someone: “Cass is socially inept and needed Rapunzel’s help to bring her out of her shell”

me, slamming the wip file open like I’d kicked a consulate’s frozen-shut gate open with a steel toed bovver some winters ago: What a wonderful time to do something productive about HATING the popular takes in this fandom.

I’m sorry, I just– “Cassandra is socially inept”

Image

Cassandra who understands the power imbalance between the heiress to the throne and the personal attendant of such, and says straight out of gate that it’s a one-in-a-million chance to be friends through that? Cassandra who lays out how she feels and why in very simple, very clear terms for a season and a half, until she’s reminded of that imbalance and of how inferior her position is? Cassandra who says “I promised your dad” rather than “I swore an oath to His Majesty the King” when she tries to convince Rapunzel not to make her job (bodyguarding) unnecessarily difficult or outright impossible? Cassandra who tries to tell Rapunzel to respect the customs of someplace she’s visiting in passing, rather than shove her own down the locals’ throats? Cassandra who doesn’t bat an eyelash at the head-of-staff’s brusque and dismissive manner, which we HAVE seen driving another person to running away and likely in tears? Cassandra who pulled off a flawless “hello fellow straight women” in order to seduce a violent extremist and head him off before he could steal sensitive information from the castle?

That Cassandra?

im stealing and reposting this because even without any added commentary it should be a self-evidently ridiculous example of the way that the panic over AI art has led to an overtly (and in some cases, explicitly) religious concern over the Sanctity of the Human Soul taking the spotlight from any discussion of labor rights or creative implications, but if i just reblogged the post on its own i run the risk of a smoothbrain assuming i actually agree with it. no i didn't add the circle and no i don't know why it's there either

anyways everyone saying i was blowing this out of proportion is willfully ignornant. 61.8k notes on the most transparent possible version of the point im arguing

I feel like there's two levels of chronically online. There's like, the variety where you recognize obscure memes and stupid drama and post constantly but have some sort of tether to reality and have friends in the real world and read the news from time to time, and then there's the kind where you genuinely don't realize that your political position or feelings about popular media are not just non-mainstream but actively fringe and that it's not emotional labor to pick people up from the airport.

we really need to re-introduce the term "publicity stunt" back into our vocabulary. too many people are getting continually duped by blatant marketing ploys bc fundamentally they don't see celebrities as....greedy millionaires cashing in on media trends to make money

hmmm i see what u mean, but entertain this idea with me....the misuse of the term 'publicity stunt' could potentially put an end to tiktok's popularity because the kids on that app would start to see themselves as 'posers' the way teens did in the '00s

IMPORTANT REMINDER TO MY EUROPEAN FOLLOWERS AND OTHER TUMBLR DENIZENS FROM AN AMERICAN DESERT-DWELLER:

Climate change is a bitch and summer is coming. If you don’t already have an air conditioner and/or fans, NOW is the time to get them.

THINGS YOU SHOULD BE SHOPPING FOR NOW:

—clothes made of cotton or linen

—air conditioner

—fans

—frozen meals that can be cooked in the microwave

—potable bottled water; you want five days’ worth per person and pet in your household

—bottled fruit juices; it does not matter if these are sugar-added because you’ll want the electrolytes

—electrolyte drinks

—electrolyte pills (you can get these online, I get mine from Amazon)

—popsicle molds to use with fruit and juice

—ice cube trays

—nonperishable salty snacks like peanuts

—one charger brick per adult in case of rolling blackouts or power outages; charge these at the beginning of May, and drain them via use once a month if they’re not needed

YOUR TO-DO LIST:

—check your home’s HVAC system if you didn’t do it at the beginning of winter. Make sure all the filters are clean and replace them if needed

—check the seals on your sinks and bathtub in case you have to run water to handle shortages

—make and freeze meals you can cook in the microwave or simply defrost. Remember to select light summer fare, not hearty winter soups and gravies

—purchase and freeze lunch meats and cheeses you can defrost and use this summer for sandwiches when it’s hot

—assemble your check-in list: elderly, pregnant, disabled, and immunocompromised friends and relatives who may struggle to get things they need when the heat wave hits. Have this list posted and ready to go through daily once the heat gets high. DON’T JUST ASSUME YOU WILL REMEMBER. WRITE IT ALL DOWN.

