A Guide to the Drift

I’m the eponymous Drifter, and this is my fanblog, which will be FFXIV-Centric for the time being. My main blog is biot08, and asks/follows/replies will come from there. For now my ask box is open, anon’s on. Feel free to send asks/comments even if we’re not mutuals. I’m on the Crystal Data Center, Coeurl server. My Free Company (which both of my characters are in) is Gage Acquisitions, a group of mutual friends who have been met and made over the years.

About the blog:

The majority of the activity on this blog is reblogs, usually of art or my friend’s writing. I also write some fanfic myself, and occasionally post screenshots.

By far my most popular post of all time is a shitpost of Rhalgr in a Subway apron. Subway Rhalgr is as of this writing now my second most popular post of all time. My first most popular post of all time is a shitpost about how long Thancred has been missing from the MSQ, which my dear friend (who to be fair is the one I meant to be teasing) has made sure all and sundry have been made aware of, and boy is there some -thirst- in those tags. Make of that what you will.

Characters:

Zoissette Vauban, Warrior of Light: My main character, a female Elezen Ishgardian knight and accomplished Scholar. My writing defaults to this variant of the character.

Zoissette Vauban, Gage Acquisitions Lawyer: Same character, but this is the ‘face’ used to interact with the Free Company at large and for what little light RP I do engage in. My writing will tend to make it obvious if this is the one I’m using for a particular story. Nyx Blackmoon: Compatriot and frequent companion of Zoissette Vauban, they appear to be a female Miqo’te Keeper of the Moon. They belong to no tribe, however, and make few claims to their history.

Organization:

I attempt to be -meticulous- with my tagging and will go through and clean up tags periodically. My tags are all lower-case, and I try to avoid using punctuation in them whenever possible, with the exception of that which might appear in a character’s name (ex: y’shtola rhul). I try to tag all characters seen in artwork, and primary acting characters that show up in writing. For shipping, my tags tend towards name x name, in alphabetical order; the exception is for ships that involve an OC or a person’s warrior of light. Those tags will tend towards firstName x oc wol (example: estinien x oc wol).

My writing will appear under the tag biot writes

Friend’s writing will use the tag friends writing

If a post was made after 10SEP2022, I will be making a best-effort attempt to tag things with the expansion they appear in or the expansion that a character’s earliest appearance is in. The expansion name used in the tag will be the full name, all lower case.

NSFW will tend to be tagged nsfw

I also will use the tag: general content warning if I think something warrants it. This is very subjective. Other content warnings will be in the format cw: specific warning.

About me:

I am north of 40 and queer. If you’re reading my blog, I expect you to curate your own experience, and do what is safe for you. I try to keep my tags very organized, with both NSFW warnings and content warnings as I think of them. If it’s not related to FFXIV, I tend to post it to my main blog instead. The rest of this I’m copying from my friend LynMars: [...] just so we’re clear: transmen are men, transwomen are women, nonbinary are nonbinary.  Biphobes suck. Polyamory is valid. Ace/Aro belong in queer spaces.  Black lives always matter. Racism/colorism are problems we all have to work on. Pro-choice. Pro-sex workers. Healthcare, food, clean water, and shelter are necessary rights. Nazis/fascists suck. Anti-Censor but also Anti-Jerk; tag/warn and hide content responsibly, and don’t go after people who do that–you are responsible for your own media experience while being considerate of others. If any of this is an issue, unfollow my blogs. I’ll probably screw up somewhere but I keep trying.

Okay it's four in the morning and I'm not entirely right in the head and I absolutely have not thought through the ramifications of this in its entirety, but

Garleans can't use aether, but they can affect and be affected by dynamis. we've seen this in canon.

Culturally Garleans seem to have a lot of emotional repression, breaking through only when pushed to extremes, which has no doubt prevented them from actualizing the combat potential of dynamis in the past. There is now an opportunity for this to change.

as they rebuild and reform their culture we should see Garlean bards becoming a thing, and they should invent heavy metal

think about it think about it. You've got Garleans coming into direct and peaceful contact with other cultures en masse for the first time since they were exiled. They're going to be learning and absorbing so much, and with no infrastructure, one of the things people do for entertainment is gather to sing and tell stories. They are going to learn about bards. They have plenty of skilled ranged combatants. With lots of half-scrapped magitek components lying around, they have the ability and motivation to experiment with sounds no one's ever thought to turn into music before.

All it takes is one bored engineer working with something that can make different pitch frequencies, realizing that they can manipulate those frequencies on purpose, playing around with it until they can make this hunk of sparking wires and metal play the melody they heard around the campfire the other day. That's always been how things start getting invented. Iterate, clean it up, make it more purposeful, advance it. And what the hell else do we have to do but fine-tune the few things that are still ours?

imagine someone getting a brief glimpse a hundred years into the future, when a fully equipped Garlean combat unit includes a sound system broadcasting metal screams and electric guitars that boost a whole platoon's combat capabilities. visions of madness in the best possible way.

