Artists, let’s talk about Instagram commission scammers

There’s been a huge rise in commission scammers recently, mostly on Instagram. A lot of new artists don’t know what to look out for, so I figured this might help people.

How they begin

Usually the scammer will write to you asking about a commission. Something deceptively cute - mostly I encounter asks about pet portraits, with one or two photos sent. They’ll probably try to sell you a sweet little story, like “It’s for my son’s birthday”. They will insist that they love your artwork and style, even though they don’t follow you or never liked a single piece of your art.

What to look out for:

  1. Their profiles will either be private, empty, or filled with very generic stuff, dating at most a few years back.
  2. Their language will be very simple, rushed or downright bad. They might use weird emojis that nobody ever uses. They will probably send impatient “??” when you don’t answer immediately. They’re in a crunch - lots of people to scam, you know.
  3. They’ll give you absolutely no guidelines. No hints on style, contents aside from (usually) the pet and often a name written on the artwork, no theme. Anything you draw will be perfect. Full artistic freedom. In reality they don’t really care for this part.
  4. They’ll offer you a ridiculous amount of money. Usually 100 or 300 USD. They’ll often put in a phrase like “I am willing to compensate you financially” and “I want the best you can draw”, peppered with vague praise. It will most likely sound way too good to be true. That’s because it is.

Where the scam actually happens

If you agree, they will ask you for a payment method. They’ll try to get to this part as soon as possible.

Usually, they’ll insist on PayPal. And not just any PayPal. They’ll always insist on sending you a transfer immediately. None of that PayPal Invoice stuff (although some do have methods for that, too). They’ll really, REALLY want to get your PayPal email address and name for the transfer - that’s what they’re after. If you insist on any other method, they’ll just circle back to the transfer “for easiest method”. If you do provide them with the info, most likely you’ll soon get a scam email. It most likely be a message with a link that will ultimately lead to bleeding you dry. Never, and I mean NEVER click on any emails or links you get from them. It’s like with any other scam emails you can ever get.

A few things can happen here:

  • They overpay you and ask for the difference to be wired back. Usually it will go to a different account and you’ll never see that money again.
  • They’ll overpay you “for shipping costs” and ask you to forward the difference to their shipping company. Just like before, you’ll never see that money again.
  • The actual owner of the account (yes, they most likely use stolen accounts to wire from) will realize there’s been something sketchy going on and request a refund via official channels. Your account will be charged with fees and/or you get in trouble for fraudulent transactions.
  • You will transfer the money from your PayPal credit to your bank account and they will make a shitstorm when they want their money back, making your life a living hell. They will call you a scammer, a thief, make wild claims, wearing you down and forcing you into wiring money “back” - aka to their final destination account.

Never, EVER wire money to anyone. This is not how it’s supposed to go. Use PayPal Invoice for secure exchanges where the client needs to provide you with their email, not the other way around.

What to do when you encounter a scammer:

  • Ask the right questions: inquire about the style, which artwork of yours they like, as much details as you can. They won’t supply you with any good answers.
  • Don’t let the rush of the exchange, their praise and the promise of insanely good money to get to you. That’s how they operate, that’s how they make you lose vigilance.
  • Don’t engage them. As soon as you realize it might be a scam, block them. The sense of urgency they create with their rushed exchange, and pressure they put on you will sooner or later get to you and you might do something that you’ll regret later.
  • Never wire money to anyone. Never give out your personal data. Never provide your email, name, address or credit card info.
  • Don’t be deceived by receiving a payment, if you somehow agree to go along with it. Just because it’s there now doesn’t mean it can’t be withdrawn.

Here is a very standard example of such an exchange. I realized it’s a scam pretty fast and went along with it, because I wanted good screenshots for you guys, so I tried going very “by the book” with it.

Please share this post, make it reach as many artists as possible. Let young or inexperienced artists know that this is going on. So many people have no idea that this is a thing. Let’s help each other out. If you think I missed any relevant info, do add it as an rb!

Also, if you know other scam methods that you think should be shared, consider rb-ing this post with them below. Having a master post of scam protection would AWESOME to have in the art community.

“AI art isn’t real art” boring, pedantic, relies on defining the undefinable and an ever changing goalpost of what Real Art is.

“AI art is fueled by massive art theft” correct, concrete demonstration of the harm it’s doing to actual human beings and not just the nebulous concept of Art Itself.

friendly reminder that ai is not an automatic collage machine, and is not the devil, and i am sick of the fearmongering

i would give my writing an ai, i dont care, because i know how it actually works and knows that it doesnt fucking matter.

Unfriendly fucking reminder that AI is a copyright violating machine, that the original AI projects were funded by Elon Fucking Musk because he does not see value in the work of artists, and that AIs have problems with constantly putting signatures and watermarks back into art

BECAUSE THEY'RE TRAINED ON SO MUCH STOLEN, COPYRIGHT-VIOLATING ART.

Implying that those of us who have moral objections to AI art (and writing) are "fearmongering" or that we just don't know what we're talking about ignores the very very blatant art theft occurring.

