In 15x06 Golden Time, peak divorce, Castiel's buying D cell batteries

D cell batteries. Four of them. When's the last time you used D cell batteries? The only thing I've ever used them for is my boombox so I can listen to cassettes outside of my car

Oh yeah, and this episode was written by Meredith Glynn, who previously wrote 12x19 The Future with Robert Berens. You remember, the last time Dean and Cas' relationship was a little rocky and Castiel tried to return the mixtape.

Am I saying Castiel's out there fishing and listening to the mixtape? Yes, I am.

One Drop, when What You Need is the Ocean   |  Mature  |   47,442

Author: Baileys | Artist: sidewinder

Cas disappears after leaving once again to help the angels.  With God gone, Mary defected to the British men of letters, and the other major players all on their best behaviour, Dean tries to carry on as normal, hunt the things and save the people.  But the longer time goes by without so much as a text, the more his worry spirals.

Then, just when all hope is lost, like the supernatural yo-yo he is Cas is back.  Only something or someone has siphoned off grace he didn’t have to spare.  As they embark on yet another case together, it’s a race against time to stop whoever it is from finishing the job and removing Cas from Dean’s life for good.

Rob: We got this question that we’ve been avoiding because it’s a lot of words. When Castiel is talking  to Dean in a truck about being human, the line that was aired is a different line that the script reads.

Ben Edlund: Sure.

Rob: So the line that aired is, Castiel says “I used to belong to much better club and now I’m powerless, I’m hapless , I’m hopeless, I mean, why the hell not bury myself in women and in decadence, right? It’s the end, baby, that’s what decadence is for. Why not bang a few gongs before the lights go out. But then, that’s just how I roll.” But the script reads “But instead we become this. The only thing, I think,  we have left, Dean and me, is each other. If Dean says it’s time to get out in the blaze of glory, win or loose, so be it. I’m in, but then, that’s just how I roll.” It’s just an interesting little difference.

Rich: Well somebody had to rewrite that, right?

Ben Edlund: Sure, I mean, like that was either a rewrite based on a note or something that- it’s possible that there was a shift in language that came from a pass through Kripke. To me that feels like a rewrite based on “ Ok, we know what the subtext is, bury is a little bit.”

Rob: Gotcha.

Ben Edlund: Because, you know, it’s more interesting to know that an then have language kind of be less to the core. I mean, maybe not, sometimes you really want to go to that core.  But it didn’t seem necessary in that moment because look at the larger context. This guy is still hanging around. He’s going on a mission. And previously in the prior scene when he’s kind of like, when we used the word insouciant for the first and last time in Supernatural’s history. I believe, unless it gets quoted later in 15 seasons and I missed that. At that point he is totally ride or die with Dean. He’s basically “You say we a going on a suicide mission and there’s no hope or whatever” and Dean’s going “Yes, that’s what I’m saying” and he goes “Okay, let me go get the truck.” And so, in a sense, it was like- I would’ve done the same thing today. If that makes sense. Looking at the whole.

Rob: I like the idea of burying it more and not serving it on a platter. Letting people-

Ben Edlund: Mainly because all the other aspects of that story tell us that. Show us that, actually. That’s the whole thing. Show us, not tell us. I’ve heard that at some kind of seminar.

Talking about why this scene was rewritten/cut. Says he would get notes saying they know what the subtext is, bury it, use language less to the core but he wants to go straight to the core. Says its still clear Castiel is totally ride or die by Dean. He has to show it not tell it.

You were not crazy, folks, and I need to lie down.

I was wondering if you have more firefighter!dean fics. I tried to search in the tags but I didn't find anything. Thanks! ^-^

Because you can never get enough firefighter fics, we included either firefighter!dean or firefighter!cas. Enjoy!

Customer Service (Dean) by dreamingwriter [T, 10,300 word count]

Wherein Sam’s getting married, Dean is helping out as best he can, and Sam and Jess are worried about Dean, who keeps meeting Castiel and doesn’t quite mind.

destielmybeatingheart has a list with additional fics here . You can also search Firefighter Dean or Firefighter Cas tags(sorted by kudos) on AO3.

ETA: Submitted by resident-longwinded-anon (technically a WIP but first verse stands on its own):

The Colour ‘Verse (Dean) by whelvenwings [T, 10,700 word count, WIP]

Dean the Firefighter lives in a world of greys, reds, oranges and yellows. He’s a lower-spectrum, and the only way he can get his kick of green or blue is by sharing his colours with strangers in back alleys - until one day Cas crashes into his world, bringing the whole of the glorious upper spectrum with him.

