Welp, @nailsinmywall and @skyeventide were chatting on twitter and woobiefied!Celegorm came up. And I’ve realized that I have two semi-elaborate Celegorm headcanon/interpretations spawned from attempts to make Celegorm less fucking tedious to me. I don’t think they quite make the cut for woobiefication, but they ARE marching in that direction. I think this at least qualified for meow-meowification.

Like all good headcanons, one revolves around Orome and one around Aredhel LOL. Honestly it’s all about motivation. Because bitches love to coddle a blorbo who does shitty things for “good” reasons.

(But also, if you are viscerally offended and are willing to have a polite discussion about it, I would like to know why. Like, I personally dig it because it adds depth to a fairly shallow in-text character, and also does something with the juicy Aredhel-Luthien parallels that idk if Jirt ever realized existed. And I don't think it objectively makes Celegorm any better or worse as a person, since it neither alters is canonical actions nor contradicts his reasons for them. The threat of forced marriage/sexual assault holds the same weight, whether the motive is desire alone, or desire plus revenge. And quite frankly it explains both a) why Celegorm would bother... soliciting Thingol for permission to force himself on Thingol's daughter??? And b) why Nerdanel's son and Aredhel's (and huan's and angrod's and aegnor's...) friend would choose to pursue a permanent bond with someone he genuinely desired by force. Like. Unless you like the fanon Celegorm-as-Gaston angle?? If you do, go for it! But I genuinely don't see why some folks have gotten so bent out of shape on this one.)

Very cute! Snakes can drink water in a more normal-looking way - but the cup setup is a little awkward, and anyway lots of snakes like to be a bit silly with it! I have several who like to drink water exclusively with their heads resting on the bottom of their water bowls!

this is true of pretty much all internal anatomy, because the real situation is sort of like if you stuffed a bunch of water balloons of different shapes, connected by tubes, into a bag, itd be really hard to tell whats going on! so you make things more orderly when you represent them, and the connections and lengths and stuff are correct. like the former image is what you get if you cut it out of someone's body and arrange it neatly (and also, if their system wasnt aberrant somehow, but most people's bodies are aberrant somehow. so what they show you is more of like an average of everyone's weird aberrations)

Okay but like while that is a cute translation, it shouldn't have been translated because baggin is a loan word that english got from Norwegian, and then kept using, transforming it into bag over time, while it pretty much fell out of use in Norwegian.

So like. They translated a word which was already Norwegian!!

However, translation is first and foremost about communication, and Norwegian is, despite its origins, not similar enough to Old Norse that baggi is a word most modern Norwegians would think of as Norwegian. Now, modern Norwegian has "reclaimed" the word bag from English, first as a slang word but later as an integrated part of everyday speech, but kept the English pronunciation /bæg/ instead of the more intuitively Norwegian /ba:g/ (similar to lag, vag, sag). Thus, the name Baggins might even, paradoxically, have sounded too modern for the fantasy setting in LotR, and I understand the translator's desire to replace it with something that sounded more appropriate to the setting and where the intuitive pronunciation would be unequivocally in line with standard Norwegian pronunciation rules so that one could avoid code-switching to an English pronunciation every time the name popped up.

I love those translations of Chinese tiktoks that go around because a) it’s shown me that the internet is the internet everywhere and when humans have the opportunity to get weird they will do it and b) the people translating these things have done the work to filter through all of the terrible videos on the Chinese internet to only show me the good ones and I am eternally grateful to them for that. They’re like the other people that repost tiktoks to tumblr but with even more work involved
