hc + movies, fairytales, drawing & nightmares :*
send me hc + a wordaccepting!
moviescaitlin loves movies, but she has almost no time to watch them --- and since she needs subtitles, she can’t just have them on in the background when she’s working. she’s almost always late to seeing the new releases, especially since captioned performances always seem to be at really inconvenient times for her, but when she does go to the cinema, it’s usually with her sister, because the two of them don’t spend enough time together as it is, and what better thing to bond over than boxes of popcorn bigger than their heads?
fairytalescaitlin was never a big fairytales person --- she used to get annoyed by the fact that all the women needed ‘saving’ by some prince or other, and if she and her sister did end up playing princesses or equivalent, she always wanted to be a knight princess. but she has very fond memories of her father reading stories to her before she went to sleep, fumbling through the signs in a language he hadn’t mastered yet just so that he could read to his daughter, and if nothing else, that makes her think fondly about fairytales.
drawingcaitlin is...not going to win any prizes for her art any time soon. she’s gotten very good at anatomical drawings that do look vaguely like the part of the body they’re meant to be resembling, but art was far from her best subject in school, although she did enjoy ceramics and getting to mess around with clay. she doodles in the margins of her notes when she’s studying, but just simple things like flowers, squares, and the occasional cat face.
nightmaresfor a very long time, caitlin’s nightmares were always about the same thing --- the people she loved dying horribly, being alone in an entire world where nobody spoke her language, sometimes she could even feel the ekg monitor flatlining. she still gets those kinds of dreams, and has to call her sister to calm down, but they’re much less frequent. now, she also has nightmares about failing, and drowning under all the things she has to learn, and everyone laughing her out of med school.
how badly do they want to obtain their life objectives? how do they pursue them?
some character solidifying meme from like 2 months ago.
desperately. caitlin feels like she’s got a lot to prove, for one, going into a profession that is typically the domain of the hearing, and she doesn’t want to let down the professors at college who encouraged her and gave her the confidence to go after something like this. she wants to do something she thinks her father would have been proud of, as well as make her sister proud --- the two people who really raised her and looked out for her. and she wants to help people. it doesn’t always show in her manner, but she does, particularly her community, because she’s a part of it, she understands it, and she knows how much it sucks to finally have to see a doctor and have them not know a single sign.
it’s a challenge, undoubtedly, but not one that she shies away from. caitlin’s incredibly stubborn and can be very bull-headed when she’s focused on getting something, and that’s how she approaches this. she works harder than everyone else, she asks more questions than everybody else, and she’s prouder than anybody else to be here. there’s absolutely no question in cait’s mind: she’s going to be a doctor.
he greets her with a smile, small, brief as he takes his drink from her with offered thanks. “uh. yeah—” accompanied by a nod, quicker than it takes for him to offer verbal confirmation. christ. this is new territory, a little difficult and he’s not quite certain how much she’ll be able to catch. “i’ve got two. um.” should he be doing something with his hands? probably best not to even try, really.
he’s more nervous than she is --- caitlin is used to this, a constant presence in her life now that she’s not spending her time solely around Deaf people, and maybe there’s marginal irritation that heats beneath the surface of her skin, but at least it keeps her warm. and she wants to at least stumble through a conversation with him---he found her cat. that trumps everything else. she nods (see, she understands, or at least understands enough), raising two fingers and pointing to herself. [i have two, too.] cait frowns and then pulls out her phone so she can write. You met Echo, and Duchess.
“–Yes!”
Wait. Gotta sign it, don’t be rude. Iah nods his head enthusiastically as he brings one hand up, makes a fist, and makes a similar nodding motion with his hand.
When should we go?
perfect---not that she thought he’d say no, particularly. iah seems just as into space as caitlin is...with a slight obsession with aliens that she lacks. [tonight? are you free tonight?]
He brings his own glass to his lips, mirroring her in action as dark hues never leave her own. & as he swallows, head tilts in a curious motion, all to INTRIGUED by the girl who spoke to him through beer mats. But as hands raise, signing something to him, it’s then he UNDERSTANDS——she’s deaf. & her hands lower, scribbling something down quickly, & he can’t help as his own gaze lowers to, the corners of his lips curving upwards into a smirk. A hand extends, pulling the beer mat from, pausing a moment before writing, HI: )
she sees the moment that it clicks for him, as clearly as if his face was subtitled, the understanding that the beer mat writing is less because she’s quirky and more because she doesn’t talk. and he’s cute; she watches him write the word down with a smile on her face, turning into laughter. [hi!] the word is just a wave, and she shakes her head, amusement evident. [you don’t need to write too.] of course, he probably doesn’t understand what she’s saying, but she takes it slow; he’s played along long enough that it doesn’t bother her. her fingers point from her eyes to his mouth: [i read lips.]
also i’d really appreciate headcanon questions, even if it’s just hc + word type ones!!

@heartsleeved ♥
is this her third trip to this particular starbucks today? yes. has she consumed far too much coffee for a person her size? given how jittery she feels, everything sparking bright, world buzzing, absolutely. does caitlin give a single fuck? no way. she’s in the midst of med school finals; she thinks she can get away with it. if she’d wanted to sleep at any point in the next decade, she wouldn’t have chosen to become a doctor. cut her and she’d bleed coffee, at this point.
she’s exhausted, wrung out, emotions bubbling beneath the surface no matter how hard she tries to swallow them down --- if she fails this year, she’ll prove to everyone who thought she couldn’t do it that Deaf people aren’t capable of being doctors. she’s got the weight of her entire community on her back...she has to pass. she needs to do well. she needs more coffee. and she needs to not have an asshole glued to her phone barrel right into her, knocking her books to the floor.
[watch where you’re going!] she snaps, hands staccato; doubtless the woman’s words are something rude (it’s caitlin’s fault, Deaf people can’t read, Deaf people shouldn’t be allowed out unaccompanied because they get in the way --- same shit, different day, and she’s seen it all before), but all she has to do is drop to pick up her books, and it’s gone, no ability to hear it, no focusing on the woman’s lips. it doesn’t hurt, words like that, especially when she doesn’t know what was said, it’s just draining, and caitlin sighs loudly as she straightens up, pulling herself back together and heading for the counter. now she really needs a coffee, or three. maybe a muffin.
