Rufus was usually keen on getting gifts that best suited his loved ones. The man, after all, seemed to hold all the money in the world. To buy an expensive gift was nothing but a penny dropped into a vast well. Because of this, he knew each one had to have a meaning behind it. He desired it so.

A medium size box was placed under the tree for Ambrosia. A silver bow is centered at the top. Rufus had gone to great lengths to figure out the exact type of materials that settled inside it. Among the paper sheets was a hat. A particular hat that bore the same size, shape, and materials that she had worn on that day they trod the beach.

It was one of the fonder moments of their courting. When everything she did seized his attention. His handwriting was on the card that was nestled between ribbons: Perhaps we should revisit. This is for our next trip.

Nestled at the foot of the Christmas tree, the gift lay in wait. A hidden treasure Ambrosia discovered only after the last echo of footsteps had faded, once the calm had returned.

She had spent the eve exchanging polite smiles, partaking in breezy banter and shaking hands. With every toast and every speech, as boring as they were, she had raised her glass and found the appropriate words, acting with the exemplariness expected of her stature. Her whole life was scripted by contracts, alliances, and rivalries, but was she truly fooled by that ? Sooner or later, these smiling faces would be replaced by others. Some might return for several years, but eventually, they were destined to vanish. The majority of people were disposable, as she had been taught from the earliest of ages. A lesson so ingrained that she had convinced herself not risk the attachment to any other.

In the soft glow of ambient Christmas lights, the gift was a surprise in itself. Moments lingered as she observed the box and its sophisticated satin bow, but what caught her eye was the unmistakable handwriting on the card. The letters of her name calligraphed with a precision and elegance she knew well and recognized at the first sight. She let her fingers ran over the smooth surface, mixing emotions swirling in her mind. Should she, even for a fleeting moment, consider turning away from the present ? A stronger heartbeat and a more compelling temptation answered her internal query.

She held her breath, her fingers untying the bow and unwrapping the layers of silk paper with a controlled eagerness. Her eyes widened as she uncovered a hat, carefully nestled within. The original had been tossed into the unruly embrace of ocean foam long ago, yet Rufus managed to find an identical replica in every aspect. It was not a simple hat but a treasure trove of memories, a fragile relic she handled with the utmost care. She gently placed the hat on her head and gave it the right tilt, mimicking the exact same gesture Rufus had done long ago.

As her reflection flickered in the mirror above the fireplace, a soft smile adorned her face, the softest of this evening. Memories flooded back, delicate and tangible; memories of shared laughter, profound conversations on moonlit shores, and whispered confidences lingering until the first light of dawn. As far back as she could remember, whether near or far, Rufus had always been in her life’s tableau. But she was a Van der Wald, she knew this wasn’t what was expected of her. He, too, belonged to the faces that were not supposed to stay in her life. Like every time she thought of him, she looked at the stars high in the sky, with the unsettling thought that he, too, was thinking of her and remembering all those evenings they spent stargazing together. She remembered the way he seemed to know the name of every star, and how she had listened, finding interest in every constellation when it was with him.

Cruel was the lesson of realizing that the one with whom she had shared the most memories would be destined to become nothing more than a memory himself.

The icy night had enveloped the mansion of its silence, and one by one, the lights in other rooms had gone out. Snow fell in lazy swirls, cloaking the surroundings in a pristine veil. She read and reread his words to the point of knowing every detail of his letters. She remembered cocktails in large pineapples adorned with tiny paper parasols, she recalled the memorable arm-wrestling match where Rufus had won the hat.. Had she ever realized until then how much she missed him ? Suddenly she felt the visceral need to hear him, to have him talk about anything, to hear the sound of his voice.

Soon, the first light of dawn would appear, a new day with new faces, again and again. In these undecided hours, she yielded to the decision to seize her phone. Each beep resonated like a clarion call slicing through the profound silence. In this ever-shifting universe, a question lingered : could it be possible that some faces were destined to carve such an enduring mark ?   With a delicate and hushed voice, the same that once whispered him confidences, she uttered a solitary word, echoing in the silent expanse. “Perhaps..

What happened ?

