A while ago I was invited to contribute to the Form the Ashes ATLA fan Zine for @recovery-zine!

I got to illustrate this double spread! (which was terrifying, thank you) Pretty sure this is where the thought "Jee survived the north" began to form for me! The theme was about the war ending, peace settling and people getting to come home and reunite with loved ones.

put some colors on this and made korrasami a bit gayer i hope you'll like it!

people blame mako for fumbling the two baddest bitches on the planet, but if i knew one of them, let alone both of them, i wouldn’t know how to act either. i’d be acting like boo boo the fool just to get them to notice me, and then when they did actually notice me my whole brain would just shut down and turn to mush probably. and i’m saying this as an adult woman with game. mako was a socially inept maladjusted traumatized teenage boy with no swag and no prospects. the fact that the two most beautiful powerful amazing girls in the world were both vying for his poor autistic ass after spending his whole life just trying to survive in the conditions that made oliver twist is crazy!!! people get soooo mad at him for fumbling korra and asami but like. can we be honest for a second. like can we be soooo forreal rn. you’d fumble them too. we all would.

I think this is actually my first time completing a drawing of him. Surprisingly.

mako is eldest daughter coded. the parentification trauma is real and wrote off, and this is why he's so misunderstood by a large chunk of fans.

Tbh for some odd reason Mako is just very.. female archetype coded in general. Biggest example being the love triangle. I don't know how to explain it properly. The way fandom treats him does sometimes feel like how people would treat female characters.

I think this side of him is made clear in books 3&4, but in books 1&2 he comes off as an entitled prick. It's taken years for me to get over how much I disliked him in the first two books.

The way he only treats Korra with respect when he finds out she's the Avatar, the way he talks about both her and Asami as objects for him to make decisions about, the cheating, the gaslighting Asami when she calls him out for cheating, PUSHING LIN BEIFONG. Man I'm getting mad just thinking about it all lol.

they're all messy teenagers. mako wasn't unique in making bad decisions.

are you just as mad at korra for kissing him without his consent? for korra coming into his workplace to yell at him and airbend his desk into a wall? an action lin beifong endorses because she tore up air temple island when teznin broke up with her. no one would laugh if mako did these things to either of them but they always seem to get a pass.

do you get mad about bolin kissing ginger without her consent? for both asami and bolin doing fuck all to help mako when he was framed by varrick?

bolin works for kuvira for three years but comes out the otherside because he did some good deeds but mako sacrifices himself to save republic city and he's still not good enough, he's not "redeemable" to fandom.

is it only mako that gets your ire because of the questionably written love triangle? he was indecisive and wishy-washy with korra and asami because he didn't want to hurt either of them which caused them all to get hurt anyway. he didn't do it because he had some master plan. he openly admits he messed up multiple times, both wu and tu call him out on it, and he apologizes to korra directly at the end of season 2 when they break up for real.

yet mako is the one that fandom holds to coals for over a decade about it. he grew and learned from his mistakes. korra and him literally have a whole ass bonding experience in season 4 that sorted their issues with each other from the previous season.

look people can have their opinions on mako. it's whatever. i'm not changing people's minds here but he's my favorite blorbo because i relate to him and fandom rips him to shreds. he's just some dude that fucked up at 18 with his interpersonal relationships. i'm glad my fuck ups at 18 aren't held against me just as badly.

Finally someone said it! I’m so tired of the Mako hate in this fandom. Like, yes, Mako fucked up, a lot. But he wasn’t the only one who made mistakes. Yet the entire fandom treats him like trash because of his mistakes, while completely overlooking the mistakes made by Korra, Bolin, and Asami. It’s so irritating to see him being treated like he’s the worst character ever, time and time again.
