• Figure out where you write best! For example I found out that I can only really write and focus when I write on a desktop computer at a desk. I can write on a laptop but I succumb to distractions much easier and like having a larger screen. Maybe you do better with a laptop or even pen and paper.
• Know what environment you write best in! I do my best work when its quiet and calm and inside. I cant focus with music or if someone is in the room watching a loud video or something. Maybe you do best listening to music or with someone to bounce ideas with. Maybe it's in your bed or on the couch or even outside. Move around and see what works best.
• READ! I used to be a big reader in middle and high school until I graduated and went to college. I also worked full time and didnt want to waste my limited personal time reading. It was much easier to just watch a show on TV. So if you're like me it might take some time to get back into it but I promise it helps. I found it easier to get back into reading by finding people who write similar to my own writing and then branch out to other styles. I also found I really can only read hardcover books. Dont know why but the odds of me reading and finishing a book are higher when its hardcover. Reading makes writers better and is recommended by many authors such as Stephen King.
• Don't believe you have to write every day! Just like the saying absence makes the heart grow fonder sometimes the best thing to do when you hit a wall is to just stop writing and take a rest. Do that thing all writers love and just think about your story or don't! Taking time away from your story can help you come back to it refreshed and excited to start again.
• Don't beat yourself up for not writing large chunks of story every time. If all you can write is a paragraph then all you can write is a paragraph. Some days you may be able to pop out 10 pages others barely a page. All that matters is you sat down and wrote something.
• Stop discouraging yourself for choosing yourself over writing. Chances are you arent a writer full time and have to work and go to school. Maybe you have kids or obligations that take time and energy. Life happens and it takes a lot out of you. If writing is making you stressed or even depressed similar to a normal job then stop. Take the time you need to feel better and come back to it when you're ready. Writing is HARD. And it takes a lot more effort and energy then most people think. Writing should be a fun and exciting thing but if you arent getting anything positive from it then its okay to stop and take care of yourself.
• Encourage yourself and other writers! We're all in the same boat and we're all evolving and getting better at the art. Not everyone has supportive friends and family to cheer them on and give encouraging feedback. Help each other out and let someone know if you like their work. It may be what they need to keep on going and improving.

Did you spend five hours on this one segment, forget the last time you ate, develop chapped lips, dry eyes, and a stiff back (time to get up and move), bang your head on the wall, laugh, cry, fidget, take your ADHD meds, deviate to watch YouTube, have an epiphany, curse in frustration and wonder why the hell you do this to yourself? Congratulations, you’re a Writer.
5. Embrace all the not-so-glamorous sides of writing, and accept the fact they’re going to happen time over again.
6. When you say “just one more line” and it’s 2:00 AM, I’ll be here to remind you to “go to sleep” (because I’m also depriving myself lol).
7. Actually, sleeping helps your mind feel refreshed, and it’s good for your health. If you’re struggling with a particular segment, one of the best things you can do is just put a cap on it for the time being, put in a placeholder, and get some shut eye. I know you don’t want to. But you will feel so much better and have more clarity and energy to continue when you wake. Trust me.
8. More often than not, those words you “just didn’t write down fast enough and now forgot” end up revealing themselves to you later in a much more profound way. Give the words time to get ready. They’re just spiffing up before coming to visit. :)
9. Be proud of yourself and your prose. Writing is an amazing part of who you are.
10. That trope has been written 1000 times before? Make it 1001.
11. You’ve already written this scenario? Write it again.
12. You’ve just written a single sentence. Now sit back for moment and think: you just wrote something brand new, never before seen. Nobody out there will ever write that sentence or formulate those thoughts the exact same way. You are a unique, mind-blowing, awe-inspiring human being.
13. Bask in the excitement that comes with a completed piece. Reflect on what you learned throughout and celebrate the little victories.
14. Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback, but also understand that you might not always get it, and that is OK.
15. Please re-read your work. Be gentle with yourself. You had to write that very first piece to get to where you are now. Love the process.
16. Your personal writing success is not based off of kudos or likes or reblogs.
17. There is no right or wrong way to write.
18. There is no such thing as “good” writing.

30. Embrace your writing mood swings. The stray, sweet and condensed blurbie. The ideal, bridging drabble. The solid, substantial oneshot. The hefty, elaborate 10k word chapter. Appreciate everything in-between, and that you are capable of all of it.
31. Nobody remembers that extra word or typo or stray speech mark back all the way back in chapter 3. Tell the little monster in your head to go to hell.
32. You’re not a weirdo for making facial expressions and mulling through your dialogue aloud. You. Are. A. Writer.
33. It’s OK if the Readers can’t always see exactly what you envisioned in your head, or the full extent of the picture you painted. We all see colors differently.

