This is so heartbreaking.

I've seen a lot of fics disappear from my bookmarks, some 10+ years old, because they were added to an unrevealed collection. It makes me wonder if people realize what your fic being added to a collection actually means and if the authors approved it automatically without realizing what would happen.

If someone adds your fic to their collection, they can hide it! They can mark the collection as unrevealed and your fic will be unreadable to anyone other than them! If you're writing works for a surprise event, like a Secret Santa, this is really nice.

But if you're just writing and someone adds your fic to a collection for their own personal use and marks it as unrevealed, that. . . really sucks.

I bookmarked this fic in 2017, almost 5 years ago. Knowing me, the fic itself was probably at least a couple years old at the time I bookmarked it.

This is a 5+ year old fic that is completely inaccessible now because it was added to a collection that, as far as I can tell, is literally just for the collection owner's own reference. There's almost 30 fics in the collection, all of them unrevealed.

Please don't blindly accept collection requests and if your works ARE in a collection, make sure that they aren't being hidden without your knowledge or consent.

Are you able to remove a work from collection after you allow it or is it just a story that's just fucked?

Yes, you can remove your works! From the faq:

I'm not sure if you get an alert if your fic is marked as unrevealed though, so keep an eye on the collections that your works are part of.

There's also an option in your preferences to accept collection invitations automatically. I would highly recommend making sure that that option is not selected.

Honestly you people need to start thinking about fanfiction like a restaurant.

You do not have to order the salmon if you don't like salmon.

If I order the salmon, I am not forcing you to eat the salmon. Nor are you obligated to order it just because I am.

If we are going with the intention of sharing food, that's okay! I happen to like steak too. I don't need to order the salmon. I'm capable of going to the restaurant and not ordering the salmon. We can order the steak.

There is a whole menu of things you can have. The salmon is just an option. We can even find a restaurant that doesn't serve salmon at all.

Yes, I know some people are allergic to salmon. But I'm not going up to them and force-feeding it to them. The only way my salmon can hurt them is if they come to our table and take the salmon.

The only way you'll expose yourself to my salmon and the unpleasantness of eating it is if I tell you my dish has salmon in it and you insist on having a bite anyway.

You're midway through your meal and realize it has salmon in it? Okay. Lets send it back and order something else. Maybe you didn't see it in the ingredients list. Or maybe the chef didn't put it down.

Its really that simple.

I know someone so allergic to fish it can cause her trouble to be near it when it’s cooking. It’s very sucky for her.

And yes, if you are deathly allergic to salmon, so allergic you can’t be in the same building with it, that will make some restaurants impossible for you to visit. But that does not mean a restaurant has to stop serving salmon for your sake. Many people enjoy salmon. Many consider it healthy and important to include in their diet.

There are also people who consider salmon sacred. Who will not support a place that serves salmon on principle. They are offended that you eat it. And that’s okay too. You can be offended, but you can’t rip the salmon out of their mouths.

I get that it sucks that not all restaurants can cater to your needs, especially when you know you love their steak. But if you’re gonna go into anaphylaxis by walking inside, or its a moral affront to you that they serve salmon, it’s your responsibility not to go.

You can order the steak for delivery, or have a friend pick it up. You can get a very similar steak at a restaurant that does not sell salmon. If salmon is that critical, you need to check everything in advance. You need to talk to the chef about specifics or have someone you trust test taste for you. You need to find a place that’s safe for you to eat at. Because your situation does suck, and it does keep you from some places, but the chef doesn’t have to change the menu and the kitchen because all your friends go there all the time. It’s your problem. The restaurant doesn’t belong to you, and lots of people like salmon.

Also. If I tag something as "Creator Chose Not To Use Warnings" that means anything goes. There might be salmon in it, there might not be, but I have warned you about the possibility of allergens being present. Consume at your own risk

I’m noticing an increase in new fic writers on AO3 who…uh…mayy not know how to format their fics correctly..so here is a quick and VERY important tip

Using a random fic of mine as example..

Idk how many times I’ve read a good fic summary and been so excited to read before clicking on it and being met with an ugly wall of text. When I see a huge text brick with zero full line breaks my eyes blur and I just siiiigh bc either I click out immediately or I grin and bear it…it’s insufferable!

If a new character speaks, you need a line break. If you notice a paragraph is becoming too large, go ahead and make a line break and/or maybe reconfigure the paragraph to flow better. I’m not a pro writer or even a huge fic writer but…please…ty…

this is more of a generic writing necessity than anything, so there are of course a million articles about how to add paragraph breaks. Never be afraid to look up new things you're wondering about.

But this is one of those things that makes a difference for readers who may struggle with concentration or dyslexia or both; adding appropriate paragraph breaks makes a text more accessible.

Paragraphs aren't generally indented on webpages mainly because unless you're actually working with large paragraphs, like the ones you'd expect for a paper or essay, they sort of...don't work as intended formatting-wise. Since how text loads and organizes itself often depends on screen size, and screen size depends on your device and/or monitor size...let's say that what works as a gentle indent on a desktop can be a huge gap in space on a smart phone. It's especially apparent if you need bigger text for impaired vision reasons.

So. For your papers? They're perfect and work as intended. 10/10. For the internet? They're not necessarily helpful. Your word processor program might not even have a built in indent that formats correctly across different programs and websites...I know that in libreoffice it's incredibly annoying to arrange, and didn't even translate well when I tried to post the results online...

people say folks with adhd struggle with "delayed rewards" aka long term goals and as such we tend to focus more on short term rewards. what they don't talk about is that at when we Do accomplish long term goals we don't actually feel anything proportionate to the amount of work we did to achieve it. In my head I suffered for a while and then money spontaneously appeared in my bank account.
