Nikolai Lantsov, second son of a King, forgotten child of Ravka, Sea Captain and occasional pirate, lurched into consciousness with the taste of seawater burning his lungs as he made a valiant attempt to cough up half the ocean. Something was pressed against his back, holding him on his side in the sand, even as the water still lapped at his legs. When he came back to himself enough to put an arm out to support himself, whatever was holding him up moved. Lungs still heaving, he levered himself into something resembling a sitting position, and looked over to see what… who… had pulled him from the still churning sea.
