Weekend Book Giveaway: Zeroboxer

This week we have a brand new title by Northwest author Fonda Lee called Zeroboxer, which is an awesome mix of science fiction, action, adventure, fighting, and secrets.

From the publisher:

A rising star in the weightless combat sport of zeroboxing, Carr “the Raptor” Luka dreams of winning the championship title. Recognizing his talent, the Zero Gravity Fighting Association assigns Risha, an ambitious and beautiful Martian colonist, to be his brandhelm–a personal marketing strategist. It isn’t long before she’s made Carr into a popular celebrity and stolen his heart along the way. As his fame grows, Carr becomes an inspirational hero on Earth, a once-great planet that’s fallen into the shadow of its more prosperous colonies. But when Carr discovers a far-reaching criminal scheme, he becomes the keeper of a devastating secret. Not only will his choices put everything he cares about in jeopardy, but they may also spill the violence from the sports arena into the solar system.

What would it be like to fight in zero gravity?  Good question!

For your chance to win this hot new paperback, tell me why you would (or would not) want to leave Earth.

Winner will be selected by Random Number Generator on Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Be sure to leave a name with your entry, and check back to see if you won. To win you must be a teen (6th-12th grade, or age 12-18) who uses a Sno-Isle Library.

I have some things to say after reading this @BuzzFeed piece on the suck of being a debut author: http://www.buzzfeed.com/courtneymaum/nipple-deep-in-a-mudpit-of-despair#.tmP407QWZ

Being an author is hard. It can be competitive, humbling, stressful, angst-ridden. BUT SO ARE LOTS OF JOBS. Being an author is a job.

If you're an author and think it's hard to act cheerful online when you're not feeling it, try working at Starbucks.

Yes, there are times I feel wicked jealous of other authors. We all feel that way sometimes. Chill the hell out. This isn't Highlander.

The only one you are really competing against is yourself. You are fighting every day to become the writer only YOU can be.

"It sure would be nice to have some folks to talk to." Yeah it would. Get some. Real friends. Fellow authors. Surround yourself.

If your friends ditch you because you got a book deal, THEY AREN'T REAL FRIENDS.

I empathize w/ the @BuzzFeed author. But if one book launch nearly breaks you, how will you do it again, and again, to make a career?

Steel your emotional core. How else are you going to write 2, 5, 10, 20 books? That's what I want to do. Even if they're never pubbed.

Sometimes publishing makes us sad, disappointed, angry, bitter. But we WRITE STORIES. Still the best damn job on the planet.

This isn’t your usual book trailer. Instead, I wanted to share with you one of my favorite parts of writing Zeroboxer: envisioning and depicting the sport of zeroboxing. How would a combat sport work in the absence of gravity? Check out what these martial artists and fighters have to say about it.

ZEROBOXER releases April 8, 2015 from Flux/Llewellyn. It's the story of Carr "the Raptor" Luka, a young man battling to make it to the top in the world of zero gravity combat amid brewing interplanetary conflict between Earth and Mars. www.fondalee.com

TEN BAD ALTERNATE TITLES FOR ZEROBOXER

I’m playing a little game today, because Stefanie Lyons (author of DATING DOWN, April 2015) tagged me. Stefanie and I share both a publisher (Flux) and a book release date (April 8!) so of course I couldn’t say no. The rules are simple:

“Scroll through your manuscript and stop on random place. Whatever you land on becomes one of ten terrible titles. I picked the first short sentences I randomly came across.”

Okay, I do admit that when I landed on something like “He sat down,” I punted and jumped to the next interesting sentence. So here you go:

Ten Alternate Titles for ZEROBOXER

  1. Splatter Shots
  2. Admit It. You’re Afraid.
  3. The Most Epic Interplanetary Sporting Event In History
  4. Elimination Rounds
  5. Are You Kidding?
  6. Terran Pride
  7. I Don’t Like That Man
  8. Dozens Of Microphones And Cameras
  9. He Nailed Me With A Left
  10. A Reverent Hush

Hmmmm. Some of those actually pique my interest.

In one of the first emails my editor sent me, he said that he planned to keep my original title. Thank God, because I had no other title ideas besides ZEROBOXER, and if he’d wanted to change it I would have been screwed. And seriously, can you imagine any other title on this cover?

That was fun. Who’s next? I tag:

Valynne E. Maetani, author of INK & ASHES

N.K. Traver, author of DUPLICITY

The Ant Man movies starts. Ant Man is tiny. He is on screen for five seconds. Natasha steps on Ant Man. The camera pans up to Black Widow, ready for battle. It was a Black Widow movie all along.

This is what we all really want.

I would never stop smiling.
