Credence couldn’t help but flinch a little at the raise of her voice, dark eyes flitting quickly to the doorway, waiting for the sound of footsteps on the stairs. Thankfully they didn’t come, and his chin dropped again, although the tension never left his shoulders, still looking a little like a cornered animal.
“Sometimes wicked people do nice things…” he said softly. That was what Ma always reminded, how the devil had been angel once, how sin often came disguised as delight.
Modesty dipped her head in embarrassment, feeling guilt gnaw in her stomach at making Credence uncomfortable. It was the last thing she wanted... making her brother nervous. She gently patted Credence’s elbow reassuringly.
“Sometimes...” His statement was much more fitting for their mother, a truly wicked woman capable of occasional nice acts, though Modesty knew to be wary of Mary Lou’s intentions. “I’m not a liar, right? So I’m not lying by telling you that you’re not wicked.”

Credence ducked his head, dark eyes flickering to his hands, to the scars and welts that littered his palms, some old and pale white against his skin, others red raw and still fresh. Years of beatings, criss crossing over each other, a story told in his hands alone. Slowly he turned his hands back over, swallowing past the lump in his throat.
“I shouldn’t be so wicked,” he murmured, half-parroting the words he always heard from Mary Lou. He was a wicked boy, foul, damned. A wicked, wicked sinner who would burn in hell. That was why she punished him after all, in hopes that she might be able to make him repent and save his soul. No matter how he tried, it never seemed to be good enough.
“But you’re not wicked!” She winced at the volume of her own voice, watching the door anxiously to check if she had drawn the attention of their Ma. Modesty held her breath waiting, only exhaling when it seemed to be no additional movement from the woman downstairs. Keeping her voice a whisper, she sighed.
“You aren’t... I dunno why you think you are but you aren’t. You’re the nicest and you don’t get mad at me and you’re not wicked...”

4. Worst Fears
Modesty’s worst fears always revolve around loss. She has a fear of abandonment that she’d never admit to and refuses to let her guard down. Convincing herself that she’s better off alone and able to cope with any problem that arises (especially since she has dealt with most things alone), Modesty never really lets her guard down and tries to pretend she’d be content with a life alone. She’s afraid she’s unlovable and flawed with something innately wrong to not have family and lose the few people she lets herself love.
Her boggart is Mary Lou’s body because seeing what the obscurus did to their mother was the moment Modesty’s life changed. Even if the Second Salem Church wasn’t a happy home, it was home and she hasn’t known a home since. The worst is her guilt that she felt relieved at her adoptive mother’s passing.
21. Illness
Luckily, Modesty tends to be a fairly healthy person. She’s never had any major illness, which might be from the conditions she grew up and building up a strong immune system. In the event she does get sick, she tends to try and push through it and act as if she’s fine. She puts up a front if someone insists on taking care of her, but if she’s sick enough, she’ll give in and find herself enjoying the attention.
23. Romance
Modesty will deny it but she is a romantic at heart. Her inability to fully trust others and be vulnerable makes it hard for her to fall in love, but once she lets herself, she falls hard. She is more likely to fall for someone whose been a friend for a while first rather than a love at first sight type of girl. Her first love is a boy from a different house who she’d gotten to know for a few years. He had to make the first move.
