Holy shit good job I still log into the internet from time to time!
Yeah, I knew Bono. And if you told me to pick any three people that you want your company to represent in the whole management business everywhere, I’d say three of the top three for me would be Harry Styles, the Eagles and U2. So I’ve died and gone to heaven with this. I’m really proud of what Jeffrey and his team have accomplished with Harry. Watching that has been incredible. And Jeffrey and I are doing U2 together, so it’s really been fun.

You were toying with giving the song ‘Here Comes The Comeback’ to Harry – why did you ultimately decide to keep it for yourself?
“Mixed feelings, I suppose. When I made it, I was kind of embarrassed by it and I didn’t think it was something for me. I didn’t hear the strengths in it at the time. Sarah said, ‘Play it for Harry’ and I was like, ‘No!’ Then about 24 hours later, I sent it to him and immediately, he loved it. Every time I saw him he’d be playing it off his phone so I thought, ‘Hm, maybe there’s something in it’. Eventually, we were making part of ‘Harry’s House’ and he’s like, ‘Can I have it?’ So I did hear him sing on it and it stayed like that for a while, then he put it on the shelf and no one talked about it so I asked for it back.
“I was still in this Bert and José bubble and that didn’t belong in there at all – it’s like putting a square in a triangle hole. So I think I eventually caved in a little bit and thought, ‘Well, it can be more than just this thing I’m forcing it to be’. I kept hearing his voice on it when it wasn’t there, though, so I was like, ‘It’d be fun if you came back on it a little bit’, so I think he comes in on the second verse and stays in for a little bit.”

“David Hockney has been reinventing the way we look at the world for decades,” says Harry Styles. “It was a complete privilege to be painted by him.” Late last May, Styles traveled to Hockney’s light-filled studio in Normandy and stationed himself on a cane chair, ready to become the esteemed artist’s latest subject. Over two days, Hockney worked to capture the exact hues of red and yellow in Styles’s striped cardigan, the indigo of his jeans, the string of pearls at his neck—not to mention the unmistakable tousled fringe of one of the world’s biggest pop stars.
The unveiling of the portrait kicks off the second iteration of the National Portrait Gallery’s Hockney exhibition “Drawing From Life,” which first opened in February 2020, only to close weeks later due to the pandemic. With the addition of a new room of pictures charting Hockney’s creative impulses throughout lockdown, the show returns on November 2—a few months after a refurbishment of the entire museum—with Styles’s portrait as its crown jewel. HAPPY: As a guitarist, how did your experience touring with Harry Styles influence your approach to songwriting and performing your own music?
MITCH: Certainly when writing and recording, I would notice Harry’s ability to put his whole self into a song at a moment’s notice. And he can work pretty fast if he chooses to. If I’m remembering correctly, Watermelon Sugar was one of two songs written and demoed that day.
When it comes to my music, I’m pretty slow. The keepable stuff doesn’t always come all at once. I’ll work on some songs, then put them away for a while.
When it comes to shows, keeping it fun is the most important thing to Harry. That’s what I try to remember when walking on stage with my songs.
