Ava allowed a tiny smile at his question, thinking there were probably plenty of people who didn’t like her, but she tried not to dwell on it. She listened to him talk about his ex, frowning faintly. “Confuse her how?” she asked curiously, before adding quickly, “you don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.”

“No, no it’s okay.” he shook his head at her quick addition to the question. “I just expressed feelings for her that can be hard for people not like me to understand sometimes.”

“To the untrained, yes. Back in the days of old when it was easier to hide in plain sight death was the only end to feeding. It wasn’t considered all that big of a deal, especially when you took into consideration the type of people we were put onto earth for. My kind of demon aren’t here to tempt the everyman so to speak. I am built out of thousands of years of pain and injustice and the answer to many cries. When I kill it’s because I know they’ll be going to hell, not because I want them to join my ranks but because I know they’ll suffer.”

Gabi didn’t want to dwell on this. The whole thing was too complicated and upsetting in different ways. It was overwhelming. “I think I’m going to head home,” she said, moving to stand. “This is just … a lot to think about. I need to think. I’m sorry.”

“Yeah, yeah of course” he nodded, moving to stand as well. August didn’t want her to go, but he also knew he couldn’t make her stay, even if the chinese food was now only a couple minutes away. “I’ll see you or I’ll call you later.” he said as he got the door for her, shutting it behind her once she’d gone. He took a step back from the door, really hoping he hadn’t just somehow accidentally fucked everything up again.
“I got help from someone else behind his back, and I think that hurt him,” Ava admitted. “I’m not entirely sure how to fix things, but I want to. It’s … hard to read him. Since he’s a psychic too, he knows how to shut himself off from me, so I didn’t think he’d care that much. Honestly, half the time I don’t know if he even likes me that much.” Ava sighed softly. “Do you want to talk about your thing?” she offered after a moment.

“Have you asked him why he was hurt by it?” August asked, years of therapy had taught him to try and listen to the other person’s side, especially if you’d hurt them in some way. There was also the whole ‘people are allowed to be upset’ thing, but August didn’t believe that to be a hard and fast. It was like saying the customer is always right. No, sometimes the customer is just an entitled dick. “What kind of asshole wouldn’t like you?” he asked with a grin and nudged her a little. “Oh well, it’s just some stuff with my ex. I think I confuse her...maybe. I know she’s gotten better, but I still don’t think she fully understands the way I feel. The way things work for me.”
“No. Not even when they die. Apparently it’s quite enjoyable.” Ruby hadn’t killed anyone in a while but that didn’t mean she wasn’t still capable. “You probably wouldn’t notice it was a big deal till after, unless there’s something else about you that throws off the normal routine.”

“Well, as far as I know there’s nothing else about me that would do that.” Even with living with it as long as he had, August still didn’t know all of the ins and outs of it. Only the things he’d managed to learn on his own, such as his inability to be effected by fire. “Is death a usual side effect?”
“It’s fine. I mean, construction has begun so it won’t be long now until it’s done,” Gabi admitted. This was another point of uncertainty: what was she going to do once she didn’t have a reason to stay in Wildemount? “Then I’ll … have to move on to the next project.”

“Yeah, I - I guess that’s right.” August hadn’t really thought about it, even as someone who had once lived a similar life when it came to his former job. Only staying in a place til their job there was complete, and then heading on to the next spot.
“Come on - come on - “August watched the screen intently, leaning a little closer and almost knocking his drink over in the process, “One more - one more. YEEEEES!” he let out a shout of victory, forgetting for a moment that he was currently sitting in a public space, and there were others around.
“I read energies because I feed off of them. My abilities spark certain responses out of people which leads to easier feeding. Sometimes I just have to be close to a person to trigger a response. It’s usually elation, arousal, excitement. Then I can take that energy. You don’t do that. I mean, not on any significant level. Which is why I said you wouldn’t be targeted. Not by my kind. Not by anyone who feeds on energy. They simply can’t with you. It wouldn’t be sustainable.”

“Does it hurt them?” he asked, not out of judgement, but just curiosity. There were still plenty of things he didn’t know about others that existed as part of the supernatural world. “Well, I guess that’s good to know then. I’m not sure how much I’d like being fed off of.”
“Not great, honestly,” Ava admitted after a moment. “My boyfriend had to leave town, my mentor isn’t speaking to me, and I’m stuck in a quiet house by myself again.” She paused, shaking her head. “But I’m doing the best I can with it. How about you?”

“Sorry to hear about that.” he said as she mentioned her boyfriend having to leave town, and the stuff with her mentor. “What happened with your mentor?” he asked, fully prepared for her to not want to talk about it, but putting the question out there anyways incase she did. “Things are..okay, I think. I’m not entirely sure, actually.” he still wasn’t sure exactly where he and Gabi stood on things.
“ … I don’t know how to help you with that,” Gabi admitted. “I don’t know of any therapists in town, though I’m sure they have them.” She shifted uncomfortably beside him. She didn’t like the topic of therapy. She’d been sent to the school counselor many times as a kid and young teen and they never knew how to help her. Sometimes, they only angered her even more.

“It’s fine” he shook his head a little “It’s not really your problem to have to deal with.” he added, noticing her uncomfortable shifting. “so how’s everything with the museum coming along?” he asked, quickly moving the topic onto something else.
Ruby placed her hand over his and pushed her influence onto him, keeping a close eye on his face for any reaction. Once she’d done that she sought out the pulse of energy that all beings have and just as her senses had picked up, his seemed to be encased in something. It wasn’t solid, she could coax a little energy through but it was too much work to realistically consider someone of his nature a food source. “Interesting. Whatever you are makes you resistant to my abilities. Not completely but enough that no one would ever target you.”

“and what kind of abilities would those be?” he asked, curiously. He’d never expected he would be resistant to anything supernatural, other than phoenix fire. She was wrong, though, he had been targeted by someone with magic, but that had also been before the changes happened, so maybe that didn’t exactly count. “other than reading people.”
“Ah, yeah, I hear that’s a good thing to try,” Gabi said with a half-hearted smirk. “I never tried it, honestly. I just threw myself into my degree and my career.” That was probably why she still struggled with anger issues even now.

“It is. She taught me more productive ways to channel my anger. Of course I am in the market for a new one.” The woman who had been his therapist for years had recently retired from her practice. “It was nice having one that didn’t have me believing I was crazy for a while.”
Ava sighed. “I guess … if that’s what we have to do.” She frowned faintly. “I’ll work on getting a job listing posted, and I’ll ask around the university campus too, see if there are any students who’d like to work part-time, at least.”

“That’s a good idea” he told her, part time would be better than nothing. “So how have you been?” he asked, not wanting to outright ask her about her personal business so just keeping it vague. If she wanted to be specific she could decide on that on her own.

“What the… fuck?” Kira was bewildered with what the heck she was seeing. What the hell was that? It wasn’t something she had ever encountered in town before so all she could do was stand, stare and watch as the vampire was swept away by the greyish looking beast. Her heart hammered against her chest both from the attack and this sight.

High up in the air he removed the vampire’s head from its body. The body started falling and as it did it turned to ash, along with the head. He landed back, a ways away and keeping to the shadows. “Are you alright?” he asked as he focused on shifting back to his human form
