Chapter 14: Tortured, Tangled Hearts

Chapter Summary: Riley and Madeline face-off. Bertrand tries to involve himself in the investigation again and Maxwell offers Riley support. Liam and Madeline discuss the events of the day and find themselves in a situation neither expected. Liam decides it's time to face the one person he's been avoiding. Drake and Riley both go off in search of solitude and find themselves in each others company. Despite some of their conversation being difficult, they carefully navigate their new, fragile friendship and continue to find themselves drawn to one another. With the support of her friends, Riley heads back to Applewood to get a jump on investigating and they find a few clues sooner than they were expecting.

A/N: I had hoped to stay on a timeline posting chapters to both my WIPs every two weeks but…best laid plans 🤦🏻‍♀️ Things keep going sideways and the stress is getting to me, so for now it’s back to writing and posting when I can and hoping I don’t let it get away from me. A/N 2: I kept this in the first person from Riley’s POV in keeping with the style of ‘Promise Me’ but it does jump between present and past tense with Riley thinking back on the time between where that story ended and where she is now. I love this scene in canon and I love this SO much more ❤️❤️. In canon, once you’ve chosen your LI there are points where it still feels like the relationship is just ‘friendly’ instead of romantic so I love seeing the deeper connection between MC and Drake that canon missed the mark on!

A/N: This is set 4 years after my canon compliant series, ‘Not Quite Cinderella’ and is sort of a ‘What if’ Riley didn’t stay after the end of Book 2. It can be read as a stand alone, but just things to know from the series: 1) Riley’s given name is Emily, she changed it at 18, 2) Riley’s mom passed away a year before the social season so Riley was still processing her grief on the one-year anniversary that occurred during their time at Applewood in my series.

A/N 2: First person is not my usual style so…hope it’s okay :) and please forgive any errors (grammatical, tense, etc.)

A/N - I am trying to get myself on a schedule for writing. I am hoping to take 2 weeks between updates, using 1 week per WIP to write a chapter and then post them together on the same day. I overshot that a little this time (18 days) and a prompt challenge here might slow down the next chapters slightly but at least I have a goal I’m working toward. Chapter Summary: Riley finally gets her chance to talk to Liam. It’s a mostly open and honest conversation and goes as well as she could have hoped but she doesn’t leave it feeling any better. The investigative team, including a new member, once again meets up to discuss evidence and leads, meaning Riley has to face Drake for the first time since he left Lythikos. In difficult moments of their meeting, Drake steps up to support her but things once again get tense when they find themselves alone. Riley gets ready for the engagement party with her best friend and arrives feeling calm and composed but the drama ramps up quickly when she sees both Madeline and Liam.

UBMY- I am trying SO hard to keep Liam somewhat redeemable 🤣🤣. I feel like canon clings to the “perfect prince” image which I get why they do it, it’s a fairytale romance but even princes/kings have flaws so I’m straddling this fine line of trying to show he’s flawed without changing the character entirely. Riley and Drake are making some progress and they’ll keep making baby steps. Riley is gonna hold her own with Maddie…I hope to have that chapter posted VERY soon!

CFTA- I completely agree with you! Liam should have absolutely been stepping up and saying something about how some people treat Drake! I love that Drake stands up for himself and Riley though, and Riley’s got his back too!

If you haven’t read that one, this one won’t make much sense. There is a time jump between that story and this one, and this is long so I could wrap this up without turning it into a mini-series :)

A/N 2: I kept this in the first person from Riley’s POV in keeping with the style of ‘Promise Me’ but it does jump between present and past tense with Riley thinking back on the time between where that story ended and where she is now. Please forgive any errors in grammar or tense, as this is not my usual style.

Outside it’s a rainy day but there is just enough light from the setting sun to allow me to catch my reflection in the window. In the mirrored image, the tears running down my cheeks blend with the raindrops on the window. Just beyond the glass, life goes on and the world moves forward, but inside these walls, I feel like time is standing still.

A/N: This is set 4 years after my canon compliant series, ‘Not Quite Cinderella’ and is sort of a ‘What if’ Riley didn’t stay after the end of Book 2. It can be read as a stand alone, but just things to know from the series: 1) Riley’s given name is Emily, she changed it at 18, 2) Riley’s mom passed away a year before the social season so Riley was still processing her grief on the one-year anniversary that occurred during their time at Applewood in my series.

The cool wind pushes my hair back as I walk along the familiar path, every step taking me deeper into the past. It’s been years since I’ve been here; everything is different.