But no, AI art doesn't steal! That's why it's totally not reproducing watermarks here!

Or here!

Or signatures and copyright lines in all of these!

When you feed the AI which is BASED ON STOLEN ART, you are telling thieves that you're cool with art being stolen as long as you get something temporary, free and momentarily cool.

Fuck off. ^__^

This is an ai “artwork” hate blog now

like look you have this soulless thing that has anonymously and indiscriminately cannibalized years of hard-earned learning and discipline and struggle and creativity.

and you type in a little thing and it just. spits out some mashed up amalgam of other peoples inspiration, other peoples skills and dedication and livelihoods. and you sit there and smile and tag it “my art” like its not a horrible spit in the face of every artist who made that shitty little program possible. and now you think you have no NEED to pay an artist, you can just make it yourself. as if you’ve made anything??? fuck you and fuck ai “art”

Another year, another review.

It wasn’t a great year for art with me- there were a few months I couldn’t manage to churn out anything. This coming year I hope I can just get myself to focus less on being perfect and draw more things that i just enjoy- I want 2020 to be the year of self indulgence. Which!! I know will help me improve more- those few months at the start of the year were pretty spontaneous drawings, things I just decided ‘i want to do this’ and did it- so that’s what I want this year to be.

To another year, to another Decade!

If I was complimenting an artist I would simply not bring up my own lack of skill.

RIP to people who think self deprecation is a form of praising others but I'm different.

I just want to say something right quick, because it’s a massive peeve of mine:

Do Not Call Your Art Ugly

Why? Because whether you think so or not, there is someone that admires your work and looks up to you as an inspiration, role model, or otherwise. By saying your art is ‘ugly’ you tell those people that look to you that theirs is even below that standard.

How do I know this? Because I’ve been that person that looked up to someone else only to read/hear “wow this looks like shit” about a piece that was beyond my own talent level.

Don’t like a piece? Say you’re not satisfied with how it turned out, or that it didn’t turn out how you wanted. We don’t always meet our own expectations but this theme of saying your art is ‘shitty’ ‘ugly’ etc. needs to Stop.

A Quick Guide on the new PayPal Cash, for US Artists/Commissioners that use PayPal-

I just wanted to make a small post regarding a Big Change™ that… doesn’t seem to actually change much. Starting May 7th, 2019, if you use PayPal to hold a balance (common for commission artists) or transfer money to others via PayPal, then recent changes in US law has them switching to a new system for doing so; this is called PayPal Cash and PayPal Cash Plus.

I do a lot of research/have actual training in this sort of thing, so I’ll boil down a lot of reading to explain the important changes:

PayPal Cash is exactly the thing you’re already using, just under a new name, and requiring a bonus piece of identification & agreement to a new Terms of Service.

So from now on, to maintain a balance in PayPal - and to ‘sell things’ via invoices, it seems so far - you’ll need to verify a PayPal Cash account. To do so, you’ll need to provide your name, birthdate, primary physical address, and the last four digits of your SSN.

As for PayPal Cash Plus, it’s the exact same thing, only you have this instead if you opt to open a specific debit card or credit card through them (it grants you access to some money-managing perks, as well as withdrawal from certain physical locations, and so on). More than likely, you won’t need/want this if you’re a smaller-time artist/average human using PayPal, or even if you’ve got a bigger name, unless you want a card through them.

That said, please be aware of a big asterisk you are agreeing to in their Terms of Service by making/confirming a PayPal Cash/Plus account:

You are agreeing to an updated ToS that includes an Arbitration Agreement clause.

In short and most importantly, this means that if you & PayPal have a legal disagreement, then you won’t take them to court or join a class action lawsuit against them. Per their own ToS:

You and PayPal agree that any claim or dispute at law or equity that has arisen or may arise between us will be resolved in accordance with the Agreement to Arbitrate provisions set forth below… Among other things it: … Includes a Prohibition of Class and Representative Actions and Non-Individualized Relief pursuant to which you agree to waive your right to participate in a class action lawsuit against us.

This is fancy legal speak for ‘if anything goes wrong, you play by our rules when settling it, and this will only happen out of court.’ This is something you absolutely want to opt out of, and legally they’re required to allow it - but like most corporations, they make it as frustratingly involved and as limited a chance as possible.

To opt out of the arbitration clause, you must mail them a written notice, and the opt-out notice must be postmarked no later than 30 days after the date you accept these terms and conditions for the first time.

So once you click ‘agree’ and make your PayPal Cash account official, mail them the opt-out notice within 30 days.

Point blank.

… And that about covers the changes in the situation! So, to sum up:

TL;DR:

  • PayPal Cash is effectively a new agreement to the same abilities you had in holding a PayPal Balance,
  • You must confirm your identity (including last 4 digits of your SSN) to officially make your PayPal Cash account,
  • Doing so has you agreeing to the new Terms of Service,
  • Make sure you opt out of the Arbitration Agreement within 30 days of making your PayPal Cash account.

Hope all of this helps other artists & PayPal users out there that are confused or unaware of the updates! Good luck and best of bank account balances to you all. ♡♡♡