From the other day. Sometimes when random emotes are going about you can get lucky and catch some really good screens in split-second moments. This was one of those shots, nothing rehearsed or timed or anything, it just happened (As you might notice the UI is still on cause npc names in the back.)

But yeah, thought it was a really great shot of Folken and Ashlin

10 years ago today I met my now husband =u= its crazy how time flies! HAPPY meeting-ANNIVERSARY <3 <3 <3 Our 10th Eternal Bond anniversary is at the end of the year, coinciding with our 5th irl wedding anniversary :) ( i need to find an anniversary gift)

Vierapril, Day 8 - Relinquish

I see echoes of warriors past in The Artist. Every day, I feel honored that they chose me as their pupil.

Thank you for passing your knowledge to me, for giving up secrets of the honorable arts. I hope I haven't wasted your time.

I personally think Y'shtola deserves some more credit for how she advocates for the Warrior of Light during Shadowbringers. Without knowing the whole story I've always felt she had every right to be uneasy with the Exarch, and to be honest I was expecting a pricklier welcome from her in Rak'tika... but as soon as she realizes who it is, her greeting for the WoL is incredibly warm. I love that her first question is "How are you?" She cares about them! And when her aethersight gives her reason to believe the WoL is in danger, she's concerned! She thinks they need to be told! And when Urianger won't agree to tell them, she does it herself, because she thinks it's the right thing to do. She treats the Warrior of Light like a person who deserves to know what they're getting into and make an informed decision, and it's such a far cry from the "You'll do it because you're the Warrior of Light!" attitudes of everyone in ARR.

And I think it's also worth noting that in the end, after she knows the whole truth, she doesn't seem to hold any of it against G'raha. When you're back in the Source, she's talking about whether he should be given the title of Nunh after his long tenure as the Crystal Exarch, and after he joins the Scions, she seems cool with him, so I genuinely have no reason to think she holds a grudge about any of it.

She was, ultimately, concerned and wanted to do the right thing, and she cares about the Warrior of Light and their wellbeing, and I think that's an important thing about her.

y'shtola gets way too little credit for being fiercely protective of the people she cares about, and a ton of shit for the dramatic things she does to save them (that she has to be rescued from).

some of my favorite bits of missable dialogue that i do not have screenshots for, but come from the text strings from npcs in fanow and slitherbow after the events of mt. gulg, which you never see because honestly who wasn't racing into the finale?:

y'shtola not only advocates for the WOL, she is exhausting absolutely every resource she can get her hands on, and she is grieving. the WOL is her friend, and she wants to help them, and it kills her that she can't. dats it.

Vierapril - 7 - pause

Channeling divine fury to protect your home from invading magitek armies doesn't allow for much downtime. Onti and Bylka do what they can.

This is probably the most complete as well as one of the better quality uploads of the 1.x quest "Futures Perfect" that I've seen.

The Path Companion was a partner for the WoL, someone to make and give commentary during the storyline. They were customizable like a retainer; you chose their race/gender (of the available 1.0 options), class, and personality type. They were also Ala Mhigan originally, with a (variable) relative in the Resistance.

The WoL is defended, and spoken to at the end, by their starter city archon (this is during the Circle of Knowing/Path of the Twelve era, as the Scions were formed by combining the organizations after the Calamity).

This is also the introduction of Gaius van Baelsar as an imperial enemy; going forward there were scenes that include him shooting Cid for being angry and insulting, and also talking to WoL about how Gaius disagrees with Nael van Darnus's plans and the Meteor Project. But here, he crushes the Resistance's operation and gets into a fight with the archons--that only ends when he calls in an airstrike, sending WoL into a brief Echo vision before returning home to get medical aid for their companion.

send HELPED for a scene from my muse's past in which someone helped / saved them

For Iyna, please!

Avatar

She was surrounded.

The magitek smoked and sparked beyond the line of advancing soldiers; she'd accomplished that much, at least.

"Make sure to capture her," the Pilus called. "Sas Laccius will be pleased we've snared this hare!"

Iyna froze, pulse hammering in her ears, mouth dry, fingers clenched on her gun's stock. She had to move, had to react, had to do something, but the mention of Tyrsis had unnerved her far more than it should.

He still hunted her? After all this time?!

send LOST for a scene from my muse's past in which they felt lost, literally or figuratively {Zaine}

Avatar

He was supposed to protect her.

Zaine's axe and armor, Evienne's spells and social acumen. They were a matched set of opposites, a team that had traversed the realm for months now. That's how it worked.

On reflection, he really hadn't known her that long; less than a year. Yet everything they had gone through made it feel much longer, or at least more intense. They had shared their histories, their hopes, more than a few secrets.

Never a bed, though; as much as he'd come to love her, it was not in that way. And she was still mourning the loss of her spouse, besides. So fierce friends and comrades they were.

...They had been.

Zaine was going to tear Gaius van Baelsar into pieces.
