I wish more Discordians knew about Gurdjieff. Gurdjieff knew that consciousness does not appear when we are acting mechanically, automatically, reacting to things and being pulled along on autopilot. That’s a time of trance, of sleep. He knew that consciousness is most likely to appear during moments of internal friction and inner discomfort. Like the Discordians, he celebrates the beginner’s mind, the inner idiot, the way confusion LIBERATES us from certainty.Gurdjieff was the arch disturber. He pushed people into a state of discord with onesself. He gave us practical exercises - much like Robert Anton Wilson’s Quarter Experiment (and the others in Prometheus Rising) - which help you explore your own consciousness. Observe your own observations. Maybe they work, maybe they don’t, the point is to be the person who is actively trying something. The person who is searching for their being.Robert Anton Wilson and Timothy Leary were both big fans of Gurdjieff. They say the Fourth Way is an impermanent school–like the Discordian Society, it appears and disappears in different forms. I think that in some ways, the RAW/Leary work is a manifestation of it. I’ve been exporing G for about a year now and I find it to be VIVIFYING.
