Do you have any cursed sloth facts? I'll give you one for free: there used to be 3 m tall sloths, but they are extinct now:(

I see your Giant Ground Sloth and raise you Thalassocnus, the one and only marine sloth!

yes, ‘marine sloth’. that was a thing, once.

Thalassocnus was a genus of ancient sloths that lived on the coasts of South America around 7 million years ago. They were big animals that could reach over 8 feet in length, and probably lived much like marine iguanas do today: living on the shoreline and diving down to the shallow coastal seabed to feast upon the sweet sweet seagrass and other vegetation that grew there.

however while you might not expect to find a fucking giant sloth underwater, local sealife quickly got used to it: Thalassocnus was often the prey of both sharks and giant hyperpredatory early sperm whales!

I cannot overstate how fucking weird these animals were. there has been nothing like them since they went extinct, and there probably never will be again. a weird little spark went out of the world when they left us.

Stardew Valley is wild cause it’s this fun wholesome little game where you raise animals and grow crops and get married but it also has monsters and dwarves and the mayor and rancher lady are secretly fucking and it’s heavily implied the shop owner’s daughter is actually an illegitimate child his wife had with the local wizard and there’s a note from your grandpa saying he’s gonna return from the grave and visit you on the dawn of your third year in the valley

Don’t forget that the country you’re in is being invaded by a much larger nation, one of your fellow townspeople has PTSD from being tortured in a POW camp and it’s causing him to lash out at his wife, one of the marriage candidates lives in an abusive household, another one is suicidally depressed, the mayor is using taxpayers’ money to build solid gold statues of himself while the infrastructure crumbles but everybody’s so disenfranchised with politics that nobody ever stands against him for election and, oh yes, the main plot of the game is that a supermarket is trying to destroy the town so that they can stripmine the local area.

The argument Pinto makes is that the story and the doll normalize 24-hour surveillance in the mind of a child, which makes them susceptible to more passively accept police-state surveillance as adults.

“I don’t think the elf is a conspiracy and I realize we’re talking about a toy,” Pinto told The Post. “It sounds humorous, but we argue that if a kid is okay with this bureaucratic elf spying on them in their home, it normalizes the idea of surveillance and in the future restrictions on our privacy might be more easily accepted.”

It’s based in a theory that was developed by Jeremy Bentham and popularized by Michel Foucault in which students, prisoners, factory workers and others were thought to function better (for whatever value of better) in a system called a panopticon, in which an individual is potentially under surveillance 24-hours a day, but never actually KNOWS whether or not he or she is being surveilled.

Pinto said she’s not the first person to be troubled by Elf on the Shelf’s surveilling. She’s said parents routinely contact her to say they changed the rules of the game after it made their families uneasy. And many kids, she said, often intuitively feel like spying and being a tattletale is wrong.
“A mom e-mailed me and told me that the first day they read the elf book and put the elf out, her daughter woke up crying because she was being watched by the elf,” Pinto recounted. “They changed the game so it wouldn’t scare the child.”

In addition to the problem of normalizing surveillance in the mind of a child, this also forces the child into a situation where they never feel like they are free to simply be themselves; they are forced to be “on their best behavior” at all times, unable to relax and make mistakes and do the job of growing up and being a child, because they never know if the elf is spying on them, ready and waiting to report back to Santa Claus that they’ve been bad.

My co-worker got Elf on the Shelf for her four-year-old daughter last year, and was so freaked out by her daughter’s sudden and complete change in behaviour (uncharacteristically worried and anxious, while trying to be on her ‘best’ behaviour that she never kept up for family or at school) that she stuffed Elf in the garbage after a week, telling the daughter that the Elf had to go back to the North Pole to help Santa with Christmas.

Also read the paper linked above, it’s a good one.

This creepy bastard is making a popularity revival this year and I don’t think it’s coincidental.

UGH “HATSUNE MIKU WROTE HARRY POTTER” I SWEAR TO GOD YOU CANNOT DIVORCE HARRY POTTER FROM THE RACIST TRANSMISOGYNISTIC ANTISEMITIC AUTHOR ITS IN THE TEXT STOP DOING THIS SHIT

before yall go “where is it” here’s a few examples off the top of my head!

racism: the entire spew story arc wherein jkr writes about her slave race that loves slavery and hermione is considered weird and to be causing harm by trying to end said slavery

transmisogyny: girls are allowed in the boys dorm rooms, but boys are not allowed in the girls dorm rooms. this becomes incredibly insidious when you know what her beliefs are

antisemitism: every description of snape, the entire existence of the goblins, “goldstein”

you can look up any of these things for more details i am not going into it the point is stop trying to “divorce” works from their creators when it turns out they are bigoted, because their views are definitely there within their works and especially when these messages are being taught to children it’s harmful to pretend these things aren’t there and that the media should be consumed uncritically “because miku made it”

worth mentioning that rita skeeter is extremely trans-coded in goblet of fire, a book that is primarily about characters deceiving others with their appearances
