When I was an asexual kid, I was so unable to conceive of myself being happy fitting into the Evangelical, amatonormative world that I knew that I fantasized about being in a monastery. Now that I’m an adult, I recognize this wish as the suppressed desire for self-anihilation. When I was an older kid and then went to college, I became incredibly anxious and depressed, as a direct outgrowth of that old desire to escape life as a married cis person.

I’m so, so glad I was able to find the queer community; it was my saving grace. Queer support of asexuals and aromantics is absolutely critical. Our experiences are fundamentally queer, and questioning and newfound A’s deserve to be lifted up by the other LGBTQ’s.
