Do We Have a Purpose?
So, I want to take a moment to be real. A lot of Christians have asked me what purpose to life there is without a god; not even without A god - without THEIR god. Honestly, I find this incredibly arrogant. I mean, really. How conceited do you have to be to think that there MUST be no purpose for anyone who disagrees with your set of beliefs??
By no means do I speak for all atheists, just for myself, but I believe that your life’s purpose is what you make it. After all, I highly doubt the Christians defining their purpose as living for God actually get it from God himself; otherwise, their beliefs would be identical - even if God assigned them different lifetime jobs or duties or whatever. So basically, the people “living for God” are actually living for their personal interpretations for God. So even for theists, I honestly think that at the end of the day, your life’s purpose is what you make it. You form it out of your own experiences, interpretations, and desires in regards to the world around you. So ultimately, there is no actual set, objective purpose to life.
This isn’t a bad thing. Quite the opposite! Because no matter what comes after, whether it’s Christians or atheists or whoever who’s right about the world, we all have the power to steer our own lives in the way we want it - for the most part. We all have the power to choose our own unique purpose. I mean, think of it this way. Even in regards to Christians, no two Christians are the same. Lacy Lou may believe that God doesn’t see gays as sinners and that the Bible is more of a loose guideline with its own flaws that you have to navigate through on your own - not an uncommon mindset among the younger generations of Christians. However, Jo Beth may think that homosexuality is a sin and may have no doubts in the Bible’s legitimacy. Not an uncommon belief in any group of Christians. Who’s to say which one’s right? We objectively can’t, even if we personally disagree with one or both.
So in short, take this away. No one decides your purpose but you. The fact that someone doesn’t live their life in the way you want to doesn’t mean they don’t have a purpose. It just means that they’ve perceived their purpose to be something to be carried out and end up as something different than what you’ve decided for yours.
