how to be more present๐ŸŒ™

  • take more moments throughout the day to just focus on your breathing.
  • notice the things other people would normally just glance over.
  • let go of expectations. holding onto expectations means that youโ€™re holding onto an โ€œidealizedโ€ or โ€œperfectโ€ reality, which means that youโ€™re not in the present. often we are left disappointed when these expectations are not met.
  • be grateful for the things you have, and stop wishing for your life to be different.
  • donโ€™t sweat the small stuff. donโ€™t dwell on the small unfortunate yet irrelevant moments that weโ€™ll most likely forget about!!
  • notice the negative thoughts floating in your mind and replace them with loving ones.
  • take one step at a time. you might not be where you want to be at the moment, but you will get there. and it might not feel like it, but youโ€™re making progress.
  • forget about the past and the future. many things such as shame or anxiety keep us pulled away from the current moment.
  • take more time out of your day to do the things you love!!
  • get away from the digital world more often.
  • do self care! make sure to take care of your health, physical and mental before anything else.

tips to get your life back on track after a breakdownโ„ข

  • sleep. your body needs to rest. the average panic attack takes as much energy as running a half-marathon. let yourself rest. take a 20 minute nap. any longer and youโ€™ll hit your REM cycle, and youโ€™ll wake up worse off. after, youโ€™ll feel so much better.
  • clean something. literally anything. a plate, a drawer, the whole mf bathroom. it doesnโ€™t matter how much or how little. itโ€™ll make you feel more in control, and itโ€™ll make your surroundings more appropriate for recovery.
  • get some fresh air. even just opening your window for a few hours will help. if you feel up to it, take a walk. take your dog. pick some flowers. cloudgaze. even just sit in your garden for a bit. your body will thrive off of non-stale air.ย 
  • eat and drink. I know for some people, myself included, this is Hard. itโ€™s alright if all you can manage is a granola bar, or some cereal. anything is progress and will fuel your body. drink water if you can, but anything apart from alcohol will hydrate you.
  • take a shower. I have clinical depression. have done since I was 12. I know how hard it is to take a shower. but it fucking helps. if you donโ€™t do anything else off this list, do this. itโ€™ll help more than you know.
  • talk to someone. I canโ€™t stress this enough. humans are social creatures! we crave interaction. even the most introverted introvert needs to talk to someone. call your mom. text a buddy. skype your brother. chat to your local cashier. anything !! youโ€™ll feel less alone, and hopefully get some good serotontitty flowing.
  • do something fun! same as above, itโ€™ll make u feel so much bette, and provide a distraction. some good options are writing, drawing, watching a movie, dancing - anything you enjoy!
  • be kind to yourself. itโ€™s okay if you relapsed, or if you had a bad day, or anything else. treat yourself gently. you wouldnโ€™t so harsh to a friend in your situation. itโ€™s gonna be okay.

if you canโ€™t do all of these, itโ€™s okay. there are better days ahead. this, too, will pass.
