not to sound old fashioned or whatever but getting rid of payphones is a mistake, and the only reason we should do it is if we're replacing them with free, public use phones. Having the ability to reach out to others in every place of public congress and transit is an important safety feature and the advent and adoption of smartphones does not negate their utility.

I know i've already lost this battle, so it's somewhat pointless to say, but smartphones die. chargers aren't always there. smartphones break. some people don't have them. Being able to call someone and ask for help, to get in touch with friends and family, without relying on something you yourself own, is a societal good.

Furthermore, expecting everybody to have a single piece of fragile technology on them at all times to the point that critical services are not available without them is truly mind-boggling to me. This goes for things like restaurant menus and transit maps as well. you should be able to navigate the world without a brick made by Apple or Samsung, and if you can't, then something is fundamentally broken. It's one thing for new technology to augment an existing real-world experience, it's another thing to usurp it entirely.

The real reason millenials say "Adulting" is that that if you say something is "for adult reasons" or "grown up reasons" we've been trained to associate that with sex and shit when we just wanna say, be vague about our chore habits

...you know I don’t think I’ve ever seen it put into words so concisely but that is exactly why I use “adulting” over any other term.

“doing adult things” = almost always a euphemism for sexy stuff (when other people say it)

“adulting” =  all the tedious things like laundry and cooking that you become responsible for as an adult

There’s also just the way we were raised, where adulthood was treated as automatic and innate. The authority of adults was meant to be unquestioned by virtue of their adulthood. When you get older, you too will automatically Be An Adult, and be inheritor to this great authority.

Basically the word “adult” or “grown up” was used to condescend to us and exclude us. And what made a person an adult was treated as inherent.

Then we got older and tripped into what actually doing adulthood meant and came to find that

1. The people who were supposed to explain to us how this worked had completely failed to do so

2. They had done so in such a way that was meant to protect their authority while also (possibly inadvertently) barring us from the experiences and skills that would’ve helped us transition into adulthood better.

3. There is no inherent authority that comes with adulthood. The adults around us were talking out of their ass. Adult is a verb, not a noun. It’s not an inherent source of authority, it’s a thing you work at daily and you have to maintain it.

And what’s more the same people who lorded their age over us, telling us repeatedly we’d suddenly come to agree with them with age, completely failed to cede any of that authority or power even as some millennials are now staring down 40. So clearly “adulthood” is a game you’re trying to play to control us, even now. Fuck that. We’re not playing.

Honestly that some in Gen Z find it irritating is fine by me. If they think it sounds juvenile, that’s because it is. It is specifically useful in that it breaks the illusion of adults being better than kids. When kids are like, “you sound absurd. You’re in your thirties” I’m like, yeah kid. That’s the thing. Being an “adult” never stops being absurd. If it makes me sound like the mundanities of my life are all a performance that has nothing to do with my actual age or ability, good. That’s why I say it. I’m glad you’re growing up knowing that age isn’t an inherent door to authority. I’m glad you’re growing up thinking “fuck, these adults ten years older than me don’t act grown up at all.” That’s what we want. That’s we call it “adulting”, instead of claiming adulthood as part of us.

Maybe if your gen is lucky you will feel more appropriate claiming your adulthood without caveats. Maybe your definitions of adulthood are more versatile, so you won’t feel barred from the signifiers you’d need to feel like an adult. Maybe you’ll have a better launching pad. Maybe you’ll always hate we call it “adulting”. That’s okay. I hope you get better than we did. But I’m still gonna call it adulting.

As to Boomers who don’t like it, you shouldn’t have defunded my practical education and made getting a foot into a normal stable life so damn difficult, you fucks.

Also, watching the Boomer generation age, I have to say that their “certainties” are based off of a faith in institutions that were there, but are rapidly disappearing or straight-up gone. They could take it for granted and assume that they’d earned their stability (“I come from a generation that works hard!”). They genuinely think the stability in some way correlated with their individual choices.

