is it just me or is the word "gatekeeping" is starting to sound a little "don't care how I want it now" around here? I tried to find out what gatekeeping really means, why we're all obsessed with being advertised to, and why gatekeeping might actually be good for us

i genuinely dont care if the creation of all media comes to a screeching halt btw i will very gladly live with no new movies no new tv shows no new anything for years if that's what it takes for the people who create them to be treated like human beings. i hope every other facet of the entertainment industry goes on strike too and i hope all the ones that havent unionised yet will. i want media creation to become completely impossible and i want the people who could make it possible again to hold out until they get every single thing they want. btw

If we can’t have chocolate without slavery, I’d rather not have chocolate.

If we can’t have games without crunch, I’d rather not have games.

If we can’t have movies and TV shows without running writers, actors, and crew into the dirt, I’d rather not have movies and TV shows.

If we can’t have two-day delivery without destroying delivery workers, I’d rather not have two-day delivery.

The fundamental change moving forward, if we want to live ethically and sustainably, is being willing to accept less. Giving up some luxuries so that the people who make those luxuries can do it at a more reasonable pace. Giving up some convenience so extra resources aren’t burned to be just a little bit faster.

let’s also talk about what we gain in addition to what we give up. Less cheap and on demand goods and entertainment could mean:

Less waste contributing to the climate crisis

Less advertising creating insecurities to encourage you to buy something new

Less labor exploitation. Better pay. Safer working conditions. More time to rest and care for each other

We must be willing to accept less because we deserve so much more:

The kind of life that doesn’t cause us constant distress that we have to drown with cheap and on demand goods and entertainment
