Not just kinda, pretty dang cool
Honestly in terms of sets? Very little of the Prequels were CGI. Lucas actively attempted to cultivate the idea that he used CGI for everything because he wanted to be perceived as cutting edge. Mustufar? That’s an actual miniature set. The poured jello over the top of neon lights to make the lava. Naboo? Also used miniatures; they used salt instead of water to make the water falls look right at that scale.
Okay, are we all just gonna ignore that set designers had to painstakingly cut, paint, and arrange 500,000 q-tips?!?

Psssst the set designer wouldn’t have assorted all those q-tips. The set designer came up with all the dimensions of how big that q-tip stadium needed to be, and made the blueprints.
The real creator would have been fabricators, set dressers, or a crying art production assistant who has been painting q-tips for two weeks straight and just really wants to go home.

this morning NASA abandoned their mars rover Opportunity (aka Oppy) because it (she) got hit by a storm on Mars and it knocked her camera and wheels out and her last words to the team were “my battery is low and it is getting cold”. I know she’s a machine but I’m devastated. Oppy is the one who discovered water on Mars. RIP oppy ily space baby

they didn’t abandon her!! they tried eight months to reach her!!!! as their last farewell to her yesterday they played her “I’ll be seeing you” by Billie Holiday:

They love her so much and they tried so hard!!!

This is what’s great about NASA and it’s what’s great about people. These are world-class engineers. When they sent a rover to another planet they could have easily looked at it as just another scientific tool. But people don’t do that. We can and will get emotionally attached to the most inanimate of objects. We can and will anthropomorphize anything. And frankly Opportunity’s camera mast looks like a little face with eyes and everything, so why not?
So they started calling it her.
They nicknamed her Oppy.
They told her to take a selfie not long ago.
After 15 years of Oppy flipping the double bird to her original 90 day life expectancy, when a planet-spanning dust storm finally knocked her out and she stopped responding to the engineer’s wake-up messages, they started playing music for her.
And after 8 months and almost 1000 unanswered wake-up messages, when it was finally clear that Oppy was never going to wake up, the last thing these world-class NASA engineers did for their little rover on another planet

Michael Collins is a HILARIOUS SPACE ANGEL and I will shout this from the rooftops every time this post comes up on my dash. He showed up at my school in Boston for an event and the first thing he said was “I just learned what the state bird of Massachusetts is. It’s the upraised middle finger.” He followed up with “Buzz and Neil were bickering like an old married couple the whole time. It was nice to get some peace and quiet while they were on the surface. Forget being the farthest from all humanity, I just wanted to be the farthest from those two.”

I discovered this podcast at the beginning of high school, and let me tell you, it rewired my synapses.
Not only was it my first experience with positive LGBT representation, it was the show I clung to when everything else went to shit. Whatever was going on in my life, I knew I had this show in my corner, making me laugh, making me cry, making me feel okay about my place in the universe.
I owe the creators of this podcast more than I could express.
"the lights over the Arby's" is such an intrinsically queer piece of writing that it hits me *hard* every time.
It's always the end of episode 2 for me:
Sorry, listeners. Not sure what happened in that earlier section of the broadcast – as in I actually don’t remember what happened. Tried to play back the tapes, but they’re all blank, and smell faintly of vanilla. The Glow Cloud, meanwhile, has moved on. It is now just a glowing spot in the distance, humming east to destinations unknown. We may never fully understand, or understand at all what it was and why it dumped a lot of dead animals on our community. But, and I’m going to get a little personal here, that’s the essence of life, isn’t it? Sometimes you go through things that seem huge at the time, like a mysterious glowing cloud devouring your entire community. While they’re happening they feel like the only thing that matters, and you can hardly imagine that there’s a world out there that might have anything else going on. And then the Glow Cloud moves on. And you move on. And the event is behind you. And you may find that, as time passes, you remember it less and less. Or absolutely not at all, in my case. And you are left with nothing but a powerful wonder at the fleeting nature of even the most important things in life – and the faint but pretty smell of vanilla.
