used as a colonial/settler concept? absolutely. the concept of taming ~new land~ or otherwise is extremely fucked up and harmful to indigenous people everywhere. generalised european farming is also terrible for most environments it’s been introduced to and is strip mining them of essential nutrients and biodiversity.

at the same time, cottagecore has been used as an overarching term by multiple different marginizalied groups to express their desire to not constantly live in distress or an environment that is consistently damaging for them and i don’t begrudge them that. i personally find most people saying they’re anti cottagecore to be performative.

the majority of the cottagecore community aren’t planning on going on to colonise and continuously oppress local people, and are actively trying to engage with indigenous voices, permaculture, environmentalism and other necessary concepts for the continued health and survival of literally everyone. the people who want the trad wife/manifest destiny/white supremecist “cottagecore” literally don’t give shit about explanations of why term/idea may have harmful connotations to certain groups, and they’re not going to stop regardless.

all that’s being done is that 1) people are abandoning an aesthetic to be co-opted by those racist/misogynistic fuckers 2) people move onto another concept/aesthetic without actually engaging why the way they view land or these issues are problematic. shaming people for enjoying cottagecore doesn’t do shit, and instead we should be pushing for reframing of concepts and education about why certain ideas are harmful and damaging, and where improvements can be made.

You need to learn to separate your idea of aro and ace people from the Discourse. Let me break it down for you:

1. Being an inclusionist does not automatically absolve you of all aphobia. You can be an inclusionist and still perpetuate anti-aspec ideas and reblog anti-aspec dogwhistles. I see fellow “inclusionists” do this all the time. Exclusionism isn’t the only problem facing aspec people, or else we wouldn’t have been asking for support in the first place (which, if you must know, is why the discourse started anyway–we weren’t being quiet anymore–but I digress).

2. On the same note, aspec people’s existence does not boil down to discourse. We are not just an Opinion, and asking you to support us, acknowledge us, and be conscious of aphobia is NOT the same thing as asking you to make a discourse blog, follow discourse blogs, engage with discourse posts, or argue with exclusionists on our behalf. If an aspec person asks you to be more supportive and you tell them not to drag you into discourse, that shows us that you only see our existence as a discourse topic and that we cannot trust you, even if you claim to be our ally.

3. Jokes about the discourse aren’t funny if they aren’t coming from aspecs. We don’t see it as a Tired Topic or some Funny Joke On Tumblr That Went Too Far. It’s not funny to us, and it shouldn’t be funny to you.

4. Engaging with the discourse on our behalf doesn’t make you a hero. Especially if you speak over us and don’t let us correct you when you misuse our terminology or misrepresent us. I see inclusionists being arophobic or forgetting that aros exist all the time and that’s the tea.

5. If you claim you ‘support aspec people but are an exclusionist’ or ‘support aspec people but are neutral/unsure of where you stand on the discourse’ you don’t actually support us, you are not our ally, and we do not trust you. I block people who say this.

6. I cannot stress this enough. If you see aro or ace and you immediately think “discourse”, please reflect on why that is and reconsider the way you think about aspec people and our identities.

I have nearly 50,000 posts on my Tumblr blog which I have been running since 2011. It is literally impossible for me to sift through all of that for every single “problematic” post just for fear of some jerk dredging up something I said eight years ago.

And honestly? I shouldn’t anyway. You can literally make the opposite argument: that it’s wrong to hide your past. If we all keep pretending that ideological purity is possible and erasing the journeys we’ve gone though to learn from mistakes and become better, more educated people I feel like that does more harm than good.

Anyway, your attitude is victim blaming. We should not normalize a culture of fear where everyone is desperate to hide their flaws because someone might start a harassment campaign against them. The solution is ending that culture, not saddling people with the burden of dealing with it.