—create a list of emergency contacts in case of fire, heat stroke, and other heat-related emergencies. This should include your local version of 911 (I think in most of Europe it’s 112, but don’t rely on me as an American, LOOK IT UP NOW before you need it), your doctor’s phone number, and two emergency contacts. Keep it in a place where it can be easily found if someone needs to make these calls on your behalf.

—ask your doctor for an additional prescription for any medications you take, and fill it now. Extreme heat can cause disruptions in the supply chain. Make sure you cycle these meds; that’s to say, always use your oldest bottle first so you don’t end up with expired meds in an emergency.

—stock your first-aid kit. If you don’t have one, now is a good time to make one.

—if you own a car, get your yearly maintenance done now. You don’t want to be dealing with an inoperable vehicle if you need to evacuate.

Staying safe this summer starts now. Get your prep done.

Someone in the notes tagged this as yet another sign of Tumblr’s aging user base, and while this is kind of true (I’m 35), if you are a European minor I ENCOURAGE YOU STRONGLY TO SHARE THIS POST WITH YOUR ADULTS. If these are not things you can do yourself—I don’t expect a 15-year-old to know how to check the HVAC filters, for example, although if you’re old enough to be on Tumblr you’re definitely old enough to learn how to do it—enlist those around you who can.

This isn’t just a post for the adults. It’s for teenagers to use to educate their families and those around them, as well. I want ALL of you safe in July. (And yes, as we get a bit closer to the summer months I’ll make another post detailing how to utilize the items I’ve told you to purchase now.)

Re: the "stock up on medicines" part - MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A COOL PLACE TO STORE YOUR MEDICATION. This is important year round but ESPECIALLY during a heat wave. Most pills aren't meant to be stored above 25 degrees Celsius; prolonged exposure to temperatures above that means they can start to break down, and become less effective or even toxic!

Find a space in your apartment that doesn't get above that temperature even during hot days. Alternatively, check with your pharmacist if your particular medicine is safe to store in the fridge, or with a freeze pack - it's not a *great* idea because of the damp, but it could work for pills in foil packets, for a limited amount of time. As an absolute minimum don't put your meds anywhere where they can be exposed to direct sunlight.

corporate ppl are always like “i hate email comms they cause so many delays” but those people are fools. i crave communication delays. i hit send on an email and then immediately shoot a prayer up to the heavens that the response may take 2-3 days. let’s slow everything down just a bit thank you.

this is the most productive workforce in history and im just doing my part to dial that back a tad

Note: this is not a criticism about individual actions and behaviours but observations about general tresnds occurring in communities of people, as such it's not a personal attack directed at anyone or their actions, which in isolation are not a issue or the topic of this this post this is bothering me enough that i need to type it out, but is it just me and the (very rare number of) new fandoms i look at, or is general fandom dicussion these days just. completely dominated by making everything regarding the work and characters specifically about the person expressing that opinion, how much they relate about their blorbo, how much they wish *thing that happened in the last installment* would happen to them and "they're just like me frrrrr" (again, individually nothing wrong with that, but:) with barely nothing else being said in this shared space about y'know. the specific work and distinct characters and their interactions we're all reading/watching about?

i'm not saying relating a lot to a work or character is bad in any way, that's how you get more emotionally invested in something and it's nice when it happens. god knows i'd want more of that myself. or that you can't say these things, free speech baby, or that you shouldn't make everything about idk romance, which is what i'm principally interested in myself tbh!

But when I want to join a fandom it's usually to talk about the specific work the fandom is about. Not to go to the 'story discussion' channel or something and read only about how much the 32474356 people speaking are kinning a character, how they're so much like them, and how they wish they had a gf/bf like Blorbo, with genuinely all respect to the complex inner lives of everyone saying this which i'm sure are incredibly valid (and are probably mostly like, baby teens.) But the predominance of this type of discussion instead of a variety of them, that might include this type of blorbo talk but also things more focused on the work itself, at least in my case doesn't help me engage with a fandom?

Sometimes I'd also like to see some interesting discussions going on that doesn't start with "As someone who relates to blorbo because I also *this and that*, I think *analysis of the media that is completely unmoored from literally what is shown (no exaggeration) or which has no evidence either way and is mostly projecting and making it about themselves*" because valid and you do you, but the more i see this the more concerned I am about general reading comprehension, or the more i don't understand why there's this widespread inability to talk about fictional situations wihout relating them to one's own all the time (keyword being all the time)
