tfw you visit your childhood home with your boyfriend while your parents are away for the weekend, so you can take back the space where you were hurt and make it yours again

...is the excuse I'm going with for why I got to 3rd base sneaking around my parents' house like a dumb teenager, which I never got to do as an actual teenager

alas, my mom has alarmingly good detective skills, so we couldn't stay long (and couldn't do half the shenanigans I otherwise would've), lest she realize I brought a Guest and start asking wayyyy too many questions I don't want to answer ever

Oh my god???????

I hate these people so fucking much. Our country is crumbling in literally every way - infrastructure, childcare, schools, healthcare and hospitals, etc and we're in one of the biggest cost of living increases ever homelessness is increasing and will continue. Covid is still a thing. But no this is what they're spending our hard earned tax dollars that make up their salary for

Holy shit. The Israeli whistleblower story CNN just broke is insane. I cannot believe what I’m reading

Rare firsthand accounts by Israeli whistleblowers cast light on the horrific conditions in the Sde Teiman torture camp in Naqab Desert. Palestinians are stripped down, blindfolded, forced in diapers, and forbidden from speaking. They are subjected to beatings and mental degradation regularly. So much depravity that has gone unseen. Doctors performing procedures outside of their expertise, amputations due to zip-typing of abductees’ wrists, having large dogs unleashed on them at night. Being fed food through straws. I can’t believe it. I am truly in shock. And this is just one whistleblower accounting of this. Who knows what else is happening beyond our knowledge

My heart is breaking into a million pieces

💚 it is not reasonable, fair, or right to encourage censorship of properly tagged squicky, icky, and or triggering fanworks because new users may not know how to tag block, blacklist, filter, block, and in general use the provided tools available to curate their own experiences yet

💚 it is not reasonable, fair, or right to expect fan creatives to stop using terms and tags because new users may have not yet learned what those terms or tags mean (e.g. "dead dove: do not eat", "whump", "yandere", and but limited to "Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings")

💚 is is not reasonable, fair, or right to expect fan creatives to curate and cater to new users by not making squicky, icky, and or triggering when those new users can learn how to curate their own online experiences

💚 new users on any site are solely responsible for learning how to fully use that site before actually using it, and learning what terms and tags they do not understand mean before engaging with fanworks using those terms and tags

💚 new users who fail to learn how to use the site their using, and or who fail to educate themselves on the meaning of terms and tags they do not understand before proceeding, even if done out of genuine ignorance or forgetfulness, are solely responsible for any negative experiences they have

💚 fan creatives who make squicky, icky, and or triggering fanworks are not bad people for making those kinds of fanworks

💚 fan creatives who make squicky, icky, and or triggering fanworks are not responsible for new users and their experiences with the site and fanworks

💚 fan creatives are not responsible for teaching, warning, or otherwise educating new users on how the site works or what certain terms and tags mean

💚 new users are solely responsible for their own online experiences on new sites. that includes learning how things work, what things mean, and curating sites they use for their own personal sense of comfort, morals, and ethics

new users who don't know how to tag block, blacklist, filter, block users, etc yet, or worse; don't WANT to do that and take it out on writers/artists/others instead, may want to hold on to their parents' hand a little while longer before being online by themselves. we're not here to baby you when you're in our spaces.

Wish there was a better social shorthand for “I’m sure they’re a lovely person in their own way but we are so baseline incompatible that being around them longer than five minutes makes me feel like exploding into smithereens.”

everyone saying "art doesn't need to be perfect" hasn't taken into account the art monster, the monster that comes and kills you if art doesn't look exactly like it did in your head

Writing a novel when you imagine all you stories in film format is hard because there’s really no written equivalent of “lens flare” or “slow motion montage backed by Gregorian choir”

You can get the same effect of a lens flare with close-detail descriptions, combined with breaks to new paragraphs.

Your slow-motion montage backed by a Gregorian choir can be done with a few technques that all involve repetition.

