If you need more motivation, I will draw a Tolkien character or OC of your choice for a donation of at least 10 pound to the Romani Ukranian refugee fundraiser I just reblogged (this one).

I’m having a bit of a stressful time in my own life right now so I can’t offer more than sketches (in pen, ink or pencil, up to you. might add some colour if I have time). I also don’t have the time to set up anything to check whether you actually did so, but I trust most people have something of a conscience to live with. If you lie about it know I despise you.

There are a lot of fundraisers going around at the moment, and you cannot expect me to reblog every one of them– this is a tolkien tumblr (on hiatus), you shouldn’t use a random tumblr as a source of news or orgs to donate to anyway, there are good journalists and organisations to follow for that.

But this one happens to support fleeing/displaced people in a very direct way, and even if they did reach their initial urgent goal their current ~2100 pounds is simply not much to support multiple displaced families for who knows how long.

This is a Crowdfunder for on-the-ground, mutual aid for Ukranian Roma. Currently, it's mainly being shared amongst some UK-based Romani and Traveller activists/charities I keep up with but I thought I'd share here. It's currently the only one of it's kind that I've been seeing.

Roma will inevitably be forgotten BY EVERYONE during this war if we don't do our utmost to remember and help them in any way we possibly can, even if that is simply boosting info about how to help them escape immediate danger.

I also think this Twitter thread on the history of Ukranian Roma (from the Middle Ages to the present day) by Queer Roma is a good primer to read alongside boosting this Crowdfunder.

Btw, as I'm aware there's a lot of false info etc. going around atm, I'm highlighting that this Crowdfunder is being run and monitored by a registered UK charity based in Glasgow called Romano Lav:

I was making myself emotional imagining a Noldor/Quenya version of the song Northwest Passage  , but then I realised, if Fingolfin’s people hAD written that song on the Helcaraxe, there would definitely have been a Serious Version and a Stupid Version.

The Serious Version is like, the most heartwrenchingly beautiful thing you’ve ever heard. 

The stupid version is like, “Draawing one nut-freezing line, I would taake the Northwest Passage, to throt-TLE the neck of Feanaro, son of Finwe King,” followed by interminable verses describing all the creative ways you’re going to murder Feanor when you arrive, a la the Robin’s Minstrels song.

Uhhh I may have written the serious version. Not written ON the Helcaraxe, but by a descendant of one of the survivors trying to reconcile with their desire to return to Valinor.

Lotr film fans utterly shunning the new amazon show…. it’s just so funny like I saw someone say it was ‘unnacceptable to change the canon’ beloveds? So far RoP has announced less changes to the base canon than Peter Jackson got away with like all this is exactly what the lotr films did like Contracted timeline? Check. Girlbossified character? Check. Changed hair colours etc? Check. Completely unrecognisable character motives? Check. Made characters younger than they should be? Check. SEEMS TO HAVE COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN ANARION? CHECK!! If you’re running your own amazon boycott then fair enough but if it’s just because you think Sauron (who we haven’t seen or heard cast yet) isn’t going to be hot then say sorry to ‘beautiful, dark eyed’ Denethor right now.

Definitely not putting the reblogger on blast, just using these tags to continue the convo but I mean… have you all heard from the show runners? Like I’ve listened to them in interviews and articles and such, they all sound as genuine as peter et al did in terms of their passion for the project and their wish to both get it right AND create something unique. Whether or not I believe they have done that, they seem sincere and so do the actors for what little we’ve heard from them. Like yes Amazon’s motive is soulless cash grabbing, but no more than it was Warner Bro’s motive, no more than it was Harvey Weinstein’s motive. Like everything is feeling very corporate, but that’s exactly what the run up to the films coming out felt like too. There were trailers run in peak times and puff piece articles everywhere. And in our climate today, advertising just has a more corporate feeling as a whole in comparison with 2001. The show will come out and I predict it’ll have a deluxe box set full of ‘making of’ interviews and lore pieces and looks at all the costume designs and such, with all the people who worked on it really excited about it and new viewers will eat it up! I suppose the only difference between them that I can see is that LotR was a fairly untested IP in terms of live action, and therefore was running at an awkward budget, whereas the amazon show is flush with cash because they know it has a viewer base already. 

sorry if i jump on the post (that’s not referred to OP tho) but i do wonder why the heck people are so obsessed with putting the whole ‘girlbossified character’ under their complaints with the series. first of all, “girlboss” doesn’t mean literally anything and it’s extremely annoying ( if not, uhm, just plain offensive ) seeing it being used for any female character who doesn’t match their vague and volatile standards of “femininity” ( like, i’ve seen Mirabel from Encanto being called a girlboss bc … uh she doesn’t have a - male - love interest?????), and second, none sees a problem in the fact that both alt right ‘fans’ and progressive leftist wannabe fans are complaining about … Galadriel being a fighter???? i’m not saying that she will be automatically well written in the series bc what they said in the interviews left me with very little hope but uh. UH. people should really make themselves a little exam or two

anyway re: the production of the LOTR movies, let’s not forget that the producer was WEINSTEIN of all the people … years ago during the #metoo era Peter Jackson even stated in an interview that Weinstein pressured him into firing an actress ( that he’d already hired ) without telling him why, and he’d just discovered that it was bc that sick fucker of HW had molested the actress ( who hadn’t a way to tell the truth at the time ). i do get that it felt much more ‘genuine’ than whatever Amazon is doing but it’s not that the production of LOTR was a fairytale tho
