“Running allows me to go to a place that I can not access in modern society. It lets me tap into a part of my brain that can only be reached through such physical exhaustion and determination that running 10+ miles can create. If it were merely about staying in shape or looking good I’m not sure it would be as appeasing. Something about running for hours at a time, having emotional ups and downs, and getting to the point that your mind is cloudy but calm all in the course of a single run is addicting. You just can’t get that much pain and pleasure for free anywhere else”

The fact that women’s bodies work much like a fad, a self-evident fact, should be enough for even the most layman to recognize that women’s bodies are viewed as goods for consumption. In the 90s, very thin bodies were in. In the early 2000s big boobs and thin lips were a thing. Right now, I feel like it is about big butts and super small waists and big lips. Meanwhile, there has been no trendings for male bodies. Except acceptance that no one even asked for or needed, e.g., “dad bod”.

Just a friendly reminder for your fitness journey: Your muscles do not grow during exercise. Exercise is only the stimulus. The body strengthens the muscles while you are resting.

So make sure that you give 100% with rest, just like you would give 100% exercising.

Almost every day I look down at my legs on a run and imagine them long, lean, swiftly carrying me along and wish it were true. What do I look like when I run? A small, stump-like girl shuffling down the street? Why can’t I look like I glide effortlessly, like a distance runner?

Then I look back down at my legs and see their power. Who said short, thick legs weren’t built perfectly for running? These strong legs easily take me up miles of hills every day, they can run for hours without much exhaustion and can still run with speed. I don’t need people to comment “legs for days” or cry envy over being lean. I don’t need long, lanky legs when I am blessed with the awesome ones I have.

Love this ❤️❤️

The Racing Mentality

Sometimes I forget how important your mindset is when it comes to running.

When you’re on that starting line, you’re not thinking of the “extra 2 cookies you ate a couple nights ago”, or worrying about the fact that you “didn’t get enough sleep 3 days back.” You’re thinking about what is AHEAD of you, and the things that have prepared you for this race.

One person in the race could be the fastest or the most talented, but if they believe that dessert or lack of adequate sleep is going to make them lose, the next best person with the belief that they WILL be the best is going to succeed. Your body does what your mind tells it to.

For me, racing is all mental. I don’t look around and compare myself to others because, well, everyone is so different. Go out there and trust in yourself, give it everything you have and don’t think about insignificant “mistakes” you made that messed up a “perfect” training regimen.

At that point in the race when you’re struggling and everything starts to hurt, think about what you have done in the past that WILL get you across that finish line faster than ever before. Your mind controls your body, so go out there and tell your mind that you will run fast.
