this may sound like i’ve got the ol’ nostalgia goggles on, but i think explorers of sky is considered the best game in the mystery dungeons franchise not just because of the story (which is obviously amazing), but i think a big part of it (at least why i love it) is the gorgeous and detailed sprite art and the music made with the DS’s limitations. I love psmd but since the 3DS can process high res 3D models, all of the cutscenes are just moving those around and there’s no need for the sprite animation or those sick shots of the setting that explorers had, and the music is made with real instruments to boot. That’s obviously an improvement by technical standards, but I just remember admiring the sprite art in explorers for so long every time a character had a unique movement or it showed the drop-dead beautiful locations. For example:

And the soundtrack speaks for itself. Something about the DS’s sound makes the music… crisper, if that makes sense. I’m obviously not upset that Spike Chunsoft is improving and expanding the franchise but I doubt the mystery dungeons games will get the same thrill out of me now, which is probably stupid of me. That’s why explorers of sky will always be such a special game to me. It really impacted me because of the way it set its world and atmospheres.