And take a look at firefighter!dean fanart at destielfanworks!

ETA November, 2018

The Graveyard Shift by PurgatoryJar, riseofthefallenone [NC-17, 483,000 word count, WIP]

Dean’s favourite coffee shop, The Graveyard Shift, is only open after the sun goes down. Which is perfect for him, because that’s exactly when he craves coffee the most while doing the overnight at the fire hall. The coffee shop’s owner is pretty perfect too, but it’s kind of a bummer that Dean never gets to see Cas during the day. In a world where the supernatural live more or less in peace with the rest of humanity, it’s a little impolite to ask Cas just what he really is - or what his dark past entails.

Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fire by OsirisApollo (previously recced here) [T, 14,500 word count]

ER doctor, Castiel Novak, lives a boring life outside of his job. He doesn’t have time for much else with such long hours and so little sleep. But all of that changes when the fire alarm in his condo forces him outside during the day, and he manages to embarrass himself in front of the hottest fireman he’s ever seen. Castiel is ready to chalk it up to a one-time disaster, but the universe seems to have other plans. DeanCas MiniBang 2018

Given to Fly | Explicit | 60,952

It only upsets Dean's comfortable routine a little bit when Claire's illustrious uncle moves down to Norfolk to run his airfield. That is, until he meets his new boss face to face and can barely make words happen. Cas isn't doing much better, even if he knows exactly what he'd say to Dean if only he weren't Dean's commanding officer...

Test pilot instructor Cas (who's afraid of boats) ran from his Air Force family to join the Navy, Dean ran from his Marine Corps father to work on airplanes for the Navy— just as long as he doesn't have to fly in one, he's fine. They've met in the middle, but also in an impossible circumstance. It seems as if the one thing they want is something they can't have.

Unless solving one impossible mystery could free them...

Faking It  |  E  |  53,451 words

Author: GhoulsnHalos  |  Artist: King-of-Moose

Actor Dean Winchester’s career has hit a roadblock. Offers for a juicy lead or series regular have dried up. Castiel Novak’s acting career is struggling to get off the ground. Despite critical acclaim for his latest role as the angelic lead in an upcoming urban fantasy show, offers aren’t flooding in. What happens when the pair agree to their managers’ scheme of a three-month fake relationship to push them further into the media spotlight? It is only three months of joint public appearances pretending to fall in love in front of the cameras, right? They’re both actors. They play at make-believe for a living. It can’t be that hard to pull off, can it? Besides, what could possibly go wrong?

For a second, Castiel thinks the million-dollar, boxer-dropping grin that follows is for him. Then reality hits again.

“Thank you.”

He doesn’t know what else to say without making an even bigger assbutt of himself than he already has.

An unrecognizable emotion flashes across Dean’s features.

“Besides, we don’t have to do what they’ve scheduled all the time. We’re big boys, we can do whatever we like.” “

If Only You Return To Me  |  Mature  |  28,024

Author: arlingtonchamberofgay  |  Artist: sidewinder

The world has been saved, yet again, but this time, Dean is forced to carry on without his best friend. His best friend, who loved him. In true Winchester fashion, Dean decides to shove down and bury his feelings about the last words that Cas said to him and the implications thereof. Instead he buries himself in alcohol, hunting, and stupid ass decisions. After a failed rescue attempt in the Empty, he’s forced to reassess what his life looks like without the angel. Until, one day, a run of the mill hunt goes wrong because of a small bit of rebar.

Castiel somehow awakens in the Empty, much to the Shadow’s ever growing annoyance. After making a deal to return to Earth to find Dean in exchange for his grace, Cas finds himself in the same room he last saw the man. He’s devastated to discover that he’s too late, Dean is dead and in Heaven. Realizing there’s no point to coming back to a world without Dean, Cas goes to Heaven to speak with Jack in hopes of figuring out a way to get back to Dean and actually stay around. Of course, it’s more complicated than they expect.

Dean and Cas are desperate to find their way back to each other, but the universe seems to be working hard to keep them apart.

I was there for this, saw it live, and it was wonderful to see the respect given and meant but it's only on reflection and rewatch that I see how humble/ a little bashful/touched MC was, but also how truly sincere JA was and is about MC and his acting. 🤍🫂🤍🥰 Beautiful to see such friendship 😊
