TA Mode

@shesasurvivor and I were kvetching about the lack of comprehensive reading skills we’ve seen lately, and after reading an incredible post by @lunaescribe that SAS sent me detailing how fandom seems to have transformed the way we read I’ve realized that—hey! My reading comprehension skills have steadily descended down the shitter too! And I was a fucking pro, I tell you. When I was in eighth grade I was a TA for ninth grade English and I continued to TA in college. But somewhere along the line I stopped reading. And when I did read, I didn’t read actively, or read works that challenged me. And I let my comprehensive skills sit on a shelf in the back of my brain next to high school French. I’ve been telling myself I burned myself out in grad school. Well ma’am, you’re six years out from grad school. You gave your brain a rest and now it’s all memes and TikToks.

The great thing about brains is they’re really good at relearning! It’s time to dust off those old synapses and get back to feeding the ol’ noggin something other than viral dance crazes. I’m going to try to document my journey here. Who knows if I’ll get any farther than this post because honestly, the brain is pretty mushy right now and the apathy, she is very real. But I’m gonna try. I’m not asking anyone to stick around for the possible ride because I’m really only doing this for myself.

I guess the reason I’m even telling anyone this is because this page still has a strangely large amount of followers for someone who only posts once every two years. And I’m letting you know now that I haven’t doodled a damn thing in all that time. I said I was getting back on the horse, I gave it a go, again—massive apathy going for the past five years! Probably not gonna be any silly doodles happening on this page. You’re not gonna hurt my feelings if you go (;

So let’s see if the TA is still in there somewhere.

Those who cast stones maybe shouldn’t crib whole sections from other people’s fics... (literally never here but still getting the tea 🍵 )

Hey there @everlarkficexchange, I don’t know your policy on accepting prompts, but this here is the exact synopsis of Across the Stars, a fic @shesasurvivor wrote in 2015. Like not a passing resemblance or a broad topic. This is word-for-word the plot of her fic.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention @triplebigday. I think I read Across the Stars when it first came out, but it was several years ago and, to be honest, I’m not a big SW fan so I kind of forgot about it.

You’re absolutely right, though. The prompt is practically a copy-paste of the plot. So, here’s the thing, it’s true that many of our prompts bear some resemblance to one another and to other fics. That’s just normal. We’re requesting stories about a particular universe and most people want to read the same tropes.

However, this prompt crosses a line. Across the Stars is a crossover Fic that features an uncommon pairing of fandoms, and the prompt is WAY too detailed.

@shesasurvivor, I’m sorry for not realizing it sooner. I’ll remove the prompt from the general list and talk to the writer who chose it.

For anyone out there who hasn’t read Across the Stars, but who might be intrigued by the idea, you can find it HERE.

Sorry to @everlarkficexchange for not immediately reblogging this when I read it this morning! The issue has been resolved with the utmost kindness and a lovely link to @shesasurvivor’s story Across The Stars (Which I neglected to include myself, so big kudos to @everlarkficexchange!) I’m reblogging to emphasize that the fic exchange takes plagiarism seriously and is 1000% on the up and up (not that I ever thought they weren’t!) I’m going to be deleting my original post so that it doesn’t get spread around further!

Hi. I would definitely be interested in purchasing some of your art. I checked Etsy. From what I could find, comic panels were listed there between $4 to $16 (USD). Hope that helps.

Avatar

$4 was about the range I was looking at! Thanks for the extra legwork btw! I was planning to set up an Etsy in the new year for my crafting stuff so I think I’ll do the postings there, but tumblr will be the first to know when I throw stuff up there!

Yes, definitely sell them, but I have no idea what to sell them for! Do you have sizes of what they typically are?

Avatar

Nothing fancy—most are standard 8 1/2x11 art paper w/ copics color

So, like, hypothetically...

I’m looking to make some space and mayhaps a few bucks and I’ve got alllllll these original comics...would there be any interest in people buying my original Hunger Games comics? What do you think would be a fair price? (If I’m doing this I’m not putting them up for an insane price. This ain’t high art. But I also don’t want to devalue myself as an artist.)

Let me know what you think!

“…we have a 10-word bio in the program because there are so many people in the show. the 10 words i wrote are, ‘this is for all those whose shoulders i stand on.’ when i sing ‘go the distance’ i think about all the black men who have been enslaved, incarcerated, assassinated - i think about them. there is a hero inside all of them. it’s the most empowering moment i’ve ever had on stage.” - jelani alladin on playing hercules.

Peeta Mellark, drama queen of the century. first hunger games interview? “Because she came here with me” declares his love live on tv. he puts on the sad puppy face, but I’m not fooled, homeboy lives for the drama. second interview? “If not for the baby” the capital goes into a literal RIOT. so many clown wigs are snatched. not only does Peeta know exactly what he did, he LIVES for it

Peeta, after dropping those lines live on television:

I am in need of a new username here. I mean I suppose not a *need,* but if I’m going to pop stuff up here sporadically and it’s not all thg related...I guess even if it IS all thg related...

Ramblings aside. I’ve outgrown this moniker. I need me a new one.

“Where Peeta’s child could be safe.”

I don’t…like that? I can understand Katniss’ own qualms or intital hesitance towards motherhood but this line seems weird and off to me? Peeta didn’t force her to have kids, so you would think she would refer to the baby as “our child” or even “a child” rather than “Peeta’s child.” Especially since we know she wants kids just not immediately.

It makes me vaguely uncomfortable.

If she was saying this post Mockingjay it would make me uncomfortable too for the reasons you’ve listed, but in context, she is in the midst of the arena in the Quarter Quell dreaming of a world where she sacrifices herself so Peeta can go on to live a happy life. With, presumably, a child. But it would only be his, because in her mind, she’s dead in that world.

I don’t find it uncomfortable in that sense. I’ll talk more about this line when we get to this part in the reread because I love it so completely for the exact linguistic thing you point out: it is Peeta’s child, but it’s also hers too … she just doesn’t know it yet. I honestly forget she’s not pregnant for real at this point in the book because of the tenderness with which she phrases this whole bit. I forget she isn’t dreaming of a world where she escapes and can have their baby. I always have to go “oh right, that was fake.”

Yeah, she’s phrasing it this way because she doesn’t think she’s going to be alive much longer, and therefore Peeta would have children with someone else eventually.

I have always read it with the implication that she does want it to be hers, though.