She still didn’t know. It was still too early, her consciousness was barely emerging from the haze she had plunged into after the accident. As she slowly came back to herself, she felt like a traveler venturing into an unfamiliar land. At first, sensations were blurred, a patchword of shadows and fleeting emotions. They were both heightened and muted, a dull ache pulsed through her body, as if she was reawakening from a long journey. The world around her seemed distant, muffled, as if she was trying to observe it through a thick veil.

When Rikelus left the room, Ambrosia gravitated towards the wardrobe. As she inspected the array of clothes, the new version of herself felt perplexed, grappling with the decision of what to wear. Her fingers delicately brushed over the fabrics, attempting to rekindle a connection to her past self. Despite the multitude of options, Ambrosia remained uncertain about which attire would authentically reflect her essence.

"My eyes are blue," was the only response that crossed Ambrosia’s lips. It was the only meager certainty she had in this sterile new universe, and perhaps it was better for her to remain focused on that idea rather than thinking about the accident’s victims.

The Science and Discovery Festival was in full swing, a carefully crafted spectacle orchestrated each year by the ShinRa to reinforce their iron grip over the populace and quell any dissent regarding the supposed safety of the Mako. Ambrosia Van der Wald was there, surveying the spectacle with a critical eye. She had only come to this event as a favor to her father who wanted her to network with the ShinRa, and maybe to find some details about Rufus’ business trip.

She passed a group of children playing with balloons and toys emblazoned with the ShinRa logo, but she didn’t give them a second glance. It was only when she came upon a display of butterflies, locked away behind a glass cage, that she stopped in her tracks.

“Sis’ ! Siiiisss !! Look ! Look how beautiful it is !” Ambrosia had almost blinded her sister with excitement at having finally caught a butterfly herself. In the little palm of her hand was a butterfly with delicate blue wings. “Can we adopt it ?”

She was still lost in her memories when a young scientist approached her, probably attempting to strike up a conversation about the wonders of the Mako. But Ambrosia cut her off with a wave of her hand. “Don’t waste my time with your sales pitch. I don’t believe in the future of Mako energy…” she drawled, her voice dripping with condescension, her eyes fixed on the emerald shimmering wings of the trapped creatures. “How could you imprison something so beautiful ?”

Finally Ambrosia raised her clear eyes to the woman in front of her and extended her hand. “I am Ambrosia Van der Wald. I don’t have time for propaganda, but I am interested in what you have to offer. Show me your most innovative technology, and by that I don’t mean creepy holograms, and perhaps we can do business..”

Ambrosia shot a disapproving glance at Isrieal, making no effort to conceal the disgust that the young woman’s flirtatious attitude inspired her. She then turned her attention to the Professor. “What is the issue with the results ? Have you found any illicit substances in her blood ?” She cast another, more severe look at Isrieal this time.

Every fragment of information the man shared was carefully stashed away in the corners of her mind, like puzzle pieces she scrutinized from every possible angle, struggling to figure out how they fit together, all while lacking any inkling of the final picture.

Silently, she observed the assistant as he went about the task of extracting samples from Isrieal, his actions driven by a mechanical obedience, devoid of curiosity, a choice that might serve his sanity and safety well.

𝐒𝐄𝐓𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐏𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐀𝐋.

basically i got thinking abt like. you know when you watch a movie, or read a book, and characters go into a room or they do a particular thing together, and you just KNOW it’s building up to something, and it could be literally anything, from a kiss to a murder, but SOMETHING will DEFINITELY happen??? yeah. this is a love-letter to those glorious scenes! i hope you all enjoy!

[  ROAD  TRIP  ]:     the sender and receiver embark on a road trip together; the purpose could be anything at all, but what’s important is that the journey lasts at least several hours. additionally, the sender and receiver are the only people in the car!

[  BARED  SOULS  ]:     the sender and receiver spontaneously go skinny dipping together in the middle of the night while visiting an isolated lake. go wild! maybe the sender finds the receiver already skinny dipping, maybe it’s the other way round, who knows! you do! maybe.

[  NIGHT-TIME  STROLLS  ]:    the sender decides to walk the receiver home from an event late one night. and it’s very late; so late that they might as well be the only people left in the world. it’s just them and the quiet night sky, and conversations of all kinds are easy to come by.