Millennials know any “stability” is illusory: it’s all built on wet tissue paper. What’s wild is seeing when Boomers occasionally punch their foot through said tissue paper, because there used to be something real under it. Then they turn to you like “can you believe this?” and it’s like… yes, I can, I never got a chance to know it could be otherwise.

the dumbification of jason todd despite all we've seen he's capable of is caused by adult men who dick ride batman so hard i'm sure they get wet at the sound of his name

i see this jason todd who actually looks his very young age (instead of the 30yr old man that comics like to portray)

and feel my heart breaking just imagining bruce beating him up, almost killing him, mind-breaking him, and just overall being a total piece of shit father towards him.

a huge chunk of the reason why people don't view bruce's actions towards jason as abusive or wrong is because jason doesn't look his age. he's drawn to be this 35yr old father of three who looks even older than dick (and way too on par with bruce) that people see their fights as one between batman and any of his regular rogues. when they fight, it just looks like batman is fighting a man his age and not an actual young person. it doesn't look like batman is fighting his son who's barely even drinking age (and who def wasn't drinking age in utrh). their fights are portrayed in a way that eliminates the very real power struggle between them.

this applies to jason's entire character as well. a lot of people don't sympathize with how he died or his actions as robin or his fights with the other bats because he doesn't look his age. he always looks older and scarier than everyone else. tim has many sympathizers from the titans tower incident because jason just looked like a grown man fighting a 12yr old (even tho i disagree, tim was built and like 17 lmfao).

anyways, i just wish comics would actually draw jason to look his age, which literally ranges from 19 to early twenties. he's young- so young, and it's so annoying to see him drawn and written as someone older than even bruce.

The funny part is that clay tablets are supposed to be ephemeral. When you’re done with them you just soak them in water, smooth them out, and re-use them for a different message. They weren’t meant to be any more permanent than an email.

The only reason we still have that particular clay tablet is because a. Ea-nasir was a huge weirdo who collected all of his hate mail, and b. his house later burned down, and coincidentally did so at exactly the right temperature to bake the collected tablets into pottery rather than destroying them.

It’s basically the equivalent of an email getting inscribed onto a steel plate by accident.

We need shittable cities (actively maintained public restrooms).

Avatar
scientia-rex

A city without well-maintained restrooms is a city where many of the chronically ill cannot leave their homes, and where the homeless are criminalized for bodily functions. If I had a nickel for every day I haven’t gone somewhere with friends because I didn’t know the bathroom situation, I’d have enough to put in a sock and beat a couple of billionaires to death.

This is thanks to yet another bigoted political tactic called the Urinary Leash. If there is nowhere for you to pee but at home, you stay home, out of sight and out of mind. It was used against women for a long time, used against Black people for longer, and used against trans, poor, disabled, and homeless people today as a way of keeping deviants out of society.

And it fucking sucks

Found out RT is shutting down and I gotta say my heart is breaking. There were some genuinely great, creative people to have an impact because of that company.

I'll never forget my friend who turned me onto RvB as a teen, how I loved Achievement Hunter and how Ashley from The Know/The Patch turned me onto one of my favorite games of all time Fantasy Life.

There are valid criticisms of RT to be made even now. But today, on the day the staff is finding out they're losing their jobs, on the day a fanbase is losing a whole host of content, my heart goes out to them and theirs.

have you guys who arent into sports heard about the new baseball uniforms controversy. its bad

mlb changed uniform manufacturers this year to this company that has been making dogshit licensed fan merch for a while (fanatics, may the lord curse their name) and first of all the new jerseys are cheap and have awful stitching and the lettering on player names is abysmal. but second and most importantly the new pants are Extremely Transparent

also apparently they not doing custom tailoring for pants anymore. which is a problem because pitchers tend to have really thick thighs and standard issue pants across the board are not gonna cut it lmao (see exhibit a below)

an article i read in the athletic about this whole thing specifically mentioned the fat ass issue

happy spring training. whatever happens after this happens

Neil Newbon when fans ask what color Astarion's eyes were before he became a vampire: that's headcanon, I'm not going to answer that, it's whatever is true for you.

Neil Newbon when fans imply that Astarion would ever in his entire life use the phrase "sucky sucky" to refer to vampiric activities: ABSOLUTELY NOT. THAT IS NOT CANONICAL. OUT OF CHARACTER. NO. NOT CANON.
