Ok I know many foreign names in manga/anime do sound this dumb out of cluelessness and it's funny to point and laugh, but in the case of Death Note in particular, this was not a "haha japanese man doesn't know american names" thing. The weird names were a deliberate choice.

I don't have my copy with me right now to directly quote the passage, but on the Death Note vol. 13 tankoubon—which consists of extras and behind-the-scenes content—, the author says that all the names in the series (including the japanese ones) were chosen to not be similar to real names, to avoid creating awkwardness/fear/superstition due to someone's real name being in the fictional Death Note.

For the japanese names, this was achieved by using names that sound like normal japanese names, but are written with unusual kanji (such as the surname Ide being spelled 伊出 rather than 井手, or Takahashi spelled 鷹橋 rather than 高橋). Light's whole name, Yagami Light spelled 夜神月, is very unique and unusual, to avoid creating unwanted association between him and any real person.

Since names in english don't have kanji, the author just invented names that sound vaguely american/british but are not real names in those countries.

Maybe this is just me but I am really surprised that 2023 was the first time a lot of people heard about Palestine because 2021 was when settlers tried expelling Palestinians from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah - this then escalated to the IOF attacking Palestinians in Al Aqsa and throughout the country (almost 300 Palestinians in Gaza were killed and thousands were injured) - there were massive protests all over the world in response. 2021 really laid the foundations for everything that is happening now but it surprises me how little people actually mention the uprising then or were even aware it was happening.

When I say that 2021 laid the foundations for everything happening now, you don't have to look very far. Just as an example, the absolutely atrocious things happening on College campuses right now against pro-Palestinian students? Palestine Legal responded to 280 incidents of suppression of US-based Palestine advocacy in 2021 - 58% of which were related to targeted students and scholars at 81 different campuses. State and federal lawmakers introduced over 30 legislative measures in 2021 aimed at silencing, condemning, or punishing advocacy for Palestinian rights. Also in 2021, George Washington University banned trauma care services for Palestinians after the campus charter for Hillel said it was "harmful to Jewish students".

You can't even forget how in 2021 literal lynch mobs were going through the streets looking for Palestinians to attack - instances of Palestinian drivers being pulled out of their cars and beaten by mobs of settlers or Palestinian-owned businesses or homes being broken into or set on fire. they even mistook other Israelis for being Palestinian and beat them bloody in the streets. I still have a very vivid memory of seeing a video of a settler trying to run over Palestinians with his car in Al Quds and hit one man.

There were massive protests all over the world - around 200,000 people turned out for Palestine in London and there were large protests in major US cities - 2021 marked a huge surge in support of Palestine.

I'm not trying to belittle anyone who has learned about Palestine this past year, I'm glad you did, but I have a really hard time believing that so many people saw *nothing* during 2021.

the Columbia University arrests are worse than they seem. They're arresting protesting students for trespassing. It goes without saying students cannot meaningfully "trespass" in the common areas of a university they attend. So Columbia University has suspended all student protestors from their institution, in the process revoking their access to housing, their belonging, and most crucially damaging their academic futures. We are witnessing full scale silencing and removal of anyone of conscience from the next generation of academia.

My ideal aesthetic is what I'm calling "sexy tomboy". That is to say, I am 100% femme through and through, but I want to look like what a straight man's idea of a "masculine woman" is. i hope that the discussion about student protests does not get reduced to "privileged rich kids faffing around at an ivy league school." setting aside that tenuous claim, over the last week, protests have erupted over the entire country. a few days ago, riot police beat, pepper-sprayed, and arrested NYU faculty shielding students; protests started at the university of southern california when the admin cancelled the valedictorian's speech; encampments appeared at the university of southern carolina, UT dallas, the university of maryland, the university of new mexico, IUPUI, virginia tech, the university of virginia, the university of illinois, the university of north carolina — chapel hill, the university of pittsburgh, uc berkeley, the university of michigan — ann arbor, MIT, emerson, tufts, the university of rochester, rice, swarthmore, the new school, vanderbilt university, with students arrested; students protested or walked out at miami university, northwestern, temple, the 5 claremont colleges: pomona, pitzer, scripps, harvey mudd, and claremont mckenna, stanford, washington university in st louis, students were arrested at ohio state, students were confronted by riot police at cal poly humboldt, after which they occupied campus, students were arrested at the university of minnesota — twin cities, after which faculty walked out; and yes, there are protests at the other ivies, most notably yale, with students facing mass arests after encampments, but there is also an encampment at brown, protests appeared at cornell, princeton faculty issued a statement of solidarity while students are preparing an encampment, and harvard banned the undergraduate palestine solidarity committee. there are thousands of students who are protesting for palestine across the entire country, facing harassment, arrest, and suspension in return
