Cyberstasis for a Sleepless Mind

It wasn’t until later during my first year in Tokyo that something disturbed the routine that was slowly but surely settling in my life. It was the good kind of routine; I would carry on doing my mindless delivery job, and after that retreat either home, with the freshly bought retro game console, or in an arcade, where I’d smash buttons or the dancefloor of a rhythm game until my bank account would call it a day. Putting up a spending limit for that sort of thing was probably the best idea I could come up with so I won’t see myself starve.

I was on my way back from the last delivery of the day when my attention got caught by a peculiar scene. Down a narrow street, which I usually took on my way home, a group cornered a man that looked mildly confused and concerned with the situation.

Without actively thinking about it, I found myself actually pushing my hovering scooter forward until my headlight attracted the attention of the mob.

“You all right?” I asked on a chatty tone, though probably my body language could tell from a mile that I was scouting the scene with precaution.

“Turn around and mind your way outta here, kid,” one of the mobsters said. He spoke in Japanese, but he didn’t sound as if he was a local, much alike my own self. However, as I got their attention, I caught glimpse of the victim’s gaze; I could tell that he was praying for me not to leave him there.

“Wasn’t talking to you, but to my mate over there,” I recklessly added as my chin pointed towards the cornered one. The mobsters stared between the two of us and one of them made a short hand sign. It was all I saw before one from the group launched himself at me with a sharp blade in his hand.

Thankfully, my years home, in the company of my beloved mother, taught me quite some strong reflexes in order to avoid all the things she used to throw at me. I managed to avoid the attack, but it had been a short call for sure. However, it was all that was needed to trigger the rest, and taunt them all into coming for me. While it cleared out the path for the previously cornered one, I was rapidly finding myself in his position and I can’t say it was pleasant.

There wasn’t enough room to turn my scooter around and make a fabulous escape and the time it would’ve taken me to dismount it and run, didn’t seem to be a good match with the mob that was already headed my way. In the heat of the moment, I pressed forward and made my way straight through the group. It somehow took them by surprise and allowed me enough time to briefly pause and take along the man they previously attacked.

Thanks to my delivery job, I came to know the streets well enough to find a safe spot, which was likely not going to be tracked down easily. I wasn’t sure what the mobsters’ business was with the man, and whether it was smart of me to do what I’ve done, but it was already too late to think my steps back.
