oh, cool. thanks for this. i can give it to my sister for sure, i think she’d like to know this stuff. i hope that you have a good day, too.”

sweet nothings.

she doesn’t know what it is about tonight, if it’s the joy of a new game or growing a year older, but jeno softly laughs at almost everything she says and does and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to brush off the butterflies in her stomach and the pink to her cheeks. she’s called him a ‘nerd’ a million times, seen him smile in response just as many, but today it feels different for some reason — fonder, sweeter. perhaps it’s their proximity, or the fact that every so often she has to fight to keep her eyes open. it doesn’t help when he turns to face her, those same sparkles now in full view and tip of his nose just begging to be kissed. but he’s talking before she can succumb and she’s grateful, even if he does tell her ( playfully ) to shut up. “no, you,” is her weak-willed reply, but it comes with another inch closer so she doesn’t think it’ll be too much of a surprise that she didn’t put up a fight. “I bet they do. they literally raised you, jen. anyway, whether you care or not, I am here, you’re right. here to bother you and feed you birthday cake.” and give you birthday kisses and try to keep all my squealing and/or crying internal so you don’t freak out as much as I am right now— or maybe just the cake.
“mhmm… sorry, what was that? I wasn’t listening, do you think you could say it another nineteen times for me?” she quips back, carefully pushing back stray hairs that can’t seem to stop falling into her eye line. it’s hard to watch the screen, jeno and the inside of her eyelids from time to time with hair in the way. alas, she misses his glance at her again — misses that same glimmer in his eyes and soft grin on his lips. maybe it’s for the best, though; whilst she’s this tired, she’ll only end up thinking there’s something written between the lines that isn’t actually there. “I suppose they must really love making these remasters of old games. sure, they’ve got to work super hard on the graphics, but they don’t need to write a brand new story or make a bunch of new characters. plus you know people are going to buy it because the original sold so well. it kind of freaks me out sometimes when you play those hyper-realistic games, though… I think I’m too used to animal crossing.”

each time he looks at her and they have this moment where their gazes meet, he feels like he’s genuinely melting. he wishes he could say that it was all pleasant and soft, but he also gets super warm and feels his face and ears heat up which is a clear indicator that he’s more than likely blushing like crazy which is the dumbest thing ever. the last thing he wants is for her to notice and realize that it’s because of the way she causes his thoughts to become all jumbled and his heart to beat so fast he’s almost sure it can’t be healthy. luckily for him, though, all she really responds with is the weakest counter in the universe and all jeno can do is fondly laugh. “um... no, siyeon. you.” it’s childish and even dumber than his stupid blushing, but he doesn’t care because it’s just another part of their dynamic and he would take their weak, silly “arguments” over anything else in the entire world. he takes notice of the way she inches even closer, which causes him to lean further against her, taking his eyes off the screen to watch her for the nth time. he wants to tell her how pretty she looks right now, but he holds his tongue.

“i mean... they care a normal amount, but no one was going out of their way for me or anything. well, no one other than you. just accept that you’re superior so we can move on from this feeling fest, please.” his response is entirely playful and dramatic, which is obvious by the huge and teasing grin playing at his lips.

ha ha, you’re so hilarious.” his sentence dripping with sarcasm, yet oddly enough, he truly does find siyeon very funny. that’s likely given away by the small smile that he can’t entirely seem to fight back. fortunately, siyeon seems kind of distracted and tired and he has a lot of faith that she isn’t taking notice of too many of his facial expressions. even though she is still awake enough to look at the screen and attempt making conversation about games with him, he’d bet everything that she would be asleep within the next twenty minutes. but, she’s trying to be good company and spend time with him on his birthday regardless, which makes him love her even more (which he had no idea was possible). “yeah, no kidding. sometimes, games are re-released without much even changing. i can’t even tell you how many times skyrim or gta 5 have been released, just on different consoles or as vr or whatever else. anyway, i don’t know why you’d say it freaks you out. don’t you think it’s cool? i think it’s cool. animal crossing is too, though, so that’s valid.”

♠ Flyer 6 ♠

The stack of flyers that had once overtaken his arms was now dwindled down to only a few and it had been a lot of work for the teenager. He had traveled more than he usually did during a day and had done more work than he usually did at school. It was all the price one pays for achieving their dreams, right?
Beomgyu emerged from the subway station and he immediately began looking around for a location to settle and hand out the few remaining trc flyers he had. As he walked the streets he would hand out flyers, smiling and grinning as he did. It wasn’t long before the teenager spotted another unlucky person. ❝ Excuse me, hyung. Would you be interested in trc? ❞ He handed the other a flyer and grinned brightly.

once again, jeno seemed to become a target for people handing out flyers. he isn’t sure how he ends up receiving multiple at a time every so often, but at least it’s forced him to become slightly better with handling social situations that he isn’t expecting. plus, it’s nice that the ones typically handing them out seem to want to get it done as fast as possible and don’t talk to him for too long. the least he could do is make this process easier for them since it probably wasn’t the most entertaining task in the world.

he offered the boy a smile and politely accepted the flyer, keeping to himself that he has absolutely zero interest in any of the entertainment companies, much less a specific one. he doesn’t intend on ever working for any of them and he barely listens to music from their groups, either. but it was okay. he could keep that bit to himself. “yeah, for sure. thanks.”

