jocelynโs favorite time of day is, funnily enough, the middle of the night; she loves walking in the moonlight, she loves the quiet sounds of people at rest โ when she was in ferelden, sheโd often go on midnight foraging trips with her father, whoโd be on guard while she collected herbs for the apothecary. eventually she was old enough and skilled enough to handle herself if need be, but malcolm would often accompany her regardless. theyโd have good conversations, albeit hushed ones, and sometimes would spend an hour or two of the trip stargazing. he taught her all the constellations he knew, and told her the stories of each. they often didnโt practice magic in the dead of night, but they did talkย about it. about the responsibility of magic, about the burden of care, about the ethics of magic use. jocelynโs midnights were the highlight of the entire day.ย
because she grew used to being up at odd hours, once she moves to kirkwall she is more or less inured to the concept of walking about at all hours. sheโll sleep for a handful of hours in the early evening, but then often get up and patrol, which is helpful for catching questionable characters in their questionable acts.ย
itโs not uncommon for her to be drinking or laughing or just hanging around the hanged man at midnight, one, two, three in the morning. then sheโll usually find her way either back home or crash in varricโs rooms, or in the clinic for an hour or two in the early morning, before things get going for the day.
who wants to tenderly kiss jocelynโs forehead and let her know that itโs alright, that she doesnโt have to bear the burdens of an entire city on her shoulders, alone, that she can set the weight down for an afternoon, or an evening, and the world wonโt fall apart ????

โOh yeah.โ If The Iron Bull was any more excited, he would vibrate off of the ground. His strides are filled with purpose, axe gleaming in the sun. โYou donโt get a job like this every day.โ The Bullโs Chargers, however, were decidedly less enthused. โBone Pit,โ Stitches muttered to himself. โCanโt be anything good coming out of a bone pit. Who ever said they wanted to take a summer holiday to the Bone Pit?โ โThe Wounded Coast isnโt exactly a day at the beach,โ Krem said with a straight face, dodging the halfhearted punch thrown in his direction while Bull cackled at his pun in the background. โMaybe Kirkwallโs just got a bad reputation from all the unfortunate names people are giving it. You seem nice enough, Champion.โ โLot of room in a pit,โ Rocky mused aloud, surging forward to move closer to Hawke. โYou looking to expand the mine? Carve out some deeper tunnels, safer areas? Thereโs tricks to keep out the spiders, yโknow. Iโd be happy to make recommendations and do a little extra work onsite. After we slay the dragon.โ Skinner snorted. โAs if youโll be able to think after we slay the dragon the size of the mine.โ โYeah,โ Bull rumbled, his mind clearly picturing the battle ahead. โYeah. Spiders will be a good warm up. We kill a lot of spiders in this line of work.โ He grinned at Hawke. โIโm sure I donโt have to tell you that.โ
ย ย ย ON ANY OTHER DAY, JOCELYN WOULD ENJOYย the banter being thrown about her. It spoke to camaraderie and a firm team. She misses her own team. Her eye catches Varricโs, the only member of said teamย whoโd accompanied them out of the city, and he seems to read her mind. Her lips quirk in a rueful expression. There isnโt much she can do about her bleeding heart, as her chronicler might term it when putting pen to paper. He knows her best, though, and could tell her mind was straying from the task ahead to the people left behind. ย ย ย She takes a deep breath and reexamines what they know. There is dragon at the mines. And ... thatโs it.ย ย ย ย This will be funย ( sarcasm intended ).ย ย ย ย โโM not opposed to improving the tunnels,โ she muses, after a beat of silence. โOf course, that depends on whether or not we have anyone willing to work there after all this. I wouldnโt blame them if every miner in the area threw in their lot with someone else. Dragons are not for the faint-hearted, and not even for the strong-hearted, most times. Only the densely foolish of us decide we can run them off.โย ย ย ย Jocelyn sends a smile in the Chagersโ general direction, to show that she counts herself among those foolish, and means no offense.ย ย ย ย โSpiders, on the other hand โโโ Iโm a deft hand at eradicating spiders.โย

I heard about the Champion. About Kirkwall. And I heard what became of Carver. Not surprised by any of it. You wouldnโt ask him around for tea, but he had a stare like a templar, drive like a Warden, and more skill than sense. And Iโll not say a bad word more than that, because Iโm still here and ruddy kings arenโt. And thatโs because of men like him trying.

