Persian translation of a Ramayana

by Zayn al’-‘Abidin

Indian, Mughal, 1597 - 1605

Opaque watercolor, ink and gold on paper.

This exuberant image depicts the monkey-god Hanuman, the divine general of the Hindu diety Rama. After Rama is mortally wounded in battle with the great demon Ravana, Hanuman speeds from the island of Sri Lanka to the distant Himalayas to gather a magical healing herb. Unsure of which herb will restore the comatose hero to consciousness, the intrepid monkey-god fearlessly tears off and transports an entire mountaintop to Rama.
No other Indian painting captures with such artistry Hanuman’s delighted pride. Zayn al-‘Abidin brilliantly contrasts the emphatic contours of the monkey-god’s muscular leap with delicately rendered plants and a diminutive genre scene. The pale blue sky emphasizes Hanuman’s lightness, and spots of rich color in the birds and trailing flowers enliven the overall surface.