[  TOP OF THE WORLD  ]:     one of the muses finds the other on the roof-top in the middle of the night. neither of them want to sleep, and so they sit together for the remainder of the night until the sun comes up, content to sit and talk and exist with each other.

[  STEPPING  BACK  ]:      while they’re both attending a particularly lively and crowded party, both muses, craving a moment of peace and fresh air, accidentally go to the same balcony. unwilling to leave, they sit together, and begin to talk as the party spins on behind their backs.

[  NO  VACANCIES  ]:     both characters are in a position where they must share a hotel room together; not so bad, until they realize the only room left has one bed and no sofa in it. paired with a carpet that not even a worst enemy would be subjected to, the two must share the bed.

[  WRONG  ROOM  ]:     after a long day, and a hotel with many vacancies, the two muses part ways to go to bed. only, one of them ends up waking in the middle of the night, and shows up at the other’s doorstep, knocking and asking to come in, for reasons unknown to the other muse.

[  NIGHT-INGALE  ]:     after being badly beaten, one muse shows up on the other muse’s doorstep, pleading for help. the other obliges, brings them in and gently cleans their wounds, bandaging them up, helping them as much as they can while quiet confessions and gentle pleas happen. basically, angst and emotion and hurt and comfort, and it’s DELICIOUS–

[  VISITING  HOURS  ]:     upon waking in a hospital bed, one of the muses turns their head, and finds the other sleeping in an uncomfortable chair by their bedside.

In the dimly-lit room, she struggled with the bunch of keys, her hands trembling like leaves in a chilling breeze. The fear etched on her face was unmistakable as she tried to find the right key, but her fingers betrayed her, shaking uncontrollably.

The Lover

Love has brought you to this place, and it will not let you leave. fear clutches you, constricts you, and it will have you killed– and yet, it is still no match for the bounty of your heart. you will try as hard as you can to protect the object of your affections. evil is nothing in the face of your warmth. even if you are successful in protecting your lover, that does not guarantee your own survival. your heart has doomed you, but what greater death is there than dying for love?

“Do you want company?”

Avatar

It was weighing on her, the downward spiral ShinRa had become lately. Not just ShinRa. She had watched Jenova slolwly drive the Professor into a stranger madness. The labs were a disaster of moral conflicts, the experiments were out of contol and no matter how many screaming matches she had with him she knew that nothing would stop this discord.

Isrieal was sitting in the skyview lobby, in a booth near the back where the mako danced outside the winds beside her. Her hair touseled, her face buried in her hands as she draws in a deep breath to calm herself. She draws her fingers down her face as she lets out an audible sigh and gazes out the window beside her. Eyes wide and dancing with that pale green glow reflecting from the night sky.

How much longer could she put up with this? She didn't even know. There were no traces of harm upon her fast healing skin, but there was a pink tinge of blood in the white strands near her face. She was transfixed by that glow out there as she bites upon the tips of her nails resting against her lower lip.

"Do you want company?"

She freezes when she hears those words, catching the reflection of her sister beside her in the glass panes. It takes her a long moment to respond but she turns to look in her direction with a few nods of her head. "Yeah, sure.." She curls up in her seat while looking down.

It was already late, as often was the case when she ventured there. Ambrosia hadn’t expected to encounter anyone, so she was surprised to see her sister’s silhouette.

Her posture didn’t bode well; Isrieal stood there, lost in thought. Ambrosia approached cautiously, as one would approach a wounded animal. Perhaps because that was sometimes how she felt about her sister, a fragile yet dangerous creature impossible to fully tame. Except, maybe, for that old lunatic, Hojo… Isrieal seemed blindly devoted to him, something Ambrosia could understand but refused to accept.

My friend, you are hella aesthetic. Everything about you is thoughtful and intentional, from the way you present yourself to the way you've constructed your space. You'd probably make the most impressive cakes. You have a few close relationships that you've poured yourself into, and you both value the little every-day moments you have together. That said, sometimes you get a bit lost in the details and forget to take a holistic look at your life. Who have you left behind? Are you happy, or do you just look it? Remember to have an honest check-in with yourself sometimes.