15. cheer on other writers you know. you’ll be cheering yourself at the same time.
16. no trope or genre is better or worse than another one. they all just appeal to different audiences.
17. quality and popularity are not the same thing, although they do sometimes overlap
18. numbers and statistics will never tell you whether or not you’re a good writer. they will never tell you how valuable you are as a person.

20. you’re a writer as soon as you start writing things
21. writing and posting are two different things. your story is still worth writing, even if you never plan to share it
22. you don’t need to apologize for what you write or what you post. 
23. don’t worry about taking up too much space. the internet doesn’t have a maximum size. 
24. keep your readers in mind when you’re tagging your content. how could they search for your fic? if you use a tag, will be a reader who loves that tag be satisfied with how much it appears in your story?
25. if you have a relationship in your fic that plays a minor role, tag it in the Additional Tags section instead of the Relationship section so that people who love that ship don’t get their hopes up
26. be cautious when looking at bookmarks on your fic. they aren’t “extra comments.” that’s a space where readers make notes for themselves and each other, not for authors. 
27. you don’t need to know everything about canon before you start writing fic
28. you don’t need to read fic in the same fandoms you write for
29. you don’t need to read fic at all in order to write it
30. love your work because sometimes you’re the only one who will - and that’s okay
31. if your hobby starts feeling like a job, you might need to take a break before you get burnt out
32. if you get stuck on a story, you can always start a new one
33. if you fall out of love with a story, you can always stop writing it. if you’re worried about your readers, you can always give them a bullet point summary of where you were planning to go with thing. for a lot of people, that’s satisfying and provides closure
34. if you get hate, report it
35. use the tools at your disposal to block hate before it can come in (limiting or turning off comments, limiting or turning off asks, blocking users, etc)
36. try replying to comments sometimes. it can be a lovely way to make fandom friends
37. don’t be afraid to reblog your own writing posts.
38. if you get stuck on your summary, just write 1) who the story is about 2) what they are doing and 3) what problem gets in their way
39. notice when your writing makes you smile. that moment is a gift. enjoy it.
40. notice when your writing makes you cry. that moment is a gift, too.
41. even if you’re disappointed in how your story turned out, there’s something in there that’s fantastic. find that thing and focus on it and feel proud.
42. some ideas are ones you want to write. some are ones you want to read. if you ever have too many ideas to deal with at once, give some of the latter ones away to someone else. 
43. sometimes the things you write will be really personal. be careful about putting them where other people can comment. they won’t know how personal it is for you, and you need to remember that comments aren’t about you, they’re about the story.
44. remember that you can write series as well as stories. if the story is done but you still have passion or ideas, start a new one in the same universe.
45. enjoy the satisfaction of finishing a story. savour it. bask in it a little while.
46. don’t feel guilty about abandoning a story. not every story gets finished, and that’s okay
47. you can have separate accounts for different fandoms. you can have one account with a million fandoms in it. do whatever works for you.
48. sometimes writing is more important than sleep - but only sometimes
49. it doesn’t matter if that story has been written before by someone else. it doesn’t matter if it was written by you. write it again.
50. only follow the advice that makes sense to you. the rest isn’t important.

1. You don’t have to tag more than you want. If additional tags, if relationships, or characters don’t spark joy, you don’t have to tag them.
2. don’t make fun of yourself or disaparrage yourself for writing something silly or self-indulgent or out there. It’s the whole point of fic. Let your readers decide how they’ll feel about it.
3. don’t worry about using up a fic idea. you can always reuse parts later or try writing it again later. There’s no tracker on there. you can write 100 regency period aus if you want.
4. sometimes you won’t be able to write or read fic. That’s normal. people need a break and allow their minds to do something else to refresh.
5. try see the beauty in your past writing. it might be a clever turn of phrase or even that you were so excited to just create.
6. attempt a writing routine. it might not work out for you, but maybe it will. It can be as small as always drinking tea before you write. it can help get you in the writing space.
7. try posting before you sleep, if you’re like me and have a problem staring at the numbers. If you’re asleep you can’t check the numbers every hour.
8. toss any writing advice that doesn’t help you out the window. if you love epiphets or if you adore purple prose go ahead and enjoy it.
