What happened with the underworld poster contest?
Oh lord, where do I begin…
So the poster for the Underworld arc was released in early January of the season 5 hiatus. I had gotten a root canal that day, so I remember it very clearly. As you’re likely well aware, the 5B poster was similar to past posters with the apple in the foreground, however since this arc was meant to be about saving Killian from the Underworld, his face was logically behind the apple.
Naturally, Hookers and CSers alike were thrilled by this. The first poster of the season had Emma’s face, and now this poster had Hook’s? It was truly shaping up to be a CS-filled season, and it’s always nice to see both of your favs receiving such prominent attention. It made perfect sense to me and many others that they would have a poster of Hook for 5B since he was the whole reason they were going to the Underworld in the first place. However, this logic was completely lost on the rest of the fandom, and quite a bit of nastiness ensued as a result.
It started with the initial outrage of the anti-Hook crowd. How dare they give Hook his own poster!? So they took to twitter and began bitching and moaning at the writers that it was somehow insulting that they put Hook’s face on the poster instead of literally any other character. From there, some $Qers got the bright idea to start a fun little contest where people redo the poster and post them on twitter. At face value, the contest seemed good-natured enough. But then they announced the rules of the contest, which were as follows: 1) Any poster edits submitted could not include Hook at all, and 2) No CSers were allowed to participate. Anyone who attempted to break these rules were ridiculed mercilessly. Literally every part of the fandom partook in this contest. Naturally $Qers were at the forefront with their submissions, but right behind them were RBers, 0Qers, and even Snowing shippers, all there to support this exclusionary and hate-filled event started by some of the most vile people I’ve ever come into contact with. It felt like an all out attack on CSers and Hookers from the rest of the OUAT fandom, and this is all following their successful attempt to trend #StopeOnceUponAHook. It really kinda shattered my views of any part of the OUAT fandom that didn’t ship CS. After that I just assumed that everyone outside the CS fandom hated us and I stopped seeking any connections or friendships outside of our community.
And that’s pretty much it. It really sucked, because that was supposed to be such a great time for Hookers, Ugly Ducklings, and CSers, but instead it ended up feeling like the rest of the fandom hated us. I quickly found a way to get over that though. Since then I feel pretty immune to hate. There’s very little that anyone can say that genuinely bothers me anymore.
I missed this whole thing when it happened. I’m confused. I’m guessing no one cared in season 4 when Elsa was behind the frozen apple? And she wasn’t even a regular. That’s my favorite poster though. Those eyes . .
Yeah, they only threw a fit because it was Hook. If it had been literally anyone else no one would have blinked. But giving Hook any major focus whatsoever has always been a big no no for them. Unless it’s Wish Hook of course.
I recall people not liking the Hook poster because #MustStopOUATHook but i didn’t recall the contest that dissed out CS fandom. Maybe I just ignored it cause all the other ships had sad stories at this period in the series and had nothing better to do.
Ah, good times.
If I remember correctly, the people responsible for this contest later said that CSers could participate but could not do a CS/Hook poster. And I mean… why would I want to take part in a campaign against half of my otp where I am forbidden for doing stuff related to my otp? Flawless logic of theirs, really.
This is the moment that people who came a little later into the fandom got a real taste of how hated we were/are, but I remember when CS was just starting at the beginning of season 2, the rest of the fandom pretty much forbade us to post CS stuff on the general tags and literally called us “the cancer of the fandom”. They never liked us at all, but with the poster thing they went way out of line to prove it.
wow ok so im not a part of the ouat fandom anymore (could you possibly guess why???) and i left in around season 4 because i just didn’t want to deal with the bullshit anymore, i even stopped watching the show entirely. i had no idea this happened. Back in the old days of cs there was always something we were doing wrong to the rest of the fandom but i never in my dreams thought it would spiral like this. what a fucking toxic fandom. glad i left. for those of you still following this blog, i love you guys. you got me through some serious shit and taught me a lot about myself. but damn. this is messed up.

I still don’t buy that even if Emma was raised “without challenges” she’d be as weak as she was portrayed. Snow and David were raising the next ruler. I still call bullshit that this was the version they would have raised. What a disappointing episode and a disservice to Emma, Snow, and David.
Methinks that the backlash over the Emma assassination and Regina’s ultimate whitewash was completely unexpected by the writers so now they are on defensive mode doing damage control.

i cant believe theyve dedicated so much time to having emma let love into her life and let her believe that loving people is better than being alone and yet in this episode from Hell they made it seem like Emma was weak because she had constant love her entire life
