Let It Go

Elsa || 21 || College Junior It’s funny how some distance makes everything seem small, and the fears that once controlled me can’t get to me at all.

“…What’s that supposed to mean? Look, if you can help then just spit it out. Usually the acting coy thing is endearing but I’m not in the mood right now.”

“Just don’t freak out, okay?”  With a shaking hand, Elsa grabbed whatever was closest to her, a pen, and gripped it tight.  She figured it would be best to demonstrate her powers on something other than the girl, out of fear she would turn her to a block of ice.  Her powers tended to go a bit haywire when she was nervous anyways, so staying away from the girl’s head was probably for the best.  And faster than Elsa anticipated, the pen froze to solid ice.  “... That’s what that meant,” she said, holding out the frozen pen.

“It’s hard,” Shaggy nodded. He wondered if he’d ever truly let anything go. Doubtful. He was a forgiving person, but all of the times he’d been hurt still rested inside of him somewhere; bottled up, pushed down, ignored. He hadn’t moved on, just pretended he wasn’t bothered. Lost in his thoughts, the boy didn’t realize what had happened at first. His eyes were locked on the joint as it froze in-between his fingers, confusion (ever so slowly) clouding his expression. “Way, did you see that?”

“It really is, and I don’t think it gets easier.”  In a way, Elsa found the boy’s attitude towards life refreshing.  It was more along the lines of her own than she had ever known previously.  But she knew better than try explain her situation to him, and given his current state, she could probably play it off.  “See what?” she asked as calmly and unassumingly as possible.

“Like, I-I think it’s a good enough resolution to just… just try to get through the next year, y’know?” Taking a long drag, he offered the joint to his company. “That shit’s hard.”

“I know the feeling, I’m still learning to let things go,” Elsa said, waving off the boy and the joint, and unintentionally freezing it in the process.  Letting out a soft gasp, the girl folded her hands in her lap and pretended like nothing happened.  She really had to get a handle on this before it got her into more trouble.  Elsa could only hope the boy was too stoned to even think too much of it.

“People were looking at me like I was the first person they’d ever seen with a box of doughnuts on the beach,” Dion continued, paying little attention to if the person that had fell victim to his rambling was actually listening to him. “Speaking of, I need to ask you a question. Are half-doughnuts a ridiculous idea? Say I made one side red velvet, the other side… I don’t know, strawberry. Straight down the middle, the flavor changes. That wouldn’t be too ‘out there’, right?”

“Well, doughnuts aren’t exactly people’s typical beach food go to, D,” Dani said, smiling up at her friend, giving him her undivided attention.  “Um, that’s genius.  Granted most of your ideas are, but wow, I think you’ve outdone yourself.  But the real question is, would this be a regular sized doughnut or a giant one?”

Your girl held her own in her home country at Worlds, and gave the US a run for their money.  Dani even won two of her events (strut and duet), and despite making history as the first woman to catch a quad in a world competition (it’s the equivalent of doing four cartwheels under one super high toss), she got second in her solo event to the second most well known twirler in the world, and second or third in others, and despite people thinking something shady happened, Dani couldn’t be happier for herself or the other people, because hey, it’s a big deal to make it, let alone do well.  So Dani’s on cloud nine right now and happier than usual, I apologize.

Being born with the power to absorb the heat from living creatures and manipulate and project ice from that energy, lends a person to live an isolated life.  And the moment Elsa was born her fate was sealed for her when a nurse ended up needing to be treated for hypothermia after holding her too long.  So the newborn was isolated and handled with the most care the few people allowed in her life ever dared to give her.

Many years passed where Elsa was in the dark about why she lived the life she did.  Her parents always told her she was alone because she was sick and that it wasn’t safe for her to be around other people or for other people to be around her.  And she accepted that.  At least until her little sister was born and grew up to be showered with affection by their parents and their kingdom.

Through the thin walls, windows, and cracks under the door to her bedroom, Elsa could hear and see her little sister grow up and live her life outside of her room, and the girl was jealous.  All she wanted was a life worth living, and she didn’t want her “illness” to get in her way anymore.  So one day when Anna knocked on her door, she answered.

The sun was just coming up, and everyone in the castle was still asleep, aside from the two young princesses.  And Elsa had never had so much fun in her life.  It was that morning that the young girl realized the “magic” she was capable of.  She was able to make it snow inside their home.  Elsa had never had this happen to her and her sister was in awe, so she tested out her newfound powers.

While Elsa had never felt anything like this, Anna seemed to quickly get tired and cold.  And it didn’t take long before the young girl fell asleep and wouldn’t wake up, so Elsa ran to get her parents who immediately locked her back in her room and took Anna to a hospital where she was treated for hypothermia.

It was after that night that Elsa understood what her powers were and why her parents locked her in her room all the time.  It was to keep other people safe, not her.  And quickly news spread through the kingdom about what had happened with their two princesses, and Elsa was labeled dangerous.  But the king and queen didn’t know what to do with their eldest daughter, the future queen.

They couldn’t send her away, so they kept her locked in her room where her father would try to help her learn how to control her powers.  And it worked for a few years.  Elsa had some confidence in her ability to not kill people, but quickly, it was all gone.

Her parents had to travel overseas and the night before they were supposed to leave, there was a fight.  As the future queen, Elsa wanted to be able to go with her parents, but they didn’t think it was safe, and Elsa fought back.  And as things got more and more heated, the girl started to lose control and ice shot from her hands, striking her parents in the heart and killing them.

Again, Elsa found herself the victim of news traveling fast in a small kingdom, and not only was she being called dangerous, she was being called a monster and being accused of witchcraft.  The kingdom quickly stormed the castle, but Elsa was strong, and with so many people around, she was getting more and more powerful.  And before long, Arendelle was trapped in an eternal winter, and Elsa had never felt better or more alive.

Her parents had mentioned Walt a few times in the past, but Elsa refused to go somewhere where they’d isolate her and teach her how to pretend to be normal.  Oh no, she was done with that.  But New York City was one of the largest cities in the world.  She would’ve been an idiot not to relocate.

“Well, I would say yes, but then you had to say the whole chocolate thing. Anyone in their right mind would know that vanilla is clearly the better flavor. But… sure. I mean, yes, I’ll definitely get ice cream while criticizing tourists and try-hards with you.”

“You are aware that vanilla has become synonymous with bland and boring, correct?  There is a reason for that.  But, I guess I can overlook this character flaw.”