  • ━ ♡ ┊ kt flyer for: @rkjeno
when the first couple flyers had been handed out the nerves had started to falter and she felt a little more comfortable, still nervous but it wasn’t as bad as it had been before starting. it was also rather comfortable to be in the crowd, no one knew her but maybe one day they would know who she was and remember that they got a flyer from her.
“excuse me,” she stopped in front of a male, a small smile curving her lips as she shyly handed out a flyer in his direction, “if you have a moment would you please accept this?” she lifts her brows and glances up at him, “it has important dates and those kinds of things from kt entertainment,” she nods slowly as she speaks and waits for him to accept the flyer, “thank you so much,” she says before hurrying off.

jeno is on his way home when he ends up being randomly stopped by a girl he didn’t recognize. if this happened just over a year ago, he probably would have hoped that the ground would swallow him whole or literally melted into a puddle on the spot, but now he was able to react slightly more calm than that. he still awkwardly cleared his throat and shoved his hands into the front pocket of his hoodie, but he was able to make eye contact for a few seconds here and there, which was progress enough for him.

once he realized that she was just one of those people that wanted to give him a flyer, he felt even more at ease. this was something that happened to him a lot, unfortunately for him, but he was glad it was giving him experience with unexpected encounters. “yeah, sure. kt entertainment... that’s cool. it’s, uh... no problem.. have a nice day...” the sheet was probably going to find its way into the trash later that night, or placed on a counter where it was forgotten about until his mother or sister takes it or recycles it, but he didn’t see the harm in being polite.

the walk from the station to jeno’s house is difficult - there’s so many fancy cafes and little cake shops and things to temp eric when the universe knows he simply can’t afford any luxuries like cakes or fancy cafe drinks. he can’t drink coffee other than starbucks thanks to his employee status getting him a hefty discount. one day maybe he’ll have enough to go to a nice cafe once a fortnight, or if he’s really lucky, one a week!
eventually, though, he reaches jeno’s place, after a couple wrong turns and moments of slight panic, thinking he’s gotten himself horribly lost, only to simply be facing the wrong direction. it’s the nerves, he presumes, since he’s usually pretty good at figuring out how to get places. this is his first time going to jeno’s house, and he’s not sure what to expect.
eric and jeno met simply because people kept pointing out how alike they look. someone knew eric from tiktok, then watched one of jeno’s streams and pointed it out, which prompted even more attention to be drawn to their likeness, and eventually they decided they should at least talk to each other - maybe if they looked alike their personalities might match up well as well, and they did. they’d formed a fast friendship, and eric felt as though he’d known jeno for years now.
yet still, after a long time of being friends, this is only his first time being invited to jeno’s house. there’s a chance the other members of his family could be there, and eric wants to make a good impression. so, when he finds himself at right outside, having had to take a moment to take in how fancy it seemed, he pulls out his phone to check his reflection, trying to fix his hair before he pushes the buzzer and waits for an answer.

friends. it was kind of a strange concept to jeno. especially real friends. sure, he had those guys that he used to hang out with that all ended up being total dickheads so he yelled at them and has never seen them again since... so yeah, not the best track record when it comes to forming solid relationships. jeno is still surprised that he felt so comfortable and at ease around siyeon to the point they could become as close as they have, but he still wonders if that has something to do with the fact that he knew her when he was young, before all of the trauma and anxieties that joined him during his school years.

having a new friend over at his home was such a foreign concept. his mom and jeni were probably going to tease him for it later, but it was nothing he wasn’t used to by now. they take every chance they get to give him a hard time it seems, so he’s gotten to the point where he just rolls his eyes and says ‘yeah, yeah, yeah’ before retreating into his room for the remainder of the night.

this new friend was one that he met online, and they’d gotten to know each other over time but they’d never met in person before. they had a lot of things in common, including their appearance, strangely enough, so he just felt like this could be someone else he could attempt being close to. god knows he needed to be more social and to feel like he had more than one person to confide in these days.

jeno was both excited and anxious; he was terrified of eric finding out how awkward and strange he was and how he was much less easygoing in person and that he’d scare him away, so he had to try hard to be... chill. though it was obvious that might not work out too well the second he hears the doorbell and nearly jumps out of his skin. he barely even has time to process it before he’s hopping up and running to get the door himself, opening it slightly disheveled and recovering from the shoe he just nearly tripped over. “hi.”
