Hello! This is where I share my Silmarillion writing, post occasional musings, and reblog the wonderful thoughts, art, and writing of other creators. I'm insane about Daeron and Maglor, all those in their orbits, and the themes on which they converge (music, storytelling, fate and free will, and water-adjacent wanderings). I post and reblog mature content.

My Writing (AO3 | SWG)

There are three main reasons I love writing fic: to engage with the text’s themes and lore; to laugh and be ridiculous (sometimes also engaging with themes and lore); and to make characters bang each other (sometimes also engaging with themes and lore).

So, the best way I've figured out to sort my writing is by Thoughtful, Funny/Warm, and Smutty.

Would you ever write a fic with one of Tolkien's villains as the protagonist/POV character? (And if you have, forgive me, and please link it)

Avatar

I think the closest I’ve come to a villain’s pov/as protagonist is a small ficlet about Khamul’s mother I wrote for B2MeM one year. I haven’t written anything like that about one of the major villains—but I’ll never say never, if an idea presents itself!

If I were to write about a villain, I think it would most likely be Saruman. He interests me far more than like, Morgoth or Sauron, because they went bad so early but Saruman was genuinely good and wise and noble, up until he wasn’t. And it wasn’t like he had someone whispering in his ear, or tempting him personally, either. There’s something both fascinating and particularly tragic in his fall.

Weekend Wip

@polutrope tagged me and this prompted me to start part 4 of Star-daughter. Here’s a little snippet!

She tells Eluréd of her old life in Sirion, an Age ago, and her wedding to Eärendil. She tells of the two sons she left behind, and her heart breaks when her brother, only a child, understands the horrors of the Kinslaying, understands why she jumped.

I tag @thescrapwitch @swanhild @cilil, no pressure at all to take part. I’m off to sleep now 😴

Weekend WiP

Tagged in the last week by @welcomingdisaster @curufiin @emyn-arnens @camille-lachenille @imakemywings @leucisticpuffin @swanmaids to share a snippet of a WiP.

Still plugging away at And Love Grew, which I've decided to finish writing before I start posting again and that's put a fire under me to finish :D. But alas, it is not a story that can be rushed.

Embor watched Elros’ pout deepen, watched him fight the tears rising to his eyes. He swallowed them back, at which Embor was both relieved and saddened. A child as young as he should have no need to hold his tears. Grief should not be locked away — in his heart Embor knew that. And yet, if all who lived in these times let sorrow flow freely, all the lands would flood with despair. “I am sorry,” Embor said. “It is not easy to lose a mother, but you will find others who care for you.” He could not bring himself to restate the promise that their father lived yet, having no reason to believe it was true. “How did your mother die?” Elrond asked suddenly. They knew he had no family. It was not unusual in Sirion — their own mother’s parents had been slain, their father’s missing, Gwereth’s dead by the sword and by disease. But Embor had only ever spoken to them of his father’s heroic death in the Battle of Tears, guarding the retreat of a remnant of their people. How by this deed he had allowed Embor’s grandfather to escape, to come to him, then an infant, hiding behind Himring’s walls with his mother, and flee with them before that mighty fortress fell into the hands of Morgoth’s lieutenants. He had elided the tale of how they came to Dor-lómin, mingled with the traitors (“For,” his grandfather had said, when Embor was older, “if the choice is between my belief in what is right, an insubstantial thing, and the survival of my family, I will always choose my family.”).

Hmm I will re-tag all the people who tagged me since it's been almost a week for some of them.. and invite @melestasflight @swanhild @thelordofgifs to join in the sharing!

Throwback Thisday

Thanks for the tag @zealouswerewolfcollector! Today, I bring you an excerpt from A Proposition (E!!), a Russinglor fic the silmkinkmeme made me write (made me, I tell you), and which absolutely scandalised me at the time, such that I vowed never to come off Anon. Well, that didn't happen, and I have written much more scandalous things since, but this one is a rollicking good time in my humble opinion.

Maitimo chuckles and seizes Findekáno’s hand, twisting it behind his back to keep it from continuing to tickle. “He was writing on the veranda when we passed by. You really didn’t see him? I assumed that you were trying to show off your superior lung capacity,” he drawls, teasingly. “I would never dream of challenging your virtuosic little brother on that count,” Findekáno replies. He conjures up a memory of Macalaurë’s full, irresistibly sensuous voice and pinches his brows, thinking, ‘What would that voice sound like in the throes of passion?’ It would be quite something, he imagines. “Maitimo?” he asks. Maitimo hums his acknowledgement as he releases his arm and brings his chin to rest against Findekáno’s head.
“Have you ever heard Macalaurë make love?” There’s a long silence. “No,” Maitimo says at last, “come to think of it, I haven’t.” He inhales deeply and Findekáno can feel him tense slightly. “Finno,” he says seriously, “I might be a terrible brother but I am not even sure if Macalaurë has made love.”

@ettelene @cuarthol @curufiin @meadowlarkx @sallysavestheday would you like to share something?

Throwback Thisday

Thank you so much for tagging me @sallysavestheday! Continuing the TRSB trend (still two days left to sign up as an author), my throwback fic for today is the one I wrote as a treat for navyinks' incredible work for TRSB 2021.

5026 words, G, Maedhros and Fingolfin, Maedhros and Fingon

Maedhros wants to make sure nothing goes wrong on the day of his uncle's coronation.

I still like this fic, so that's a good sign :D

Listen I know Tolkien gives us 'strong-voiced' as the sense for Can- in Canafinwe but it's very important to me that cáno means commander.

I also know Tolkien softened (imo) Macalaure to 'Forging Gold' but I really think 'Gold Cleaver' is superior.

Feanor's second son shows up in the Noontide and it's like, "Here's Commander Gold Cleaver!" And everyone's like, "Whoa there, that's a bit of an intense / warlike name, don't you think?" And Finwe does some damage control like, "Oh, no, you see what my son and daughter-in-law meant was that he is a very powerful singer and talented harper!" And the people of Tirion are like, "Oh, right. Yes, very nice. Very poetic." And Maglor, who as it turns out does have a mighty voice and deft fingers, embraces that version of his identity because yes, it is very poetic, and he likes the musical connotations much more, thank you.

... but that's not what Feanor and Nerdanel meant, and they were right, and Maglor gets thrust into the role of a warlord whether he likes it or not. But they were also not right, because Maglor never stops being the mighty singer, never stops playing golden melodies, either.

Maglor and dualities. Yes.

Maedhros at the sack of Doriath & Fingon at Thangorodrim

Just wondering what Fingon would do if he survived the Battle of Unnumbered Tears or was reborn and had the ability to change the history of the last two kinslayings. I don't think he would directly fight Maedhros martially. For one thing, he may not have realized the effect of the oath on Maedhros before Doriath (Maedhros had been acting more sensibly until then). Also, standing against Maedhros would mean he would have to deal with other Feanorians, who would become more chaotic and dangerous without the restraint of their eldest brother. The conservative approach would be to negotiate with Dior, but we all know what usually happens to negotiations in this story... Fingon the valiant might come up with more unusual plans, such as sneaking into Menegroth to steal the silmaril, like a burglar, since he had rescued his cousin from under the nose of Morgoth...

But after all attempts fail, the confrontation presented in this picture is still possible. I chose to draw Fingon at Thangorodrim because I was listening to the song "恋人を射ち堕とした日" and because I wanted to see something like "killing the person I was trying to rescue" (well, considering Maedhros' experience, it might as well have been a rescue from the torture of the oath and heavier sins)
