The Outbursts of Everett True was a comic strip that ran in papers from 1905 to 1927, wherein the aforementioned Everett True regularly beat the everliving shit out of rude people as a warning to anyone else who might consider being rude. Men have not only been taking up too much room on public transport for about as long as public transport has existed, but the people around them have been irritated about it for at least a hundred years. The next time someone tries to claim that manspreading is a false phenomenon, please direct them to this strip so that Everett True can correct their misconceptions with an umbrella upside the head.

I have never before heard of Everett True, but if he “regularly beat the everliving shit out of rude people as a warning to anyone else who might consider being rude,” I have a strong spiritual connection with him.

I’m very lucky to own a book that’s a collection of most of these comics (sadly not all of them) and would highly recommend hunting these down if you can. Sorry for the lack of a scanner but phone photos will just have to do.

He was a enjoyable cuss who didn’t care for war mongering.

Especially profitable war mongering and excuses for it!

He certainly didn’t like selfish husbands and fathers!

Politicians who turned on their words once they got theirs weren’t safe.

He said fuck the police!

He absolutely didn’t like people ruining little things for kids.

He stood up for foreigners. Especially those doing their best to communicate with limited second language knowledge.

He was not having any tomfoolery when it came to gun safety and laws. Especially with youth involved.

You had better not abuse a animal with him nearby. He’d right that wrong real quick!

And best of all him and his wife were both prickly cusses together. Relationship goals.

Yes songs, rhymes and dances are very important to the Jellicles. They have a lot of traditional songs that are passed down and certain songs sung at certain events, and dances!

For instance, Kittens have a Presentation. Once they get old enough to feel confident on their feet and can carry a tune, they have to make their debut, so to speak. They can choose either a song or dance to perform, depending on which they're more drawn to, but it has to be of their own. It has to come from their heart. It's really a casual thing, just an event to encourage their confidence and to get a sense of what it means to be a Jellicle, and it allows a kitten to kind of introduce themselves, and who they are. There is no certain age for the presentation; A kitten will present themselves to the tribe when they're ready, and it's always a joyous celebration. Sometimes more than one kitten will perform at the same time. Some siblings have done duets. Either way parents beam with pride watching their young ones decide to have their first official song and dance.

There is a second rite of passage too, when a kitten becomes an adult, and that's actually what we see Victoria doing in the show. The young adult performs their first proper solo to the tribe, and it marks the beginning of the Jellicle Ball, and they are officially old enough to find a mate/court someone, if they choose to. She obviously chose Plato. You're the guest of honor at the ball that year essentially, and it makes a poignant point. It's a reminder to spend your years well, and to enjoy all that lies ahead. The Jellicle Choice is made that night, so there is a cat saying goodbye to this phase of life, and you are entering it. It's a cyclical flow of life, just like the moon itself. After your first Jellicle Ball as an adult, it's your responsibility to extend the ball invitation to the next cat in line at the next ball, which is why Mistoffelees is the one to judge Victoria's solo and give his approval, and to open up the ball. He had his rite of passage last, and now it was Victoria's turn.

Personally I feel that introductory songs are earned, not an automatic. They're earned for great deeds or great loves, like if a cat has been in the tribe a long time and so well loved by everyone, or if they've been a great protector or have saved someone from great danger, or if they're just so unique that they truly shine out as an individual. I don't think everyone does get a song, at least, not a song sung by the entire tribe. I think often some Jellicles will come up with songs for their loved ones specifically as gifts or sometimes even in remembrance, if someone has passed on, and those songs stay in the family. It is possible for a cat to get a song in their kitten years, though it's only happened a handful of times over the years. Some of the "bigger" songs, like Skimbleshanks' song, even become traditional songs/tales that get handed down through generations.

On the other hand, some cats give themselves songs if they have something to say about their identity, something they want to present to the world (like Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer) but these songs don't fill the traditional song role, and indeed many Jellicles come up with tons of songs for themselves and their friends over the years. When it's a Song Song, if you know what I mean, everyone can feel the difference.

Naturally there's also singing and dancing customs for choosing a lifelong mate, or the birth of a kitten, and as it stands to reason, the death of a cat. Basically for any significant life event the Jellicles have a song or dance for it, but often add new ones to the mix, or some once in a lifetime dances, if a cat wants to make the event extra special. They have songs for pretty much anything. Feeling sick? Sing this one. Feeling lonely? Sing this one. Grieving? Sing this one.

Oral tradition is obviously extremely important to the Jellicles, and they have excellent memories, or else all these wonderful songs and dances would disappear over the years. Some other tribes are quite musical as well, but the Jellicles are the most well known for their love of music.

No one’s saying this so I guess I’ve gotta: no more shirtless scenes for men if the actors gotta starve himself. Its just as bad as woman being forced to lose weight for a needless sex scene/photoshoot what have you. If it endangers the health of the individual it should not be encouraged.

ok lets talk about how tom hooper only let tugger and bombalurina sing the rum tug tugger and macavity because it was realy bad for their character

the songs they sing is important for how we see them. lets talk about these songs

tugger

the rum tug tugger: this is the song that introduce us to the rum tug tugger and well he is show to be a young cat who is aware the other young toms look up to him and most of the queens have a crush on. he is a cool cat who seems to think he is above the other  cats

old deuteronomy: here we see that tugger is aware that he is not the top cat in the tribe. he show he respect old deuteronomy jist as much as the rest of the tribe

magical mister mistoffelees: tugger show again high respect for a other cat. this time a cat who is not of a higher status than him. more than that he come through for his tribe when they start to lose hope. tugger show them there is a way to save old deut and he does it in a way that lift their spirits

bombalurina

the gumbie cat: bombalurina is very respectful of the way jenny help the mouse and crocroaches. she is aware that the older cat work hard and its clear she cares for her

the rum tug tugger here we see her act for the first time form the group.  she is the queen that really try to flirt with tugger. just like tugger she is aware how hot she is. the first good look we have of her character is that she very lustful

grizabella the glamour cat: we see here for the first time how protective she is of demeter. huging her after she get scared and lay a arm around her shoulder when grizabella start to leave to comfort her. she also have a little bit more focus than the other cats when she show disgust for grizabella which may implide that they have a past together

macavity: this is the song that hint to some backstory for bombalurina. just like demeter she seems to have a past with macavity. she warn the other cats of his crimes. 

so yeah hooper did not just take most of bomba’s and tugger’s songs away. he took away their personality. their relationship and bonds with their tribe. in the movie they are just there to sing two of the most popular songs of the musical.

realy both bombalurina and tugger deserve more
