my grandpa is uncomfortable around gay people but it’s not his fault and i’m not going to sever all ties with him for it because he lived his whole life in a straight world, of course he’s going to be weirded out by what’s going on now, he’s an old man and we’re young

he’s still a good person he just grew up in a different world

you can’t just look at an old man and say “that guy thinks it’s weird that guys are kissing other guys and i know that he’s wrong. fuck him. what a scumbag.” that’s completely unreasonable! everything is changing over time and things are changing REALLY fast these days, come on

ok sam i don’t really feel like i have to forgive old people for being bigoted. i don’t think i will ever feel like someone gets a pass for being racist/homophobic/sexist. if someone related to you actively thought you were worse because you were gay would you really be ok with it?

I don't really understand the "THINGS ARE CHANGING FAST!!!" argument.  How many years does it take to adjust to an idea?  Gay people have been around and very vocal for a big chunk of any old person's life.  They've been in movies and on TV and of course in real life for a long time now.  Decades.  It's not like all of a sudden in the past 10 years gay people just sprung up out of nowhere scaring elderly folks around the world and we need to give them a second to catch their breath.  They've been there.  Some of our grandparents probably bullied gay kids when they were young.  Some of our grandparents ARE gay.  Think about that, some of our grandparents were around during a time when going to a gay bar in the US was a really good way to get arrested, but they still went because it was one of the few places they could be themselves for a bit.  So why do we make excuses for the ones who were bigoted then and bigoted now?  I've never liked this sort of short-sighted view of LGBT-rights because it makes it sound like it just started in the 2000s.  Yes, things are getting better, but it's not like nobody had accepted homosexuality as okay in the past.  There were plenty of LGBT allies back in the day and there's no reason our grandparents couldn't have been one.  But ignoring that they weren't then, there's DEFINITELY no reason to excuse it now.  It's just as bad when people do this to excuse racism or sexism as if our grandparents haven't had Most Of Their Life to sort that out.  I think a big reason for this is because at a certain age people just sort of give up and go "well I can't expect grandpa to stop being racist/homophobic/sexist just let him say what he wants nobody say anything to him" as if he's a child who is going to have his heart shattered if someone says a single harsh word to him.  Meanwhile LGBT folk of the same elderly age have to deal with the consequences.  You don't have to confront your grandparents if you don't want to, but don't use "they're old!!! times were different!!!" as your excuse.