First is epizeuxis, the repeating of a word for emphasis.

Example:

Falling. Falling. Falling. There was nothing to keep Marie from plunging into the rolling river below. She could only hope for a miracle now, that she would come out alive somehow despite a twenty-foot drop into five-foot-deep water.

Then there’s anaphora, where you write a number of phrases with the same words at the beginning.

There were still mages out there living in terror of shining steel armor emblazoned with the Sword of Mercy.
There were still mages out there being forced by desperation into the clutches of demons.
There were mages out there being threatened with Tranquility as punishment for their disobedience, and the threats were being made good upon.
Mages who had attempted to flee, but knew nothing of the outside world and were forced to return to their prison out of need for sustenance and shelter.
Mages who only desired to find the families they were torn from.
Mages who only wanted to see the sun.

This kind of repetition effectively slows the pace of your writing and puts the focus on that small scene. That’s where you get your slow pan. The same repetition also has a subtle musicality to it depending on the words you use. That’s where you get the same vibe as you might get from a Gregorian choir.

Damn I made relatable reblog- bait post and writer Tumblr went hard with it. This is legitimately very good advice.

For more neat tricks (aka figures of rhetoric) like epizeuxis and anaphora, read THE ELEMENTS OF ELOQUENCE by Mark Forsyth. It’s both educational and delightful, not to mention overflowing with wry wit. Great book.

Read the first pages of some Discworld books to see even more direct ways in which cinematic openings can be done in print.

very proud of the currently-growing generation’s ability to take consent seriously

incredibly disturbed by the way some of them have really vocally decided that consent culture applies to literally everything, up to and including other people’s right to literally just exist in a public space

it starts with something like “all nudity is sexual” or “wearing kinky clothes is inherently a sexual act” with the accompanying “since it’s sexual it requires consent from all involved parties, and seeing it is a form of involvement, so you need my consent to go out in public where i might see you” and once you start with that it has historically been – i’m as leery of slippery-slope arguments as anyone else but it *has historically, repeatedly been demonstrated* – a very, very short trip from there to policing gender expressions and etc and you know, we still live in a deeply homophobic and transphobic society, the whole thing where people are trying to make it illegal to exist in public while trans is … a thing, in real life, right now? and your “wearing a collar in public is an act of bondage sex to which i do not consent” bullshit is absolutely 100% in support of the evangelical puritans’ “existing while queer is an offense against god. jesus did not consent to you wearing clothing inconsistent with the gender i believe you should be presenting” i’m sure there are a number of people who KNOW those are the same thing with the same end goals/results and are doing it on purpose; i know that there are in fact bad-faith actors repurposing social justice language in service of oppression, you can watch it happen, see also all the conservatives currently parroting “my body my choice” as they endanger everyone around them during a global pandemic. but i think some of them are just naive and genuinely believe themselves to be both correct and leftist, and like. nope

it wasn’t all that long ago that people were in fact regularly getting arrested for wearing clothing inconsistent with their assumed gender. like it was illegal to cross-dress and the cops would go out and arrest trans women and trans men and butch lesbians and effeminiate gays, because of trans- and homophobia, and wearing the wrong clothes was literally the offense used as an excucse to enforce those -phobias. i am not eager to return to that in any way. you cannot argue that your imagined rules against “sexual clothing” would somehow not be used against trans people because, get this, there ARE people in the world for whom cross-dressing is a sex thing, even though the vast majority of trans people are not doing it for any such reason. if you think it’s acceptable to literally police the actions of everyone based on the fact that there are people who might get off on it, then your beliefs are, in actual practical fact of effect, in support of arresting trans people for failing to conform to gender presentation

My boyfriend just started reading Dungeon Meshi, and I have rarely seen my sister so happy. She was in a bad mood until I told her, and now she's practically vibrating and talking about DunMeshi and I just love them both to death ❤
