Writing poetry to reduce stress: Vanaja Malathy

Writing poetry to reduce stress: Vanaja Malathy

In the latest edition of AuthorTalks, Vanaja Malathy discusses her creative writing journey at length with us. She talks about her transition from the shoes of a teacher, a lecturer, a professor, and a principal to being a poet. Her journey as a creative writer is a true inspiration, especially for those who, for some reason or another, haven’t been able to write during their professional life…

Gone

Dangling swords of Damocles.

A face full of Icarus's wings' hot molten wax.

Tick-tock goes the clock; Always More, and never less, unless measuring Time, left.

Surface tension As the utmost flimsy, struggle-mocking Barrier, established To deny a drowning man Even his last Breath.

Crawling

Through a one-way-out narrowing tunnel, Halfway realising Its only obstruction Will be the vessel named Death.

With shoulders scrubbing against The harshest Reality

No, you will not make it. This is not a game. Never was. Although you did not know this When you started; this is every end's worth.

Will you Embrace the light You cannot reach, or clubber Your head against the slate to be released, Or slither back into the abyss To cling to a life wherein There is nothing Left

To live?

What then is bravery and what is cowardice?

A dream, escalating within The subconsciously suspected obscenities Of waking up; a trading planes Due to the mundanity of muscle Memory.

A heart-attack at three a.m., When the mnemonic muscle Decides to take No more.

And the bruises on a chest That suffered frantic, failed,

CPR.

This is what I am, With and without Your love.

Tropical Storming during times of duress; as tempestuous scenes sculpt time sharply tied into twine of our times. Sometimes my follicles say to my arms and body

You the are speed bumps of the wind

You are as the sands of time

Stuck in a rut

Seeds of social experience pass around past me

I am not furniture nor dirt

I am magic

I talk to Groot

Actually Groot works for me

As long as my head is held high

As long as the clouds meet my eyes

As far away as the horizon can stay

As close to my eyes as my pupils to my irises

I grow flowers and leaves and fruits

I grow growing things and beings

I grow people into friends

It’s a sad recollection to lose my collection

It’s a wonderful freeing thing to lose objects

Weight of matter is not weight of meaning

Losing losers and or weight is not the same for every body so don’t expect the same thing from a different person

Let fast low riders to slow long lifers live life happily every moment every day every one

Let love spring making heads ring into happy beings bringing back to the present: exuberance in acknowledgement of the gift of the present.

Why? Live life.

Wai means water. Without it, no live life.

Instant death. Like instant ramen. Only with no water, you’d die thirsty with no broth or noodles.

Make better and more plant based noodles.

Make plants make noodles instead of leaves.

Hibiscus flower petals are TEA LEAVES.

Go read hibiscus tea leaves and my future.

Go.

Alone (Demonic Mix) - January 2022

After a very long break I finally got back into music making in 2022. I had started messing around with a few samples in Lockdown in 2020, but didn't get around to finishing anything.

This was a track I worked on a few years earlier, with different vocals. I was never totally happy with it, and that hung around in the back of my mind for years, I had unfinished business with this track!

So I revisited it and found Kara's wonderful rendition of Alone by Edgar Allan Poe on ccMIxter. It was a perfect fit. I did think about adding the original vocals back in, with one on each channel à la The Murder Mystery, but decided against it as I had messed around with them so much trying to mask them, and couldn't find the original.

The demonic voice in the background is actually a slowed down sample of speech from a well known Sci-Fi movie. At one point it reveals itself.

Reviews for Alone (Demonic Mix) on ccMixter and Looperman:

  • Deeply cool groove.
  • Hey Kirkoid! It’s great to see you here! I really dig your dark, hypnotic mix with those crisp, catchy drums. Thanks so much for including my vox.
  • Wow, what a fantastic intro my friend. Great track. Well done, Maj.
  • Cool, it is retro and future at the same time. awesome!
  • Really creative work and like Maj said, the intro was pretty awesome. Well done. I hope all is well. Bear
