a ghost of lucas:   i love you,  so i’ll let you haunt me.   i love you,   so i will be burdened with your death as if you were still there.    i love you and it already feels like mourning,   like grief,    brittle and sparse   (her mother had told her that death was just a child and didn’t understand what it was taking–    sometimes,  it stole coins from your pockets,   and teeth from your mouth,  and hearts from your chest:    you cannot begrudge death its taking anymore than you could hate a child for wailing).       ‘‘     you could be my ghost sidekick and we could solve mysteries together.    but the big plot of the season is that you’re fading the entire time and i have to decide if i wanna let you go or not.   and i do at the end,  ‘cause letting go is apparently the healthy thing to do.   which i think is a stupid moral lesson,   by the way.     ’’     she lifts a hand to knock against his forehead.     ‘‘     and i could make money by showing you off to people,   meaning i’d make more than you.    ha.     ’’

PROMPTS INSPIRED BY HORROR FILMS / SERIES

  • 30 Days of Night:  Our muses live in Barrow, Alaska, which experiences a month of solid darkness every year. They are two of the few residents who stay behind during this time. This year the town is targeted by a group of monstrous vampires.
  • As Above, So Below:  Our muses are exploring the Catacombs of Paris, a tunnel collapse prevents them from going back. They encounter horrors, including cultists and spirits of dead loved ones as they go deeper. Slowly, they realize they are traveling through the levels of Hell.
  • Being Human:  Muse A is a vampire. Muse B is a werewolf. They decide to move in together and help each other live as close to normal human lives as they can. Of course, that’s easier said than done.
  • Cloverfield:  A giant monster attacks NYC; our muses flee from their apartment and must make their way through the city, avoiding the destruction. Along the way, they have to fight off smaller creatures that continuously attack them.
  • Daybreakers:  In a futuristic world where vampires are in control and outnumber humans, the blood supply is running out. Humans are captured and farmed and vampires are going rabid from lack of blood. Muse A is a vampire hematologist trying to find a substitute for human blood. Muse B is a human survivor that knows of a cure for vampirism.
  • Dexter:  Muse A is a serial killer with a code - they only kill other serial killers. Muse B is their partner/family member/friend/co-worker who has no idea about the double life Muse A lives.
  • Ghost Ship:  Our muses are part of a salvage crew that comes across a long-lost passenger ship. Once on the ship, they discover that it is haunted by the deceased guests and crew, as well as a demonic entity responsible for all their deaths.
  • Ginger Snaps:  One night our muses are attacked by a large animal. Muse A is badly scratched but heals quickly, over the next few weeks they begin to transform into a werewolf. As Muse A becomes more violent and dangerous, Muse B looks for a cure, hoping to find one before the next full moon.
  • In The Flesh: A full-blown zombie apocalypse has been avoided. Scientists have created a medication that returns consciousness to the undead, allowing them to remember their lives. The surviving undead, not killed by militias, have been rounded up and medicated, and reintroduced to society. Muse A is one of these zombies, struggling to return to their former life. Muse B is a former friend of theirs who was part of one of the local militias and doesn’t believe the zombies can be trusted.
  • Jennifers Body:  Muse A is killed in a human sacrifice gone wrong and comes back as a demon with a hunger for human flesh, they begin killing and eating people. Muse B knows that Muse A is responsible for all the recent deaths and vows to stop them.
  • Paranormal Activity:  Our muses live together. Muse A believes there is a ghostly presence in their house. Muse B decides to set up cameras to record the activity.
  • Pitch Black:  A deep space transporter crash-lands on a desolate planet circled by three suns. Our muses are among the survivors: They find out that the planet suffers a total eclipse every 22 years, which is when the hibernating, flesh-eating inhabitants awake and hunt, and the eclipse is about to begin.
  • Silence of the Lambs:  Muse A is an FBI agent working an active serial killer case. Muse B is a convicted serial killer serving a life sentence. It is believed that Muse B might have insight into the current case, so Muse a sent to interview them.
  • The Cabin in the Woods:  Our muses take a vacation to a remote cabin in the woods. After finding the basement full of odd objects, they unintentionally wake up ghoulish entities that are now out to kill them. But was it all really an accident or is there something more sinister at play?
  • The Devils Advocate:  Muse A is an aspiring defense lawyer who accepts a high-powered position at a New York law firm. Muse B is their spouse who becomes haunted by frightening demonic visions. Muse A is taken under the wing of the firms’ owner who Muse B is convinced is actually Satan.
  • The Exorcist:  Muse A is possessed by a demon, their family calls in Muse B to perform an exorcism.
  • The Lure:  Muse A is a mermaid, and Muse B is a member of a rock band. The two meet one night when Muse B is relaxing at the beach. Muse A accompanies Muse B back to the nightclub where they perform, and Muse A begins singing there as well. Muse B becomes jealous that Muse A’s act is more popular, meanwhile, Muse A hungers for blood and begins killing club patrons.
  • The Purge:  Our muses are trapped away from their home on the night of the purge - a night where all crime, including murder, is legal for 12 hours. They must try and survive the night.
  • The Ritual:  Our muses are on a hike through the wilderness, a wrong turn takes them off the trail and into the forest where they begin to encounter strange phenomena, including dead animals hanging from branches, symbols carved into trees, horrific nightmares, and blackouts. They realize they are being stalked by an ancient evil.
  • The Strangers:  While staying at an isolated vacation home, our muses are stalked and terrorized by masked criminals who infiltrate the home.

the double - sided coin of hope, ever spinning. heads or tails   (  ?  )   he has learned to expect the worst   :   whether that makes him a cynic or a realist is yet to be known. the plummet is so gradual that it really feels like more of a slope, but once life’s enjoyment ceases   —   and seizes   —   the throes of that rut are a trench nigh impossible to dig one’s self out of. lucas wades the cusp of that rut, forlorn and forgotten, and forgetting himself in turn.   ❛   i’m starting to think light is rationed out to the rich nowadays.   ❜   humour so often masks the boy’s tells, douses the flames enough to get by. this time the attempt seeps like gasoline through his teeth, a desperate bleat that only betrays his lowest. 

❛   i don’t remember the last time—   ❜   his mind flits back to a hundred memories, happier days, voices of higher pitch, shrieks of laughter and muffled giggles, melt - in - the - mouth dinners to come home to, hugs that didn’t feel like a life ring long thrown out to sea. they are all distorted in his reminiscence, like stained glass long since faded, the pigments washed out, the edges cracked. ❛   the last time i was happy.   really happy.   ❜

morality is a compass thrown askew,   flipped upside - down so to speak. it is a woeful act to be submerged in the fog of war, not knowing north from south   /   light from dark   /   right from wrong. they have each had their tests and come out the other side different people.   maybe steve more than most,   his former body nothing but an empty exoskeleton.   brittle and hollow.   newly emerged, the prodigy   :   soft, spongy and malleable.   sometimes change is good.

❛   don’t beat yourself up about it.   the fact you’re even worried about doing the right thing in the first place tells you everything you need to know. you and me   —   we’re human.   sometimes we get it wrong.   ❜   it’s an easy concept for him to grasp   :   he thinks back to when jane was eleven   (   a weapon   :   an unknown, a number, a threat   ),   hair shorn and hospital gown muddied. skepticism had clouded his judgment. yet while hindsight is a beautiful thing, he stands by his guns.   intent is the true measure of mettle.