hi i am here to say: do u ever start thinking abt hawke/varric & just go Feral?
doekkabi.โ
hanaโs jaw clenches restlessly, the question ofย โ why ? โ rolling around in her mouth. itโs not even that she doesnโt believe in goodness , she does. but somehow the puzzle pieces never quite fit in her mind thatshe deserved it too.ย not with the years of constant spewing that she had meant nothing. but maybe , despite the instant response to recoilโ to run , she needed proof that the softness that laid in-between her ribs wasnโt a weakness. what better way to reassure herself than spending time with likeminded people ?ย
it was still hard ,ย ridiculously so. especially when she began to feel something for them & learning that to some degree they all shared pain in common.ย
the redness in her face deepens at the gentle tutting and after a beat, hana leans closer to jocelyn & pulling at the tunic to help give the other a better view of her injury. and to her word, the wound had been healing , though still showed angry redness of new skin healing over. the warmth from the magic after the gentle prodding has her easing some of the tension thatโs all too ingrained in her posture as the discomfort and strain eases considerably.ย
since inching closer to her companion, her gaze has been stuck on her own shoes. unable to quite meet theothers gaze, but finally lifts her head with a gentle shake of her head.ย โย no ,ย this is enough. bring it to the clinic.ย โ gently easing her clothes back into place, hanaโs eyes takes jocelyn in. peering carefully at her posture,ย the stray loose hairs framing her face. hanaโs hands fiddled in one of her numerous hidden pockets before hearing the quiet clink of a tin. pulling it out hana holds out her little tin of toffee ,ย the weariness of the other not lost on her.ย โ here , it makes me feel better when iโm tired. โ
ย ย ย WHEN HANA PULLS AWAY, JOCELYN DOES NOT ย press the issue. She understands the skittishness โ sheโd once been the same. Itโs hard to accept help from relative strangers. And though theyโd begun to know each other, begun to help each other even in little ways, since that first time Hana had requested Jocelynโs help, it was difficult to give up a sense of autonomy. It was harder still to admit that you couldnโt do it all on your own, when on your own is how you survived. ย ย ย Thatโs why Jocelyn wants to help, though โโ to show Hana and those like her that they didnโt need to survive on their own. Jocelynโs situation had markedly improved when sheโd begun to grow her circle of friends. Having a handful of people to rely on outside of the Hawke family had been a blessing, though at first sheโd been just as wary. ย ย ย Jocelyn busies herself with gathering a few sprigs of various herbs and then deposited them all in a small muslin sack. She is pointedly ignoring the instruction to refrain from making the poultice. Seeing anyone hurt, when she has the ability to help, is an affront to her very nature, one sheโs sure Hana did not mean to commit. Thereโs the clink of a tin and Jocelyn pauses, glancing over to the younger woman. Her eyes widen in surprise as the offering, and, after only a brief pause, she takes the toffee with a grateful smile. ย ย ย โThank you,โ she says, then pops it in her mouth and continues in her poultice-making. A small bowl of water, heated to a just barely tolerable temperature with a short burst of magic, then drops the muslin sack in. She kneads the sack for a minute, humming a tune sheโd heard at The Hanged Man the night before, and then, when she judges it to be done, lifts it out of the bowl and gives it a small shake to get rid of the excess water. ย ย ย โThe beautiful thing about herbs,โ she says, weighing the sack in her hand, โis that they can grow anew, with the proper sort of attention. They are not a finite resource, if one is careful.โ ย ย ย She returns her attention to Hana, and holds out the poultice. Jocelyn tries very hard not to appear imperious, but Carverโs always said she has a scarily focused sort of face when it comes to healing matters. It had worked well when they all were smaller, and heโd been resisting treatment for a wound or a sickness, but now she tries to temper that ferocity with some congeniality. Though no one could fault her for her earnest desire to see people she cared about well. Her ferocity was mostly made up of tenderness. ย ย ย โYou hold this on your shoulder until it cools, then use a clean bandage to bind the wound, and it should help with pain and prevent infection. Youโre more than welcome to wait here and let me do the bandaging, but if you have somewhere to be, you can go.โย
โMany people seem to think it foolish, even superstitious, to believe that the world could still change for the better. And it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, โWhat do I care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now.โ Yes, evil often seems to surpass good. But then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts. One morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw. And so I must still have hope.โ

you would think that jocelyn can handle herself in the kitchen, seeing as sheโs a decent apothecary & knows how to make potions & tonics & poultices, but every time she makes food it is โtoo herbyโ ( verbatim, from carver hawke )
